I was one of the lucky firsts to receive the 921 Forged irons after pre-ordering them back in 2020. Been playing them ever since. It’s a solid iron, but the difference in feel between the Chromoly slotted 4-7 irons and the 1025E short irons is pretty drastic. The Chromoly irons feel springier and faster but there’s really not much feel on a flushed shot. The short irons, on the other hand, feel more marshmallowy and buttery on flushed shots. I do have some trouble getting my 4 iron trajectory up where I want it. My ball flight tends to be low with it, regardless. All in all, I am perfectly content with them. The 923 Forged definitely look nicer aesthetically, but it’s not really worth spending the money to get virtually the same performance.

Mike.... I see reviews that talk about the static lofts of irons but never see the dynamic-delivered lofts when testing the clubs. The 31 degree static loft on the JPX 921 7 IRON I would guess is 27 or less at impact for you and better players. This is what matters because many recreational golfer that flip the club at impact actually add loft and that 31 degrees becomes 35 or more.
I ordered these as well (7/12). My fitter said to expect 6-8 weeks. Seems that others on the Mizuno forums have been waiting even longer. Hope that corrects itself!
Michael your strike was a little off today because every other test I saw the spin was in the 6k. Love this line of JPX 921. If I can get the distance from them they will be my next set. If not I'll have to go to the hot metal or pro. Thanks for the review.
It's an absolute shame that Mizuno didn't make a full lefty set. I was super hyped looking to move from my 900 forged to these. Hopefully there's enough demand and they come out with a lefty set later. Fingers crossed
Owen Davies that would be great if I were looking to play bladed clubs. I’m a 15 handicap and the forgiveness, distance and shot height that the non tour models gives is what attracted me to the 900 forged. I also play a 4 and 5 hybrid so having the long iron forged option doesn’t help either. Just disappointing to see Mizuno abandon the mid handicap lefty market.
@@damigetsez they have made the tour a little more forgiving in this version. I use the MP SEL set blades from 5-w and strike them fine. Current handicap is 10. Don't be scared of a less forgiving club might actually make you a better player
Owen Davies I appreciate the suggestion, but my point is the disappointment in Mizuno to stop making a lefty set of a line that for the last 3 iterations (850 - 919) has had a lefty set. It’s great that their lefty offering now includes the tour model, but it’s sad to see that it was at the expense of a model line that they claim to be a catch all for a large span of golfers. If I were to be forced to play something a little less forgiving I would probably play the taylormade P760 over the tours.
The average smash factor with a 7 iron is 1.33 on the PGA. 1.42 is for a 5 iron. And 127 mph is the ball speed average for a 6 iron (120 mph for a 7 iron). Quite impressive !

Get a set of strong lofted irons and suddenly you need to replace all your wedges 🤦♂️ all fine and well hitting 7 irons 190 but what happens when you hit your PW 150 yet your next wedge only goes 125.
Get each irons bent 1 or 2 degrees up until your wedges so they all gap out with between 12 to 15 yards gaps, all depends how far you hit it to determine the equal gaps. But a fitter can adjust the forged clubs easily to achieve perfect gapping
I would ignore the distances in the video. The average golfer doesn't swing at 90mph and therefore won't carry 190 yards. I would go and test them for realistic distances. Great review otherwise 👍🏼
I just got fitted using Trackman, indoors, and ended up with these irons. My swing speed, ball speed and smash factor are very very close to these #'s, but my spin was higher. These 7 iron yardage numbers are about 10 yards further than my 6 iron yardage numbers. Looks like he was using a taylor made ball. I was using Pro V1's. Could the ball or the fact this is outdoors account for these disparity in distances?
Your ball speeds were very consistent but flights were not - what was the shaft they sent you? I do wish they would stop increasing the lofts - I think a 32/33 modern 7 iron loft is where they absolutely should stop - for simply gapping reasons alone. My modern desired spec, and what I've bent my clubs to is (PW,9,8,7,6,5,4) -> (47,42,37,32,28,24,21) - it just works and there is no reason for anything stronger - it brings you back to a 47 degree PW, gives you 2/3 stronger mid irons and basically converts your 5 iron into an old bladed 4 iron loft.
My friends have clubs with 27 degree 7 irons 😂😂 no matter what number is written on the bottom a 27 degree iron is difficult to hit and won’t help them
@@TheMadstrad57 I have the Mizuno 919 Hot Metal Pros, bent weaker to the lofts I stated above, and they work even better - and they also properly gap from my weakened 47 PW into 'normal' wedges. A 32 degree 7 iron, which is 3 degrees stronger than a traditional 35-degree blade, when you add a hot face and a little less spin, already gets you into old 5 iron distances - so what's the point when you still need to have clubs from 135 and in?
Paul. I also have the 919 hot natal pros. I was seriously thinking of doing the same thing that you have done by making my irons weaker. I have a pretty low ball flight and I have alway thought about tweaking the loft on them. Don’t really care about getting extra distance out of them , but more for a higher ball flight and stopping power with that angle coming into the green. What do you think?
@@joegarza1835 I'm fortunate that I live in Toronto very close to the TXG guys and went there for a gapping session with my old CF-16s (which we bent weaker) and then again with the 919 Hot Metal Pros - gain weaker - and they work amazingly well. I honestly would take my loft spec as a starting point and see how you like it - I spent a lot of time figuring it out and it just works. (PW,9,8,7,6,5) ->(47,42,37,32,28,24) which translates into carries for me of (133,146,159,172,185,197) with a Mizuno Tour B X ball - I also gapped them, for interest, with the Titleist AVX and pretty much every club is 3to5 yards longer with the AVX and has 500 less spin. Why I like my gapping is it starts the short end of the bag at the oldest PW Blade Spec of 47 degrees (what Tiger uses) and then it also gives the old 9 iron Spec of 42 degrees, what follows is a stretching of the 8,7,6,5 by increments to end with a 24 degree 5 iron, which is the traditional loft of a 4 iron blade - thus by doing all of the above, I have freed up and created a club that I can add to the bag - and without hesitation, this has absolutely improved my ability to score on the course. I get my 3 desired wedges (52,57,62) - my 52 is my 118-122 club, which I can also back off and play a 90&80 % short with, plus use it for chipping around the green, and I get my 56, bent to 57, which maxes at 105 and can back it down to 80, but I also heavily use around the green for pitching the ball in that difficult 50to25 range, I use the 62 if it's a perfect 75 yard fairway shot or for short-sided shots when necessary. The real benefit of stretching the lofts is I get another hybrid (a 21 and a 16). The 21 is a Taylormade GapR HIgh #4 22 that I play open to 21, and had TXG fit a 110 gram X Stellfiber i110 shaft into that plays 39.5" length (2/3 iron length) than I can fade or draw high into greens from 185 to 210 - I absolutely love this club. The 16 hybrid is a #2 Mizuno 2020CLK with a 94 gram Tensei White TX flex - I use it as both a driving iron as the flight is lower (shaft also 1/2" shorter than spec and plays 40.5" - it's my 220-225 carry club - the CLK2020 is very good low in the face when hitting of tight fairways - the TX Flex really keeps the head in control so it is excellent as a tee club on those tight Par 4s also. Then I'm 14.5 3wood and Driver. After a lot of experimentation and trying to really make the long end of my bag as good as possible, I replaced the DG 120gram S300 shaft in my 5 iron with a lighter Steelfiber i110CW shaft - it just gives me a bit more clubhead speed being lighter - and when I want to go for it, I can extend the carry from my 195-197 'range' to 202-205'ish. For me, making the move from being a 9-11 handicap down to 4-6 where I am now, it was 100% working on my chipping and pitching, but it was also making big improvements in my ability to hit those 175-225 shots - and that is what the Hot Metals Pros and Hybrids, with the right shafts, have allowed me to do.
Did you realize that the 8 iron thru the PW are not forged from the chromolly? Only the 7-4 iron. I purchased without knowing this. The distances fall off in the 1025 carbon. Very disappointing. I am returning them.
Quick question Michael The previous model had a boron metal which for me personally felt like hitting a hard golf ball. I stuck with them for over a year but really disliked the feel from them. Are these new models any different in your view? Great clip as usual

Something doesn't look right here. Even on a toe shot you had a smash of 1.43. PGA tour average with a 7-iron is 1.33 according to trackman. Your club speed is same as PGA, but your ballspeed is 8MPH higher even on a toe strike. Just saying....

Lol by how much are your distances falling off
Mike are these a worthwhile upgrade from the 2016 ez forged?
Yes 🙌
Quick question Michael
The previous model had a boron metal which for me personally felt like hitting a hard golf ball. I stuck with them for over a year but really disliked the feel from them. Are these new models any different in your view? Great clip as usual
I play these 921 Forged for the 5-6-7 irons (and I play Apex MB for PW-9-8 irons) all on Aerotech SteelFiber i95 shafts
Are they any different to the 919 ? 🤔
If this club is more forgiving and flights farther than the hmb, why isn't this offered with a 3 iron while the hmb has a 3 iron?
I don't need to hit my 7 iron those kinds of distances. OMG the gaps from SW - GW - PW ----- 7 iron 190 yard carry. Not needed imo.
Yep, folk will buy them then find they have a 30 yard gap when they get down to their wedges.
Probably go ahead and buy the 8 and 9 iron
I love the look of these irons but have heard a rumour they are only Chromoly in 4-7, 8-G being 1025?
yes that is true. it is mentioned on their website.
@@rsicho Thanks I found it, I wonder how that effects distance gaping between the 7 and 8 irons. Not a problem to me as I'm fortunate to know a quality fitter who can make the necessary gaping adjustments.
Forged or p770?
👀
Beware. The 8-Gap are not chromoly. They’re 1025E. I just received my set. I feel pretty misled by this. Contacted mizuno and they said that’s the way they were designed.
it is mentioned on their website...
@@rsicho it was only added after the fact. It wasn’t up during the pre-order phase. My guess is a lot of people reached out to them confused and feeling misled.
How are finding the distance gaping between 7 and 8? I'm pleased I picked up your comment as I also wasn't aware and naturally don't want a 20 yard gap between clubs at the business end of the bag.
@@leeshaw3733 I haven’t seen an issue with gapping. I’ve been getting about 175 out of the 7 iron and maybe 165 or so out of the 8. That was my first worry with the difference in material, but it hasn’t been an issue.
@@rburda6 Good news, good numbers thanks.
Something doesn't look right here. Even on a toe shot you had a smash of 1.43. PGA tour average with a 7-iron is 1.33 according to trackman. Your club speed is same as PGA, but your ballspeed is 8MPH higher even on a toe strike. Just saying....
Chromoly?
Chrome Molly, not chromally
You're not aware that people from other countries pronounce some words differently than Americans?
@@jasonmitchell7550 I am now
@@jasonmitchell7550 I don't mind how people pronounce it. The point was, it's two words not one. Thank you

I think they stamped the wrong number on the head... that thing is absurd.
Unfortunate that mizuno can't fully support us lefties like Callaway does!
For gods sake stop saying SORT OF ! Totally distracting.....
Not totally distracting, just sort of...
