    I suspect that the bolt failure is due to fatigue. Basically it starts with a tiny crack or weak spot on the surface. Then as the bolt gets vibrated from the forces on the rudder, over time the crack grows. - If it is fatigue, then expect the bolts on the Starboard rudder to fail soon. I hope I'm wrong. Great video - nice to see Brian on a different boat. - He's such a mensch.

      Thank you 🙏 you are correct! we are replacing the entire steering system as we speak. It was a planned refit that we had postponed (understanding the risks) until we could find a suitable yard for a haul out.

    You had so many issues with those rudders! The company should be held accountable and provide a true fix!

    Kristin, what you were describing during the video about the friendship and cooperation between these guys as being unique to the sailing community, may be true. However, what you were describing and what you witnessed was the normal behaviour of normal men who when they get together to help out someone else in need, are able to leave all crap at the door and will meet with great enthusiasm with no egos, putting all their skills and ideas into the pool and then drawing from that pool so they get the job done with no one getting their nose out of joint because their idea was not used.
    Men are normally great at creating a cooperative to fix things and get the job done with little fuss and no negative crap. There may be some noise during the job, because men like to take the micky out of each other and tell jokes, because it gets rid of frustrations and everyone enjoys these short moments together. Then all is celebrated with a drink and a cheer.
    Well done guys for a job well done, and well done Kristin for a great video record of such a community event.

    Me: "oh that good it needed cleaning anyway hun..."
    I know you can't carry everything on your boat, but a length (3FT) of 2" pipe will always fit over most tools to give extra leverage, say on a shifter, monkey wrench or other tool..

    Great show guys.
    You've had so much trouble with this boat. Rule of thumb is replace S/S at 7 years. However, Great Circle lost their rudder to metal fatigue so so much for that rule. Outremer did recall all 55 rudders which suggests bad batch of S/S. Anyway, like I said last video, luckily it was relatively calm, would've punched holes in your boat if you were in a sea. Hope you replace all bolts and pins... with Japanese S/S.

    Did you check that pin on the rudder linkage arm. That looks corroded also and be next. Obviously you should do the other side. That one below the water line could use a zinc too. As it is all connected I believe the galvanic action effected the bolts above the water line. All they need is moisture for a reaction and the metal to corrode. When it is connected to unprotected metal below the water line, through the casset, galvanic action can effect metal above waterline just through moisture.

    Its mind blowing that those bolts snapped . Are they 1\2 or 3\4 dia ?
    Might have been over tightened with a rattle gun on installation ?
    Seem to be some really substandard workmanship on those boats as highlighted by Ruby Rose .

    Breaking down around good cruisers is a blessing. It's a shame they made such junk bolts. I see so many boats showing metal fatigue around year 10-15. I wonder if electrolysis causes that?

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  7 місяців тому

      We were super fortunate! The steering system on our boat was undersized and is currently undergoing a refit under warranty. Not sure about the metal fatigue on older boats.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  6 місяців тому

      We do!!! The system was originally under designed by the engineering firm, Gurit. The system had been audited and redesigned. A warranty replacement was scheduled by Seawind but we did not have the chance to stay still in one place long enough to have the material and the shipwright meet us. The refit of the entire steering system has been now completed while in Raiatea and it’s a beauty. All the older Seawind 1600 are being refitted under warranty and the new ones are fitted with the new system from the factory. You don’t fined many boat builders who do that! It looks like that bolt was suffering from fatigue and it had been cracked for some time and it finally broke. When it comes to strength stainless steel is not the best choice for bolts. Since corrison resistance is so important for boat hardware there is alternatives to stainless steel. Inconel would be a good choice.

    • @HarborsUnknown

    That is way too much drama for a boat of that price. I assume that the bolts are all A4-80 that broke? If not I'd suggest change them out on both sides to higher load rated SS.

    I am going to ask a dumb question, but why dont cruisers carry a small inline duct booster and like 2m of flexible ducting? I keep seeing people in the lockers complaining about heat or fumes and a small inline fan/duct booster would at least change out the air every couple minutes

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  7 місяців тому +1

      It was a fun day!! You have a point about the rudder design, it has pros and cons.
      Definitely great for performance and the ability to beach the boat but a risk of damage with floating debris.
      I think that the new refit which you will see in upcoming videos solves all the problems with the gudgeons with a much more robust design. The fact the we have a blade sticking down in the water remains. The safest design is certainly a skegged rudder.

    This is the second major steering failure on a relatively new boat. Something is wrong. Either the sailplan is poorly engineered or the sails are cut wrong. Or you aren't trimming the sails well. Something is over stressing the steering system.
