I miss being able to drive "too close to the lake" on the old highway. The problem wasn't that the road was "too close to the lake," it was that drivers are in too much of a hurry to slow down and enjoy the view, so they prefer driving in a tunnel as though it's a race track.
Yes it was close to the lake and many feet up. I bicycled on that old highway that was very narrow with guardrails that had often been run into and you heading north you could look straight down into the lake. It was quite scary when a logging truck went by you with no room to spare... either get squashed by the truck or plummet into Gitchi Gummi. It is very nice they finally made the old road a paved bike/hiking trail (many of us advocated for that but it took a while...).
hard to believe it was 30 years ago. driving around the cliff was so jarring an experience that the memory still feels fresh
I went to school at UMD during the construction. Was very cool to drive through it when it was new.

You can still walk the trail. The road was falling into the lake.
