  • Hello and welcome to @ianbarlowuk
Ok so here are the basic steps ,,,
Dry wood ash powder from a previous old fire that's totally gone out is rolled in the cotton wool to form a tube
Roll the tube in the same direction a few times to further tighten it - notice I roll forward then lift up and move back
When the tube starts to feel very tight and is getting warm
GO FOR IT ! With the wood
Use a rapid sawing motion with medium downward force - practice will let you know how much force is correct
    Stop and inspect the tube
When you have a wisp of smoke
Rip open a bit of the tube at the place that the smoke is coming from (if you need to?)
This is to allow air to get to the ember
with this one i did not need to rip into the tube as the red ember had burnt its way to the outside itself)
When the ember is glowing red
Add the ember to your tinder - for me this was paper
Blow (or waft with your hand as a fan)
Don't give up you will get it to work
imho fire roll is far far far easier than bow drill - I have got a fire from bow drill and it was hard work, please see the bushcraft playlists
    Good luck 😀👍
    Oh and ,,,,
Don't forget to have a look at my bushcraft playlists when you have time 👍
    Feedback welcome in the comments
You can see some of the technique as seen on ...
    Bear Grylls
    Ray Mears
    all good fun!
    hope you enjoyed the video
