All these years later and time gone by, I still miss seeing Mick Aston on these wonderful episodes of Time Team which at times, seems not to have aged at all.

Top marks for the wood craftsman who made the roof arch reconstruction. Its so brilliant to see these labour intensive and skilled design/workmanship skills staying alive. Standards and pride, were so different in days gone by.
i've never seen Mick so happy as he was when Tony spotted that house in the corner, and then he commenting on how fast Carenza is (she really ran fast there)
I don't wish to be a comment hog, but again I was blown away by the way Robin was handling the property deeds dated 1305....no gloves, just piled up like playing cards, as if they are not particularly delicate or precious and rare!!! Robin was such a delightful person and so knowledgeable, too. I would have been terrified of even breathing on those documents. What a privilege to have access to such antiquities!!!
Loved it whenever Beric Morley came around. His enthusiasm was infectious. So sad to realize that he passed away right around the time I discovered Time Team (January 2015). I would have loved to see a 13-episode season of just Beric instructing the viewers in architectural history
I enjoy TT, but this episode is better than average since it involves an entire village and the forensic examination of their homes' DNA. Seeing that gap around the 12th century cellar wall of the rectory was fascinating.
It's really cool to see how property owners for all intents and purposes, willingly allow a stranger to dig a large hole in their "garden" the lady at around 22:20 or so has a perplexed look but then smiles and says "might be very interesting wouldn't it" The British knack for understatement is refreshing...

I know a lot of people do not like Tony, but I think they fail to understand the dynamics of his relationship with the others as well as Tim Taylor's scripting of some of the dialog for educational purposes. Most people don't realize that Tony and Mick were friends before they worked in television together. It was Mick who picked Tony for his role!
I can guarantee from personal knowledge (as I've said before, Mick was my personal friend and mentor) that is true. Mick was often quiet and quite slow before mid-morning, and I will duel anyone who says it was because of his love of Cabernet Sauvignon...:-). I work the same way (although not the Cab Sauv: I don't like it). That first cup of coffee in the morning starts the process off.
This is such an odd episode from an American point of view. People being so chill about having bits of their house that date back to the 17th or 15th or 12th century. In the States, and especially on the West coast like I am, you're doing really good if you can find a 100 year old building. Being all like "And this is our 12th Century wall" is like saying "And this is our unicorn".
I understand, I live in Argentina and my city was founded in 1882, so we protect houses from the late nineteenth century because those are our historic buildings!

In Japan, there is a serious problem of that nature, which is leading to a lot of old buildings getting torn down. Because so much of the country has a TRULY ancient history, things that are a bit more recent (though still of great historical value) are not protected, and many are being torn down. It is a real struggle for those of us trying to preserve the remaining stock of 200+ year old traditional houses. I myself live in an old farmhouse (remodelled and restored completely) that is probably at least 300 years old (a well-known sculptor was born in the house in 1735 or 6, so it is older than that). I bought it for the price of the land alone. Nobody else thought it was worth rebuilding. BUT ITS 300 YEARS OLD! (I said). "Pffffftttt! The buildings in Nara are 1300 years old, and the ones in Kyoto over 1000. Who cares about something that is just 300 years old?"
The building with longest continuous occupation in the world and still occupied is in New Mexico. Acoma Pueblo. 1,000 years, continuous being the key word. Not really "USA" originally, but certainly North American.
Estonians neither have that glorious history... but filled with blood and bones. We were part of vikings... but almost nothing have survived.... ... but i belive, that we all are connected... trough dna studies, we find truly strange connections. Head up! ;)
But whenever I watch TT episodes about the so-called prehistoric era, I wonder about both the American continents. Was there a bronze age, iron age, were there standing stones? Knowing that the Incans, Aztecs and Mayans built huge structures makes me very intrigued about how earlier history led up to those cultures and ancient Native American archaeology.
I am re-watching older TT episodes and I just love these back-gardens-in-villages episodes. The sleuthing required is really impressive. Beric Morley can look around and say, "that's a shelf for a lamp, that's a ledge for a roof beam, etc." Then they pan around a room with 8 people busily doing map and document work. Nothing like the newest seasons, in which there seems to be very little research and disappointing conclusions.
For some reason I really enjoyed this ep. usually I prefer the big open fields to the cramped little towns and such. Mick seemed so happy to. Bless him and Robin. Cant imagine what it was like for Phil and the gang to do a tv show for 20 years then its just done and gone. Out of your life. I dont recall seeing Beric or Keith before but loved their enthusiasm for it all. Also I kept worrying about that little blind bunny.
I loved the detail and human aspect that Robin could add to TT. Giving names, families, accurate dates to the more general finds in the field/trenches. The program was poorer after he left.
I greatly appreciate this show because they show such respect. They won't disturb the grave of a child's cat or disrupt the home of a blind rabbit. It's lovely.

I think you should research the Anglo Saxons more. They did keep records, they did document things, just not in the way Norman’s did. Many of their documents were used and useful to the conquerors, but were likely mostly destroyed later, as surplus to requirements.
You would pay a lot of money to have a beautiful timber framed roof like the one covered up by a false ceiling at 17:00. If it were my house, I would open it back up so you could see those graceful arches of wood.
John Doe They probably put the lower ceiling in to conserve heat. Trying to heat a place with a huge high ceiling would be very expensive. I am glad they didn't destroy it because that would be a shame. :)
Besides the heating problem, maybe the later structure would be compromised. I think it would be hellishly expensive to restore it to the original. But certainly, I would love to build a new structure with those timber frames and perhaps use modern technology to ensure heating was adequate. I am not sure how fragile those timbers are but I would certainly investigate the possibility of opening up that area and making it a feature in the house. Perhaps a private retreat or maybe a room which could in the summer be used as a focal room to gather a few friends for meetings and maybe having a light buffet meal or even a tea party. enjoy a step back into the past. The sort of area that poetry and legends thrive. A wonderful oak floor, scattered thick rugs and a few leather divans and horse hair armchairs should do the trick.
I can't help it!!! Poetry readings, discussing and reading Gothic novels, embroidery, historical information. This would bore some people immensely, but I would love it.
This is a classic episode - No flash, interesting excentriic experts like Robin Bush, Berwick and Kieth -great dialogue between respected intellectauls. It shows how much the commercial interference had eroded the heart and core of the program by the last series.
The last two series are what happens when something is focus grouped. It was what a group of people would say people would like. Ignoring the fact that the show was a successful series already and core audience already loved it
Im glad they finally showed the wall inside the old window. Was really curious about that. But wanted to see more on it. That space hasn't seen daylight in centuries. Also I wanted to see a lot more on that arch attic beam the guy made. He spent all that time and they barely touched on it. Wanted more. Also never touched on the little rabbit again. Wanted more there as well. Sorry to hear about Beric passing RIP. Was my first time seeing him I believe but instantly liked him.
It's amazing to me that they can just go up to people's houses and say, "Say, can we dig up your yard?" and people are perfectly agreeable or even excited. I guess in England there's a certain prestige to say, "Yes, there's a 15 century town house in my front garden." In the United States we'd be horrified if somebody came and dug up our yard. God forbid you tell us "Yeah, there's an Indian burial ground directly under your house." D8
I've actually had to tell a a couple precisely that in California. They had a nice house, but the woman's grandfather had built another farther back on a "mound." During WWII he started hand excavating a cellar under it, then suddenly quit and moved to the present location and built another house. The older structure had a beautiful cobble fire place and the couple wanted to subdivide and complete the older structure. I went down into the open cellar of the older structure and came back and explained that apparently the reason granddad had moved to a new location was that he had run into human interments digging the cellar. The short of it was that without a lot of consultation (tribal, county, state) they were unlikely to get the work permitted.
@@Padraigan13 No they didn’t rehearse scenes. And it is a very smart strategy to film it while asking such a question. People have a hard time saying no on camera. In any case, the village and surrounding area would know in advance that Time Team was going to be filming, so the camera crew at her door didn’t come entirely as a surprise.
I was just thinking as I watched them demolish that stone "shed" with the slate roof that if this were done in South Carolina where I live they would be on the receiving end of some condemnation!
Sorry to be a little pedantic @35:00, but if the stylistic argument is only based on the edge of the lintel, doesn't that just suggest that they changed the edge of it in the 16th century? That seems a reasonable thing to happen, and suggests the two standpoints don't necessarily exclude eachother...

When Carenza was showing the lady the footprint of the trench she wants to put in her front yard, the building directly behind her looks like an existing building from the 1750’s map.
Not found of humans but they are busy and interesting. 700 years not much in the grand geologic history they come into an area dig in the earth , smelt metal, glass, clay pots. Eat, poop, make more humans fight make up build tear down build on top, with increasing beauty and charm then tear down, rebuild with far less charm but more affordable for peasants, over and over again…………. Post & beam, mortise and tenon my favorite, ceilings wonderful.
Saint Boudreau. I, too, am a misanthrope, but I seldom get excited about architecture; I reserve my excitement and caring for non human species; who may or may not build, but who create beauty by being.

Brits use garden where Americans would say yard (practically no matter what's in it, be that plants or not) for the bit of land immediately surrounding a house. Big fancy or landscaped gardens around castles or manor houses can be called parks, even if they're not public.
One thing that'll be infinitely funny to me forever is how much do British (and American to some extend) people care about grass :-D like there's nothing in the garden and they all give a massive shit about the grass being disturbed, like here in Europe people would only care if they were actually growing something on that spot :-D
Having a furious argument in a polite way is such a wonderful skill - and there are not so many people around who possess it.

I love how Mick would end sentences with “look”, when he wants someone to notice something archaeological. (12:18) He does it in a lot of episodes.

Keith might have been in one other. Beric’s big one was the episode at Hylton Castle in Sunderland. He did ten episodes overall, I believe.

Besides the heating problem, maybe the later structure would be compromised. I think it would be hellishly expensive to restore it to the original. But certainly, I would love to build a new structure with those timber frames and perhaps use modern technology to ensure heating was adequate. I am not sure how fragile those timbers are but I would certainly investigate the possibility of opening up that area and making it a feature in the house. Perhaps a private retreat or maybe a room which could in the summer be used as a focal room to gather a few friends for meetings and maybe having a light buffet meal or even a tea party. enjoy a step back into the past. The sort of area that poetry and legends thrive. A wonderful oak floor, scattered thick rugs and a few leather divans and horse hair armchairs should do the trick.
I can't help it!!! Poetry readings, discussing and reading Gothic novels, embroidery, historical information. This would bore some people immensely, but I would love it.

This is a classic episode - No flash, interesting excentriic experts like Robin Bush, Berwick and Kieth -great dialogue between respected intellectauls. It shows how much the commercial interference had eroded the heart and core of the program by the last series.

Im glad they finally showed the wall inside the old window. Was really curious about that. But wanted to see more on it. That space hasn't seen daylight in centuries.

It's amazing to me that they can just go up to people's houses and say, "Say, can we dig up your yard?" and people are perfectly agreeable or even excited. I guess in England there's a certain prestige to say, "Yes, there's a 15 century town house in my front garden." In the United States we'd be horrified if somebody came and dug up our yard. God forbid you tell us "Yeah, there's an Indian burial ground directly under your house." D8
I've actually had to tell a a couple precisely that in California. They had a nice house, but the woman's grandfather had built another farther back on a "mound." During WWII he started hand excavating a cellar under it, then suddenly quit and moved to the present location and built another house. The older structure had a beautiful cobble fire place and the couple wanted to subdivide and complete the older structure. I went down into the open cellar of the older structure and came back and explained that apparently the reason granddad had moved to a new location was that he had run into human interments digging the cellar. The short of it was that without a lot of consultation (tribal, county, state) they were unlikely to get the work permitted.
I am sure it is all rehearsed before the actual filming of the episodes.

No they didn’t rehearse scenes. And it is a very smart strategy to film it while asking such a question. People have a hard time saying no on camera. In any case, the village and surrounding area would know in advance that Time Team was going to be filming, so the camera crew at her door didn’t come entirely as a surprise.
I wonder if they ever got permission to put in the wanted extension? This was a hugely entertaining and informative episode.

What's the difference between a lawn and a garden in England?
A lawn is kept neat for decor purposes while a garden is where you would typically put plants in and various other things.
Bryon Lape A lawn is a part of a garden. The lawn is an area of grass *in* a garden.
Brits use garden where Americans would say yard (practically no matter what's in it, be that plants or not) for the bit of land immediately surrounding a house. Big fancy or landscaped gardens around castles or manor houses can be called parks, even if they're not public.
