I live in the front range of Colorado and fish cheeseman canyon weekly. The most underrated fly on that river is a size 10 yellow/black pats rubber legs with a TB 3mm-4.5mm with the wire wraps. Big canyon catcher.

Nice! Yeah I hear they have some good hatches there. Lots of stoneflies

Yeah it could be for sure! Adding a few joints on the back though might really help with that

trout seem to go crazy for barred legs. The Pats I tie with barred legs seem to hit more often.

Do we really need to tie any other flies? This pattern is so effective that we don’t. Our tying obsession says differently though! PRL is my go to when getting skunked is a possibility!

It is a great pattern no doubt. However it does depend on what rivers your fishing. Some rivers don’t have large stoneflies. For instance the San Juan river. This flu would not work too well there. Maybe you can catch some, but the go to patterns there are small red annelids and midge flies. That’s 95% of the food sources in the river for those trout. Also some people (me included) also fly fish for bass and saltwater fish. There you need crayfish, baitfish, crab or shrimp flies to catch. Occasionally you can catch bass with nymphs but more often than not, the larger ones won’t move for smaller meals.

What do you catch with this fly? I’ve seen it around but I am not sure if it’s for trout and what it imitates.

Mimics a stonefly or large aquatic bug nymph. Yes usually for trout in rivers. Can catch sunfish and bass also if they are custom to eating aquatic bugs
