24 years ago when my mother was in a rehab facility (aka nursing home), I would bring my two Irish Setters in to visit her, which she loved. But it was time consuming as the patients who liked to hang out in the lobby & hallways became suddenly animated and talkative, often reminiscing about their own past dogs. It was amazing to see them come to life, and my dogs enjoyed the attention, too. Bring Nessa with you as frequently as possible!

If you put mulch on top of weed fabric it will eventually decompose, turn to dirt and you'll have weeds growing on top of the fabric. Use cardboard after pulling, plant thru the cardboard...no weed fabric and then mulch 3" at least. Works great.

Rocks don’t work either. We put weed barrier and rocks and within a cpl years the debris that lands on top of the rocks just makes fodder for weeds to grow. Plus it makes it difficult to plant new things into the bed. Just do deep mulch. Mulching every year is better than rocks.

Our daughter got married in our yard and all of my friends brought over any outdoor potted plants that they had. We used them as decor in the outdoor area where the wedding was being held. They brought them the day before and retrieved them the day after. It was easiest to have them bring and take home because then they could identify their own plants. Also buckets full of ice water!!! Buy at least 5-6 water bottles per person, when it’s hot out people drink a lot. The other thing is out houses, if you’re having more than 50 people.

We had a 3700 square foot house built back in 2005 when we unexpectedly had 3 more children join our family of 4. We loved the look and feel of the cathedral ceilings but #1 they are a huge energy waster, and #2 we needed to utilize every square foot for bedrooms and bathrooms. The ceiling area above the family room was changed to be a huge bedroom with a full attached bathroom for my 2 nieces. It ended up being a 5 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath house with a living room, dining room, greatroom /kitchen with a walk in pantry and a full unfinished basement. Man, I loved that house !! We are empty nesters now, in a much smaller house.😊
Best of luck Sarah, Solo and family !

Consider putting landscape fabric on that ground before you cover with rocks. Weeds and grass will find the smallest crack and make their way up. Very resilient little buggers lol..We removed all the mulch as several fires here with mulch an issue being too close. Fire code here states no mulch within 18 inches of building.

@@kayeray6801 To prepare a substantial amount of weed killer, mix together a gallon of white vinegar, a cup of salt and a 2 tablespoons of dishliquid( I use dawn but any will do…it is just so the salt/vinegar solution adheres to the grass/weeds/leaves.) Stir well and transfer to a spray bottle for convenient application. Store the rest indoors for future use. Do not apply if it is going to rain within 48 hours. secondhand woolen carpet is what you need to stop the weeds - normally free from the carpet store so they don't have to pay to throw it away - woolen carpet is a natural fibre, and stops the weeds on it own or with rocks or stones on top for years - put it bottom up were the sack side is showing - just cut it to size - also great if you are planting a row of rasberries, blue berrries or apple trees etc and put mulch on top to hold in the water so less watering

Pretty bad on the farmers here and one of the bigger islands had to get aid from mainland Australia. The big river in front of my house was soooo low you could see the muddy bottom. Now it’s been raining straight for 2 weeks. Full up river. Pond will eventually rise when the rains come. Then go down again when they don’t.

I only have an acre and a half, but as a single mom it’s plenty to keep up and my nine year old is the only one who loves to garden with me. It’s been up to 118 here so we’re a little behind and will catch up when it cools. I grow mostly vegetables, fruit and flowers. I love pulling weeds but am a big fan of landscape fabric. The area you’re cleaning would be the perfect kitchen garden, so close to the house. Oh the possibilities for the “next” person who loves to garden. 😊

If you are on city water I would recommend having a water well drilled for you to add water to your pond as needed. If you already have well water and it is not convenient to run a hose to the pond you might think about another water well being drilled closer to the new house/pond. The additional well water might help with your home pool water as well. God bless all of you with a speedy house finishing and beautiful wedding(s)! PS: I want to add that you will need a VERY sturdy, well built water well pump for the pond/pool, otherwise the motor could burn out with heavy use.

Your Grandma is such a sweet blessing. I love that your Mom gets to spend lots of time with her Mother.
I am not a big fan of weeding now. I use to but I am disabled now and can't.

We had a man-made pond using rain water runoff and had to periodically dig it out to get rid of sediment that accumulates over time. It would be sad to lose this one, such an important landscape feature. ❤

Yes, I have three of those sticks from Dollar Tree with little rakes and brooms. I love them, have had them about 4 years and none have broken. You must have gotten a bad one - sorry!
So sweet to still have your grandmother around. I still miss mine from many years ago - never had a gr.grandmother like your children have the privilege.

I agree with your mom on pulling weeds! My mom had an acre garden, and my stepdad worked third shift, I would weed the garden and get paid in chocolate!! Best pay ever! House is looking amazing! ❤

I am on the tail end of our own kitchen remodel and several of your comments about how it feels wanting to move in to your new cabinets have been my feelings this week too! It is so surreal to be at this stage. So excited for you guys!!
Also, trying to homeschool in the middle of this has been crazy for us too. 🤪

Rocks in the flower beds will not be as low maintenance as you hope. So many weed seeds blowing around in country homes. So many weeds grow in the rocks and its such a pain to pull them out. Perennials that get bigger every year are a much better bet speaking from my experience. Its so much easier to pull weeds out of dirt than rocks.

Sarah I only have half the little people you do (6) but I totally resonate with the flower bed situation- definitely not a priority in this season of life- maybe not ever? It really motivated me to keep up with the beds better to plant FOOD in them. So mixed we have a few perennials (hydrangeas, roses, salvia, sedum) every other with foodstuff - the rocks will be great but don’t be afraid to mix something utilitarian into landscaping the new house- hugely motivating to weed blueberries, aronia berries and herbs over some flower 🌸

Gosh the house is coming along nicely. Hope that the pond doesn't dry up as wouldn't be to cool. So much fun going to Grandma's and the treat the kids got. Enjoyed and thanks.
