- World-renowned canine expert Tom Davis visits a shelter to help with the most challenging dogs. Adela has been at the shelter for over 600 days because she's a scared and fearful dog. We hope this video sheds light on the shelter dogs and their hard-working volunteers.

One of my current dogs is a male Pyrenees. He’s 125 lbs, so he can’t be trifled with. We adopted him at age 2, and he had already had THREE previous owners. The shelter was blunt: no matter how much experience you’ve had, he’s going to be a challenge. We’ve now had him for over six years, and yes, he is still a challenge. Some dogs are so traumatized by their experiences that they never quite lose their fears. He’s great with the family, including very young kids, but any loud noise or quick movement can still terrify him. We just roll with it, he’s (mostly) non-destructive, and we love him despite his quirks. He’s 8 or 9 now and, since the breed only lives till 10-12, I always tell him, “you don’t have that many years left, so you might as well enjoy life!”
I'm one of Adela's volunteers, and she's an absolute ANGEL when she gets to know you!
God bless ya! Hope we get someone interested!
She seems so very sweet!!!!
When it comes time, Adela is exactly the kind of dog I want to adopt.
I get tears, I wish I could adopt them all.
Blessings to you all for doing this and helping. ❤
So precious. They are just scared. That anxiety and fear they face everyday is heartbreaking. They don’t understand why they are locked up, why they are left, many are abused. I hope someone super patient and sweet takes her to a forever happy “home”.
@@xperiencesaecm😊
It's painful to watch. Cant imagine being in a small space with people screaming their heads off, I would feel just like her. I hope she finds a loving caring human🙏
I adopted a bonded pair last year that were in a shelter as kennel mates for 3 years. They are incredibly good dogs now. I can't get over how resilient they are and how quickly they adjusted to a home environment. One is a black lab and the other a mut mix. The lab is pretty big and was under socialized which made him less adoptable but with a little training, a loving/consistent, firm, and stable environment he learned very quickly. No regrets, they're awesome now.
I can't help but picture Lee from Asher House scooping her up to give her all the love in the world. He's amazing with fearful dogs and has a big pack of rescues.
What a beautiful GSD. Wishing her a perfect family soon.
OMG! I love her & I am ready for another dog now. My last girl died 3 years ago & I miss her so much, but this dog reminds me of her. When I rescued Annie, she too was petrified. I could so help this dog but I live in Canada. I wish I had the money to come get her because I would. She is so sweet, I can tell! She needs a home where she will have strong leadership to guide her & give her confidence. Please keep us posted on her Tom!!
Where in Canada? Maybe we can arrange?
It's not a problem adopting dogs in the US and bringing them to Canada. I did it myself 10 months ago and I'm so happy I did. Then I used Tom's videos to help train him out of his reactivity.
I hope and pray you can get her.
Can they ship her to you? Or I'm in Montana real close to Canada. Maybe we can help get her to you.
Feel free to reach out if you are interested! I'm Adela's advocate and POC at the shelter.
We have a beautiful GSD in our shelter who has been there for nearly a year. He’s 4 years old and beautiful. Was adopted but returned because he doesn’t do well with small dogs in the family. The time in the shelter is taking its toll and I found your videos while looking for ways that I can better help him while he’s in the shelter’s care. Thank you for working with shelter dogs and providing inspiration to those of us who volunteer.
What do you guys think of the shelter videos?
I love that you are giving exposure to adoptable dogs that have been in the shelters for excessively long times. And explaining what you are doing to people AND showing what realistically happens when you leave a dog at a shelter.
Maybe pin this comment...
Great exposure for the dogs, and it shows your love of what you do over the business you created around it ❤ .
I think videos like this are great.
I follow Robert Cabral, and he does videos featuring adoptable dogs in LA.
I just adopted a 5 year old female GSD 3 months ago, from the Yuma humane society.
The one thing I wish that shelters were better at is helping you prepare for how to deal with fearful/shut down dogs.
Or at least point you towards resources to help you.
I believe they should screen folks better as well. I know they want to get them adopted out, but adopter's really need to know what they're getting into, so that the dog doesn't get returned.
Have heard stories of people returning a dog after a couple of days, because "it has too much energy"... guess what, it was a puppy!
I was not at all prepared for what this would be like, as I adopted my first dog at 3 months old.
Sorry... again, yes I like these videos.
Advice for potential adopters would make it even better.
As a volunteer, I thank you ❤
Adela has been through a roller coster over the last 500+ days. I love going to see and work with her every day. She loves her people. It just takes her a little bit to warm up! Thank you, Tom! Hopeful this gets Adela's name out there! Let's get this little lady into a home!
I pray she finds a loving home really soon, to spend the rest of her life.
Such a beautiful girl ❤
Great video to show what time and patience can do. Dogs can exist in shelters but are not living a happy life - its like being in prison for them. Well done for trying to help them
Thank you for highlighting this beautiful dog.
What a lovely blessing to see that precious dog come out of her shell. Somewhere, there is a human who needs her even more than Adela needs her human. I pray this connection happens asap!!!!!! Thank you, No Bad Dogs!!!
Hard to watch. Breaks my heart because you can see so much potential in her with time and building her confidence and trust. I have a fearful pup to strangers and I knew it the day I met her. I also knew I was her person... lots of patience, time, love, structure, and confidence building. She's a beautiful soul. Thanks for sharing ❤️
SAME!
She is so beautiful! Thank you for working with her. Please, let’s get her out of the shelter! Don’t buy, please adopt. I have two adopted dogs and I will never buy a dog unless the shelters are empty.
I pray for her and all dogs for a better life!!!.... thank you for taking care of them... GOD BLESS!!!!
You And your team are a blessing, Tom! 🙏 I pray that Adela will find a beautiful home. We adopted a dog from a shelter last year and it’s the most wonderful thing in the world seeing her making progress, starting to trust and being so joyful! Don’t shop, adopt! I’ll enrich not only the dogs but also your life 🙏❤️
When are we going to have the conversation of the rescue groups that won't adopt to good home because there's no fenced in yard that costs $8k? Or you can only work remotely to adopt from us.
Yes I agree!
Rescue dogs are a flight risk at first, and also nervous dogs require a safe secure area outside as they often can’t be lead walked outside at least for a time. And it’s more work for the owner.
Working full time, even part time in some cases, is often not possible as these dogs for obvious reasons are very prone to separation anxiety. And they are by definition social animals. It is extremely unkind to own a single dog and work full time.
That said…I would not do a blanket ban. I’d look at the individual dogs and assess the potential homes. An older placid dog might not mind being left at home to sleep for four hours or so. Some people can take dogs to work. Or they might have multiple dogs.
A confident outgoing smaller dog that likes going out on a lead might be fine with a responsible owner with no outside space.
But the primary concern always has to be the dogs welfare, and reducing the risk of return as much as possible. People don’t always understand what constitutes a good home for a dog, particularly a second hand one that almost always will come with issues. And no rescue wants to hear a dog they homed has been run over, or dumped because it wrecked the house, or barked non stop when left.
Owning a dog is not a necessity, or a right. I worked in this field for over 40 years. And I was very careful with rehoming, but I did take the time to assess dogs and humans, not being part of a large organisation…we had around 40 - 50 at any given point…I could do this, and was not answerable to anyone else. Many of these groups are not run like this, so they have a list of rules. It is what it is.
@@Solitude11-11 excellent ❤
Not hating at all, just a comment on something that I see A LOT. If you can't afford a fenced area, can you afford the emergency surgery that may cost 3-5k? So many people, with the best of intentions, end up euthanizing because they can't afford a major expense that caring for a pet may require.
Rescue groups are individually run They are not state or city municipalities. They are the legal owners of these dogs until ownership is transferred through adoption. As such they know what's best for the dogs in their possession. And therefore they set the rules for requirements of their own dogs. If a particular rescue doesn't fit your needs find another.
She is beautiful! Thank you for being the voice for the misunderstood underdogs, I hope she finds an amazing family and her happily ever after! Everyone should standup and support their local rescues/shelters...Adopt, Donate, Foster and Love!
I have 2 rescues at the moment. My female has been with me now for 8 and a half years (she was 3 when I adopted her). It took a long long time, about 2 years, for her to stop being highly reactive, I've had more bites from her than all the other dogs that I've had and been around put together. She is now the sweetest girl, always ready for a cuddle and happy to meet new people. I didn't even tell the rescue centre about all the bites as I was terrified they would take her away from me. It took time and patience but has been worth it, life would not be the same without her
What a lovely display of love for our awesome four legged friends. My dog Wolfie is a street rescue and he's VERY defensive with most other dogs. He was probably victimized during his street time and thus displays this behaviour at times, including pulling the leash and completely ignoring me when he's too distracted. Yet he's an angel with us in the house. But, I have faith and love for my buddy and will persevere and train him using your techniques until he's the well rounded and calm dog that he can be!
Thank you for your social service. Dogs like her need your help. God bless you
Thank you so much time for taking the time to demonstrate what shelter dogs are or being able to adopt any dog. I'm an ex Foster owner of four dogs and we still volunteer and are in need of people like you to show people that it is doable! XO
Shared on Twitter. Good luck Adela!!!❤
Thank you for doing this and sharing. When I adopted my dog, I witnessed someone returning a dog they adopted only 24 hours earlier. It's important to be realistic. It took 2 years for my dog. He is reactive to. Other dogs. That's OK with me. He's obedient in every other way. I'm so proud of him. He's the best companion. Although he's got equal amounts of herding and hunting instincts so it was confusing at first. But we got this.
Great video Tom, a wonderful lesson in having patience with a scared, worried dog.
Oh my God! I so need a high drive dog that can stand up like a meerkat! Imagine what my clients would think! I'm not in a position to do it right now but I'm so dead! Love this girl so much, thank you Tom and peeps for doing theses videos they rock!! I know y'all have your reasons for doing it this way but if you could find a way to incorporate responsible breeding practices into this series? I feel like an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to these mythical and misunderstood creatures that save our own lives day in and day out. Thank you for doing what you do, Tom and Abbie and ALL your crew. 🐶❤️❤️❤️❤️
500 days in that cell and she responded so well to you in what, a couple of hours maybe?
She would love a rural or semi rural environment. Great work Tom. I would love to do what you do but I would struggle to put her back in that cage.
Over 16 months in jail even a person solitaire confined will make you not civilized. This hurts me so much cuz ive been in jail my while juvenile life and just recently stoped goin to prison my Dog saved and helps me so much. This video broke me made me cry thank you for helping her god bless you. Look how happy she is to see, feel, the sun smell the smells.❤❤
These videos break my heart every time, but I can't stop myself from watching them. 😢 🙏🙏🙏
Hope she gets adopted!
This is why fostering is SO important. The shelter environment is loud like a prison 24/7. There are diseases like parvo and kennel cough that every single dog is susceptible to the longer they stay there. It’s like staying in a hospital for far too long. Even a weekend in a foster home would help them.
She'll get around really quick if she makes it to a real home, still a puppy and very adaptable. She seems to have a great mentality under that layer of fear, it's heartbreaking to hear she have spent so long time in that cold environment. I'm sure the staff do what they can, but that's no place for a dog and especially not a young and insecure one. It would surprise me greatly if she don't get adopted after this video (at least I certainly hope so).
Thank you for making this video. It's so raw and real. I love it because it has no "attention-grabbing" BS in this video. Thank you, Tom for what you do.
Amazing video and really important to show the potential. You are doing an awsome job shining awareness on shelter dogs. This was heartbreaking to watch, but so so important. Beautiful Adela❤️ Hope she gets her loving forever home.
Sensitive dogs love hard once they trust you.
Love love love that you're working with shelter dogs. Please continue !!
Love your mission and the series this year. You are doing so much good. Bless ya. :)
I have a shelter dog named Adela as well, scared and reactive. She was at shelter for 7 months. Somebody brought whole litter of 3 m.o. puppies there. She was the most scared and timid, only girl. First foster parrents didnt do good, taking her as an unsocilized village shelter dog into city centre first day and having two young kids at their household added to her anxiety, they...surprisingly, returned her, luckily because, she has forever home now. Its a tough job, but most rewarding. She is love. We, big Adela and fluffy Adela, wish this girl to find loving forever home as well, may the name bring her some luck. ❤
My girl is somewhat reactive coming out of kennel. And she's the sweetest angel I have ever met ❤❤❤
My heart broke seeing Adela in shelter for so long. She is already housebroken! I am sending good wishes to her and her new family.
Same!
I think this is a fabulous direction to help others see how awful of an issue this is. Most want a puppy and I understand its easier for most. But there are so many like adele that just need some love. We are not all perfect and neither are dogs they just need a chance to show how awesome they are.
Thank You Tom 😊
LOVE these shelter videos! One of your older ones inspired me to get my dog. So grateful for you, Tom and team!
Such a sweet girl. Thanks for showing her potential.
Thanks for watching!
I like your kennel visits. All our dogs over the last 50 years have been Adelas.
Thank you Tom ❤
So sad to see dogs in the cage of shelter!😢
What a sweetheart its so sad that shes been in a cage for so long
What a gorgeous wonderful doggie. I wish I could have a big house to keep her along with mine. The two of them would've have so much fun. She does the two legged thing my dog does. 😂❤
I hope she gets adopted in a bit!
This reminds me of my 8 years in a municipal shelter... except Adela's kennel is a ton cleaner than where I was... I wouldn't sit on those floors, but other than that... the technique is what I did too. Good stuff!
she’s gorgeous❤ I hope she finds her forever home 😊
Tom from the bottom of my heart, Thank you for what you’re doing ❤
HI Tom, Please let us all know what happens to Adela in a follow up video. It would be great if she finds a forever home. ❤
This is fantastic of you and your team.
Inspiring. Thank you
Tom, you're a good one.
omg thank you sooooo much for doing this, this is what is needed the most and sadly only a few are willing to invest there time thus money into it.
please i want to donate to project that trains shelter dogs and makes sure they are addoped into a loving family
Aww....so sad. If she's only about 2.4 years old, about half her life, she's been in the shelter. 💔 Poor girl. I hope she finds her forever home soon. Love her!!!
Same!
Poor baby 500 days!? 😢
Seeing her like this breaks my heart.
I am on my second adopted fear reactive dog that presented like this at the shelter (actually much much worse). They take a bit more time than most dogs to adjust and come around but they always turn into the move wonderful companions once you win them over!
Great work / hoping Adele gets adopted 🤞🏽
Thanks you for all you do for the dogs of the world. Your love of them shows in so many ways. ❤
Great job Tom! You are a good person!! I´m trying to do the same in Portugal, but I need more training in dog behavior, especially in these types of situations.
Thank you for doing this. She is beautiful! If we didn’t already have a GSD and a small dog and a cat with 3 kiddos, I would want her. I can tell she is such a great dog. Good luck to her!
GOOD LUCK TO ADELA!
500 days in solitary confinement, no wonder she is a wreck.
She would do better in a foster home with a regular family to rebuild her feel of purpose, companionship and pack unity/belonging.
I've taken on many dogs as a foster carer, usually with two weeks away from the noisy shelter they defrag and start to interact with your routine and then the break through happens and the fun and affection begins.
It take time for even the best dogs to adjust and assimilate into your world. Be patient.
Thank you for caring and making time for shelter dogs ❤ you’re an inspiration and make such a difference educating people!
She needs to get out of the shelter. I know she will do fine and I have seen this behavior at the shelter I volunteer at. the longer they are there, it's sometimes more difficult to get them adopted.
She is beautiful. Someone will be lucky to have her as their most loyal friend. Adopted dogs always seem to be grateful forever. I have mine.
Best of luck Adela!
Keep us updated - hope to hear she’s been adopted soon !
Thank you for helping the dogs! 🐕
Thanks for watching!
Yay! People love these types of interactions. (Just ask any of Rocky Kanaka's 4+ million subscribers). I think shelter videos will get you there. 🙂 People WILL be clamoring for follow-ups, though...
Oh my goodness….I adopted a rescue over the internet four years ago. Just like Adela!
I didn’t know he was as bad as he is! Yep I said 4 years ago! A Train Wreck who I have adjusted my entire life to. If I give up, he will die.
Fortunately I’m retired so the dishes can wait. One vet told me she has never seen PTSD this bad.
Part of me thinks Adela would be great with Franklin. I need to get out of this apt and have some good luck and fortune come to me.
My heart aches for these abused animals.
I'll go out on a limb here and express my thoughts that I do not think it is always in a dog's best interest to be kept alive for years in such a terrified state. What an absolutely tormented existence...
I am actually kinda with you on that. So sad and not fair.
@eddiesaviarycom-fu9me totally agree, if that was realistic. It is a very bad case, that can be helped, no doubt about it, but only through a truly specialized person. Unfortunately the Tom Davises out there are too few and far between.
Let's hope no one feels the same about you if you were to ever get locked up.
Yeah but the people at fault here are humans and we have laws for basically every single thing and breathing which is ridiculous but what we should really have regulations on is overbreeding animals constantly. Because no animal deserves to be in a shelter.
@@jenniferpepler5843hi, I saw your other comment about wanting this dog, did you see Tom’s comment, they are others that want to help get her to you in Canada??! Trying to help 😊
I felt sick watching this poor baby.
La paura di Adela, mi ha fatto tanta tenerezza, uscita dal canile mi sembrava meno spaventata. Speo trovi una famiglia che la accolga.
What a beautiful girl, she is begging for a good owner. 💖 Hope she can get her furever home before 501 days!
Wonderful way to get the awareness for these wonderful dogs!
Such a beautiful video. That dog was already blossoming with the right handling.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@tomdavisofficial thanks for what you do!
I don’t blame her sometimes I’m scared to people too
What a sweet girl! Thank you for this. 👏🏻👍🏼
This is breaking my heart, what the heck, balling my eyes out here. I usually reserve this for thinking about children in abusive sitiations. I am at the beginning of video, and while I am sad for her, I am hopeful. I have been following you since getting my Sheperd 1 1/2 ago and have seen what a caring heart can do. It has made you so knowledgeable out of necessity of wanting to make a difference. Fortunate girl Adele!!
So yes, love the video, more would be awesome!Thank you! 💓
Please don't put her back in that jail cell.
Thanks for helping shelter dogs! I will never forget how you helped “Chloe’ from SCAS!
Thanks Tom! Youre a damn good man for what you do.
Awe she was so good on the leash and obedient. Wasn’t reactive to the barking dogs ❤ I know she will find a home
I am in South Carolina… has she been adopted yet? I have 3 minature schnauzers and 1 cat… would she be a good fit with other dogs and cat? I have a fenced in back yard with plenty of room to run. She would be in our home and not 24-7 outside. Where are you located?
At the very beginning of the video, Adela appeared to be afraid of the camera.
I thought that if the camera had been fixed up high or on the floor beforehand, she might have tried to get closer to Tom much earlier🙄
But there was no need to worry about that. Tom knew exactly what he was doing.
Great job as usual.
Has she been adopted?
Yes! Was posted on his IG this morning. She has a home ❤
What would you recommend for a rescue that doesn’t like leashes or harnesses or collars?
Go somewhere else
I always have animals from SHELTERS or RESCUE and love them UNCONDITIONALLY ❤❤❤Adela is same loving beautiful SWEETHEART...just need to get out like all ANIMALS in the SHELTERS 😢😢😢😢If you understanding, patient caring LOVING HUMAN PLEASE foster adopt and SAVE HELPLESS LOVING ANIMALS like Adela ❤😢❤😘🐕❤ALL ANIMALS are terrified in SHELTERS and no SURPRISE 😢😢😢They feel afraid and sense more than we think...it is HEARTBREAKING for HELPLESS ANIMALS to be fail by humans and being in noisy strange scary place 😢😢😢 and they don't DESERVE being Dumped by humans! PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPT and SAVE HELPLESS ANIMALS LIVES 😢😢😢😘🐕❤❤❤PLEASE come to the SHELTER and see Adela and give her chance to blossom with LOVING FAMILY FOREVER and to ALL AMAZING ANIMALS IN THE SHELTERS 😢😢😢😢
Would be cool to overlay a timer to show how time progresses
This is why more shelters need Fear Free. Stress free environment for dog using calming techniques.
I love these vids. I wish I could adopt her. Please do more of these. Maybe more with her??
Do you have a course on how to become a dog trainer? Because I wanna do what you do
..who walks into a recluse dog enclosure with a noosed rope in ur hand..and why has that dog been neglected to be socialised for 500 days?..
Because shelters are overwhelmed with not enough volunteers or adopters. It’s a leash. The dog is afraid of everything. The leash is the least of her worries.
I have watched these You tubes for over a year and my first thought is making it illegal to just dump a dog and cost nega money to do so. It sppears out west this is common
My local animal shelters are finally no kill operations. I’ll admit that I don’t adopt dogs but I’m sure glad people do. 👍🏻🇺🇸
Don’t know her background but it makes me sick the things ppl do to dogs see them as nothing abuse them and just leave them to day it’s so sad to see just like many others I wish I had endless land where I can take all these aka throw away dogs as some see them and have an endless place they can run and play and live their best life
