  • If you have a Breville BOV800XL smart oven with a flaky start button, the problem is likely a 5¢ microswitch. This video shows how to access that switch and swap it with the ℉/℃ button, which will bring new life to your oven.
    0. Disconnect from the power.
    1. Remove all the screws on the back, all the screws holding the feet on the bottom, and the 1 hidden screw below the control panel (through an access hole on the bottom).
    2. Remove the back, then pull the cover back and rotate it towards the control panel to expose the power and control wires.
    3. Disconnect the power and control wires, then remove all the screws holding the control panel to the cover, and then all the screws holding the white plastic cover on. The bottom center screw is slightly shorter.
    4. Remove the control panel, verify that the start microswitch is mushy. Desolder the start microswitch and the ℉/℃ microswitch, and then swap them and resolder.
    5. Reassemble, taking care to install the control panel gasket correctly and firmly seat the power and control cables.

    I gave a thumbs down because this video conveniently skips over how to remove the housing cover. For anyone wanting to know...The housing cover and display will end up being removed as one piece. There is an additional screw on the bottom of the unit directly below the display board. Once you uncsrew that, pull the housing directly to the rear. Then, it should be able to lift up and off. As you lift the housing/control board off you'll need to carefully disconnect a ribbon cable so watch out for that.

      Most of the first 90 seconds comprises the silly time lapse video of watching the screws be removed one at a time. A diagram or two would’ve been much quicker and better. 2020 hindsight is always better, and easier, isn’t it?
      But with only 8000 views after 18 months, there certainly wasn’t much financial incentive for a more comprehensive, or more easily understood production…

      @@OnerousEthic I agree.. instead of spending so much time filming turning of screws more time should have been spent on getting the cover off.

    Thanks for the video, always helpful to see how to take things apart. I have this same oven and it seems to be smoking out the top when I allow it to heat up. Planning on doing some troubleshooting soon. Thanks again!

    Thank you for this, the disassembly was tricky but your video helped to see what was needed. I used new 5mm tall contact switches that many sources sell. In my case I also had an intermittent flashing of the display and buzzer, almost like a loose wire. I diagnosed that if I pushed on certain areas of the mainboard while it was powered on, it would trigger or fix the issue. I used a soldering iron to reflow every SMD connection to resolve any hairline fractures which I have seen before on other boards. The fix worked, and the flashing buzzing is gone and we have a reliable oven again.

    Hi! I too have a Breville toaster oven and when I opened it to see if I could repair it, I found a large piece of what appears to be asbestos. Its located near the wiring in the control portion. In your video and others I have watched, the asbestos is not there. Our unit, according to Breville, was manufactured in 2012. What do you suggest the average homeowner do? I have contacted Breville and their customer service person knew nothing about it but told me she would ask around and call me back. I'm still waiting. Thanks.

      It will not be asbestos, but fiberglass. There would be no point in using asbestos; it wouldn't be cheaper just in material costs, let alone handling and compliance.
      Fiberglass is still an occupational hazard, but won't be a problem for you briefly handling it.

      There are several identical microswitches. What I did was unsolder the F/C switch, which is almost never used, and swapped it with the main switch.
      The technique to lift a switch is to grab it with pliers and heat the 4 legs in turns until you can get it free. Solder wick may also help. The trick for solder wick is to apply flux, which will help the solder flow onto the wick.

    We were just given one of these by a friend. And my problem is the mode selection knob malfunctions. Used to be able to pull on it or push on it a little bit to get it to move but now it won’t allow you to make a selection.

  • @Akosarz
    @Akosarz 3 роки тому

    I’m wondering if this might be the fix for mine. The start button will go on/off rapidly, while it beeps, almost like a broken record over and over. It’s so annoying. We have to give it a smack to the side to make it reset, but then we have to set all of the modes up again and hit start. Even then, it will still go wonky the start button goes on/off. You think just replacing the buttons will solve the issue? Not sure what else it can be, but it seems like if we lightly touch the buttons while the oven is on, it starts going crazy.

      You can see it @2:42. It's labelled BZ101 and it looks like a black plastic cylinder with a small hole in the top. If you don't have a soldering iron, you can probably file a hole in one of the traces heading to or from that buzzer.

    There's a lot of info here but unfortunately, you didn't show how the cover came off. The video cuts to a cover-less oven. I had removed all the same screws, but my cover is still captured in some way I can't see, and I can't get it off to work on the inside. I was hopeful this video might show that, but it skipped over. Thanks, anyway.

      @@Avidiax thanks! I thought about it, then realized I would have to to take it out of service for 7 to 10 days, waiting for replacement backlight LEDs (that's all that's wrong with it). My wife cooks with it daily, so I just put it back together. Maybe I can find a parts list and order them to have on hand, when I take it apart next time. Wish I could find a BOM online. Of course, it could be a different component, like a dropping resistor, voltage regulator, or a burned PCB trace/bad solder joint. We like the oven, but this planned obsolescence is maddening. Very few things are designed with repair in mind anymore. Thanks again!

      This comment is 2 weeks old, but for anyone else who stumbles across this video and wants to know how to remove the cover: there is a screw under the one being unscrewed at 1:46, its the one holding the control panel in place. Once you’ve got that one off, both feet unscrewed, and the back panel removed, you can lightly lift each side of the cover out, and then shimmy it backwards to dislodge the top from the front of the oven, if that makes sense. From there you can follow along at 1:55

    • @Avidiax
      @Avidiax  6 місяців тому +1

      To replace the on/off switch, you need a replacement switch. I just sacrifice the ℉/℃ button by swapping the two. Then you have a flaky ℉/℃ button, which doesn't matter, and a practically brand new on/off switch.
