I always liked Matt. He was always the willing participant. He was a slave, a prisoner, Stewart's helper who docked his pay over a peg lol. I always liked him.
He even once showed us his cheeky bum! 🫣
Matt even once showed off his cheeky bum! 🫣
A good egg.
Matt and Alice were always my favourites, in fact I’ve had a big thing about Alice Roberts for nearly fourth years!
It's so nice to see Him smiling and happy again !:-)
Let's take a moment to acknowledge the fantastic job of EDITING these episodes.
Pulling this all together creating a cohesive story was a monumental accomplishment.
🏆Very well done, everyone. See you back here for an exciting Modbury- Day 3. 👍😁
I hate to be negative but they had almost a year to edit this episode and still managed to miss showing us the oldest find on episode 2 (the medieval coin). Not saying it’s bad editing but it’s not great 😩
Agree, though I can't believe they trimmed so hard. Surely with all those pits and people they could have come up with closer to an hour, per day. Some non-talking time would be good: let us just WATCH the people work for a little while.
@@MckIdyl possibly saved for Patreon members of various levels. We are treated to a wonderful amount of 'extras' in Dig Watch, the 3 days & post-ex... it's so worth it. 🥰
@@MckIdyl you do realize the amount of labor pay involved in each minute you see is in the tens of thousands right? and that its all purely crowd funded? yall are getting this FOR FREE, off the backs of their labor and the patreons generosity. if you got nothing nice to say hush your mouths.
John Gater... BEST CAMERAMAN... "Okay, I need a shot to camera of the slate..." picks it up and holds it in front of the lens himself. "Print it! Right, off to the Pub with ya!"
The new architectural guy is great. A great new team member.
Thanks to the entire Time Team for another brilliant episode :)
Slate enters shot slowly from left. Wonderful. Thank you for keeping Time Team alive and immersing us all in the wonderful world of archaeology.
I think this is one of the best Time Teams ever. Including all the Channel 4 ones. It's great that Helen, Carenza, Stewart ,Matt & others have been in all the TT officials as well !
I really like the animated footsteps tracing Stewart's walkabouts. Well done whoever thought of doing that.
JK Rowling
Matt is always young on my mind.
I'm guessing he must be late 40s?
if you guys like him in the team look up the series dig for britain he has done a good bit of televised archaeology on that program as well.
30:21 "I did Bake-Off" had me 🤣💀
I'm now well used to the new line-up, and equally as keen to watch as I was 20 years ago.....
Loving the more casual camerawork sprinkled in this series and the spirit of the eccentric historians and experts who bring their passion to us in such fun ways!
Yep, TIME TEAM really is BACK!
This one made me smile, laugh, and cannot wait until tomorrow!
Worth every penny being a Patreon, and all the Dig Watch extras, and interviews, 3D models worth it, worth it, worth it!
I agree with you... so worth it :)
Thought the 3-D of the cloister was absolutely marvelous!
This dig/set of episodes has felt the most like I'm watching old school Time Team of all the shows so far since the reboot! I was one of the very early Patreon patrons, and I'm so glad to see all the hard work and big dreams of the past few years have held strong and gotten better and better. ❤
@@micarocks and Tony R. is back for new Specials and Documentaries, how great is that!
@@brettbrown9261 I'm so glad they found a hosting format Tony felt he could comfortably do without over-taxing himself. I know Phil doesn't feel up to coming back, but I think a mini guest appearance of some kind along a similar vein would be such a treat!
It's always fun to see contributors from old shows. Mark Griffin (musket ball maker) was also in the Season 2 episode at Hylton Castle back in '95
Love how they incorporated the “long lost toy”. 🤟🏼
Time Team at its best. All those reality programs. Yuk. This is REAL reality TV. Well done. We need more.
This is absolutley superb! Thank you.
Annoyingly, I live only a couple of miles away from Modbury and I had no idea this was happening!
The Madrigal was lovely!
What an incredible team of vintage and new folks. Great chemistry for a newer Time Team. This segment is so interesting! I’m a Patreon member and urge anyone who enjoys the new Time Team to also become a Patreon member. Wish they had a discounted Senior/Retired membership level.
Love ya Mick! Rest easy buddy. The work is still going on. Love this show!
Well done John Gater! Great camera work 😁
This was fabulous. Matt's always been one of my favorites, too.
I love how people sacrifice there gardens be they front or back, if can find out more of there local history. What legends they are
A time team thing and now channel 4 have that copycat show, what's it called?
I love the diversity in the team. All different kind of backgrounds, generations, etcetera. It gives a very nice broad and diverse view on the dig and is very rich in that sense.
Brilliant! Absolutely cracking dig so far ❤ It’s so lovely to see familiar & new faces (do I miss Phil Harding? Yes, absolutely. Am I loving seeing Helen, Corenza, Matt, John & Stewart? Emphatically yes!) Dr Gus is just fabulous- he has such a warmth about him that I just love!
I miss Phil as well!
Miss Victor and Mick Aston too - but it is still a joy to watch the new TT 🤓
Nice to hear a lawn-owner happy to see what archaeological treasures might be under it. In the old series the prospect was frequently met with much less enthusiasm.
That's what a reputable reputation gets you , access to very special places, from a backyard to Sutton Hoo, and thanks to TIME TEAM we get to be a part of it....
Tony’s obvious glee at wrecking a few gardens was always fun though.
oh but dont forget the wonderful lady who owns escher place. that lady actually did a video with Dani detailing the book she ended up writing on her home. i bought a copy and its a splendid detailing of a prototype of what became tudor architecture.
33:18
John even knows how to time panning downward. go Gater go hehe
Love Carenza and Helen, but would pay real money to sit in the pub of an evening and stand a pint (or three) with Stewart.
As a fellow cartographer and terrain reader, I identify with his contributions the most.
Cheers from the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
The Oregon Trail is extremely interesting too! 😁
That was an absolutely fabulous trip.... Wonderful sights and sooo different!
We were spell bound once again by your filming....
The music you choose is excellent!
We feel like we have now been there too!
Thank you, you guys!😊
Thank you for describing some measurements in metric.
Not all of us are over 65 years old.
21:19 love the serenade Helen. Beautiful. Cool moment
I can hardly wait for part 3. This is just so exciting.
Hello from a long time German Patreon :) nice to see the new 2024 (2023?) episodes.
Ah now I see what happened, Phil met his old friend John Gayter at the Modbury Inn at the top of Brownston street almost across the road from Traine House and together they drank John's winnings of 15 0r 20 pints of Ale from his bet with Matt.Maybe he'll be ok to dig a massive trench in the garden of my old house South Hayes on church house almost opposite Moon lane, just down the hill a bit.
My granny Trinick always used to say that the house that burnt down before the war was a wing of an old Champrernowne houuse andgoingby thestuff that was rescued from the fire was stored in the old washhouse at the back it was certainly old .
Roll on episode 3 this was an exciting cliffhanger episode,Well done Time Team .Perhaps Helen will find thePriory and even another gold coin to match the one she discovered way back in TimeTeam days, lets hope so .
At 5:27 Champernowne was a courthouse it would have a courtyard and gatehouse. Now I'm off to go down a rabbit hole in researching 'courthouse' and 'courtyard'. Had never thought about the origins of the word courtyard in relation to anything much less a courthouse.
Loving the maps and how it all ties in. Enjoyed that in the original Time Team but these are much more effective. While it so great to have each day be an episode an hour would be so much better than 36 minutes with ads. Hope the dendro results are fantastic.
There is so much going on in this dig, it really is edge of the seat viewing (not something usually applied to archaeology). I am hoping for Day 3 to find the priory footprint. So glad to be a patron of this show.
As a Patreon is so wonderful seen all those findings and even graves in 3D. It's absolutely breathtaking.
i want to thank you for contributing financially. this show helps my depression and anxiety immeasurably. you are responsible for that along with the rest of the patreons. i cannot thank you all enough
Soooooo excited for this! I’ve been a huge time team fan since I was a kid and I grew up near Modbury so this is really quite a moment for me!
Love Matt!❤
Missed joke opportunity there Dr Gus “this cake will go with a BANG”
I was prepared to not like Richard, but, I like him very well for the explanations he's given
I really miss Mick Aston and Tony Robinsons commentary.
Tony will probably comment on the Sutton Hoo dig this summer, I think.
You and I both. Mick was a wealth of walking history! I have a lot of respect for that man, and I too wish he was still here with us. I always loved his 'Blacklands' English accent. Am I even correct in deducing that? I don't know since I am a US citizen. That's what it sounded like to me, any how. I gave your post a thumbs up too.
My favorites were Mic and Phil. Phil brought excitement, enthusiasm and humor to every dig.
new crew is great too. Very happy to have new Time Team!
@@cortrichards8179 Mick had a Black Country accent, he came from Oldbury near Birmingham in the West Midlands. He is very much missed. A few people I work with have met him and apparently he was just as genuine and lovely off screen as he was on it.
It's always great to see the team together.
I felt the same as Gus, when he was asked to mix the gunpowder: Should I do that?
Helps to have someone who knows what they are doing :-)
I remember helen talking about doing processions and so forth in the original series episode on salisbury calthedral and now shes carrying on the grand choral tradition of english piety. how awesome is that.
Beautiful!
Time Team Official, I really enjoyed watching this, so I hit the like button!
This dig really makes me think of Mick - great Mediaeval archaeology and a fantastic community dig! ❤
the technology they're using to show examples and the town in 3d is really cool
So much history wherever you dig. Beautiful countryside.
Ooowww I'd love to have a map of Stewert's walk, were off to Modbury in June! Cant wait for part 3 🙂
Nice bit of camera work, John!
I love the high tec gps scanner operator stopping (9:45) to note something with pen and paper😅
This is so fascinating! I love seeing all the familiar faces and especially love Matt teasing John with the centimenter-per-pint equivalency. Sure hope I can visit Modbury and other TT locations one day.
Rip Nick even in Canada your presence is missed.
Dr Sophie Kay is an excellent addition to the team.
After all these years, he is still a cutie!
Brilliant! Well Done, as Always. Cheers from New Mexico, USA!
OMG. I'm in Las Cruces. LOVING the wind! Not. Love Time Team 😊
@@ChristineKane-on8bf We have that wind up here in Albuquerque, too! Amazing that there are three of us commenting from New Mexico in the half dozen newest comments!
Great stuff. Just like Time Team of old. 👍
So interesting to see the test pits and the community participation!
I love Time Team, so enjoyable and exciting! Thanks Time Team My favorite, Stewie., Farmer Rich.
Has anyone been on your farm and metal detected it??
Keep up the good work. Great quality.
Fan from Tennessee!
It’s so nice to see this show again, good to see some old stories and archaeology join together and tell the history of a place, the mystery is always intriguing ✌️❤️🇬🇧
great show, thanks all, much love from Cleveland Ohio
I love the way John points at maps with freebie pens. In the old days sometimes he'd get crazy and point at a map with a Stabilo Boss. But age comes to us all.
John Gater! Stewart! Helen! Matt! Love you all! 😄🫶
Miss Richard the original building man but Richard new building man seems lovely! 😊
Wherever you are Raksha, Henry, Paul and Ian Powlesland, just know that you are missed! Would love to have seen you. Just saying! 😁
Paul, Henry, and Richard Morris have appeared in last year's episodes 😊
Time Team is awesome!

Loved seeing Carenza and Helen, Stewart, and John. Like the new host Gus to, but i miss Tony and Mick. And Alex...can you get Alex back too? And where is Phil?
My local church has some similar markings on its pillars. Its a 900+ y/o church called Felkirk in Yorkshire. They originally held the pews for the Lords of the Manor, and there was another for musicians and an organ. Its has some pretty scary to look at cracks in the walls above the arches although they are safe-ish lol. Felkirk is a much smaller church though. They have a crypt for the Monckton family hidden under the aisle.
Loving this. Can’t wait for tomorrow 👍
Love this.. my hairdresser is half way up the hill.. a whole new world in wonderful Modbury.
Nice thumbnail, pretty much how he looked for much of the day! :p
I'm still trying toward out Gus' s claim of "12000 men fighting in the streets of Modbury' - the main road is wide enough for about 40 shoulder to shoulder!
It's quite a large engagement by English Civil War standards as well. Using some principles laid out in battlefield manuals from the era I can work out how that many men could have been crammed into such an apparently small area. What I'm struggling with is Modbury being deep in the heart of the Royalist South-West yet the account we're being presented with is of Parliamentary dominance. Okay 1642 is the year it all kicks off so there are anomalies across the country yet something of this scale should feature in the histories. After all most of the famous battles fought in the South-West between Hopton and Waller are smaller than this one.
Addendum:- I have found a few lines referencing fighting in Modbury but not on the scale suggested. Both sides were liable to exaggerate the size of the opposing force and casualties inflicted. Not only that but a general shortage of weapons and trained men meant that many 'soldiers' were little more than agricultural labourers armed with clubs, axes, or even less. I would estimate that fewer than a thousand men combined were armed with firearms and most of the fighting was a street brawl. Casualties did not top double figures and may be less than a dozen other side. This would account for the lack of finds. The enterprising model shop should be congratulated on its idealised account of the battle though.
It sounds like local myth, retellings and historic propaganda on both sides has added an extra 0 over time to the number of soldiers in each battle group, considering I think the Plymouth garrison during its siege a few months later numbered about 2500 in total.
Really love the info, fun and gizmos.🎉
My grandparents and mother used to live in old train back in the twenties ,my grandfather Joseph Shannon worked as an electrician on burgh island ,I have a short history on old train house.
It was so fascinating seeing how the gun powder and lead shots were made.
Really great team on this dig.
Great episode.
Great to see history like that.
Cheers!
Excited for day three!
now Helen is also singing! Crush deepened :)
Congrats on the newest dig!
Brilliant, ♥ medieval archaeology.
That little piece of flint looks like it could have been a flintlock flint.
Lets hope that you find more pre-historic stuff as well
Howdy from Texas!
Fantastic ad always! ❤
Sweet action fun!!🎉

So much fun!
My Ancestor was a weaver in England before he and his family left for the new world in 1633.
Was they Dutch??
Ready as always 😀
Excellent episode. Shame they didn't show the Medieval coin Carenza held in more detail.

chiming in as both a blower and cutter of glass i would be astounded if carenza were wrong. looks vaguely like georgian era cut crystal. i recommend having someone shave off about a gram and subjecting it to mass spectrographic analysis. the specific fluxes and glass forming agents used in the formulation of the glass is as unique as a fingerprint, and can be used for dating and location of manufacturing quite as handily as mortars in castle walls.
Runaway lane is a bit of a giveaway - "Runaway, runaway!"
also if anyone wants to know, you blow a bubble, cut it off the blowpipe and put it on a solid iron to work the lip, flare it slightly, and then press it down over an octagonal piece of wood or in more modern times, a skeletal structure of metal, and it will shrink slightly to shape as it cools. even today fin molded cups of many different shapes are popular among goblet collectors. goblet making is basically the neurosurgery of glassmaking skills. many many glassblowers, myself included, study how to make them as a means of skill building. what a cracking find.
A pail day in Modbury…
I'm going to throw my wide-brimmed hat into the ring here and state the claim made for a major battle in Modbury is an exaggeration. Props to the model soldier emporium for making the most out of it but all the evidence I can uncover points to something small, maybe involving 2-3,000 poorly armed men engaged in a street brawl is what actually happened. Should finds show up I will happily admit to my error but given that the South-Western Royalists and Parliamentarians between them struggled to put 12,000 men into the field at the major battles of 1643 (Braddock Down, Stratton, Lansdown, Roundway Down) I cannot envisage Modbury being equally large yet forgotten. Which is not to deny Modbury being a fascinating place to investigate but the ECW cannot be the prime historical reason. Thanks for encouraging me to do some research though. Always look forward to learning new things.
An Airfix HO scale WW2 Soviet soldier. So many of us knew it instantly.
