Finally, a REAL Beginner video with REAL basic beginner info. Thank You!
Shane…thank you for making this chording video for Open G!
What a great lesson for a stone cold begging. Thanks Shane
THE best tutorial on playing simple songs on yer CBGs that I have probably ever seen! Thank you, brother Shane, for all you do for the Community. I own your book, too, and that is also awesome. A large portion, YES!!! :-D
Thanks Shane. I use small vinyl letters to mark the notes on the side. They can easily be peeled off when you no longer need them.
Thank you I'm old but trying to get this down
Most helpful lesson I've come across in over a year!
What a great video, I'm another old guy who is learning. This is giving me more incentive and making it easier. Thank you. 👙
As a complete beginner *thank you SO much*! I know I'm mixing musical styles, but after watching this I Googled and found the chord sheets for my favourite movie - 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou'! I'm so happy
Great tip for a complete beginner like me
Thank you Shane!
I recently had great fun building my first CBG but struggled to find absolute beginner lessons that I can actually learn reasonably quickly. This method is so simple yet effective that I'm picking it up straight away ! One new subscriber !
Many thanks! I'm a very old fellow. And I've tried all my life to play a guitar -- unsuccessfully. But NOW, FINALLY, a fellow that speaks what my old ears can hear. If ANYTHING can help me, THIS WILL. A million thanks.
Great lesson for a beginner like myself! 👍 Thank you.
Excellent Beginner's Lesson. Thank You.
Fantastic! Thanks so much!
Good advise keep it simple. you can get fancy later!
Also super helpful, thanks man!
Nice. Got regular guitar and I'm going to try this on that.
Nicely done thanks man
Awesome and thanks 🤩
Always entertaining and educational .🤘🏼
Too too good! Thank you!
Shane, That was awesome, Would it not be great if music teachers in our schools showed this sort thing to the student population just to instil a real interest in music, who knows where it might take them all!
I see what you're saing. For me, the song always comes first. There's a million ways to get there, but you gotta have the goal of the song (and the LOVE of a song)!
Great stuff, thx mate!
Such a good idea! I had considered burning the chords onto the neck, but didn't want to be stuck with them forever and bugger up the instruments appearance.
Terrific... Exactly what I needed. Thanks
I am tuned DAD but this idea still works
Great video and idea Shane, you're a legend.
Awesome video thanks Shane speil
Real Nice - thanks!
Extremely helpful as a beginner lesson. Thank you! Bill
You are just a blessing thankful for you please keep it up
I love this! So helpful...
Fantastic. Such a helpful tip. Cheers 👍🇦🇺
Thanks for the video 😎
I'm going to make one now thanks
Heavens I love this!!👍👍
Thank you for this - you are a legend !
Thanks, I am very new to any guitar type, but I am not up for being a guitar player. I just want to have fun with a 3 string cigar box guitar. You do a great job teaching for beginners.
Thanks for making it easy, your good teacher,.
Great idea! You are the King!
Wow, thanks!
Since power chords only have two notes, not three, they can be used for both major and minor chords. The tuning of the CBG uses a high G, a D, and a low G. Adding a third note can make them fully major or minor.
Brilliant thank you 😉🎸🎶🔥
Thanks Shane
Thanks for the wonderful lesson! Looks like CBG is easier to play than ordinary guitars. Twisting fingers isn´t my thing at all. The neck of CBG is way slimmer and chords being so easy to find, I think I will give it a go.
Picked up one of these from you yesterday. Been following your channel for a couple of years atleast. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Good video - useful lesson. Thanks!
My pleasure!!!
Shane, how about a quick tutorial on how to strum/count time? I just need something bone simple to get me started. Looking on the net thing's get complicated in very short order. It can't be that hard, millions of guitarists have figured it out but for some reason I just keep getting a mental block.
Great video 👍
Greatest
Simply genius! Was gonna write directly on the neck- you saved me! Now, just gotta figure out where the frets would go on the fretless slider...lol
Use this: www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator
This is such a good video, now I only hope that I will find the time to build a Cigar box guitar so that I can put this into practice 😁 🎸
Hello Shane, I am new to playing guitar but am starting on a CBG. I have watched you and other people play and try to teach. You are the best hands down. Please do us older fans and Savoy Brown fans a big favor. Please teach the slide and main rhythm to their classic 60,s song "Tell Mama. Other guys are tearing it up on UA-cam. Sounds awful..Wrong key and so forth. Thanks brother!!
Great
I love you buddy. In a kind of beer drinking cigar box playing way. Heeee Heeee
Will this same exact principle work on my tenor ukulele?
I just tuned 3 strings to open G, G-D-G on my ukulele and am gonna cut the 4th string. I love the sound already. 😊💪👊
This was super helpful!
Sometimes the easiest ideas are the vest solutions!
@@ShaneSpeal Absolutely! I’m still finding some songs don’t seem to translate well to the open G tuning if you’re only playing power chords which is a bummer :(
Heading south by Zach Lane Bryan starts with Am F C and it’s a little all over the place on the cgb without playing chords
@@confettihunterminus1 Heh...yeah, some songs are just full of chords and make it tough to maneuver the slide everywhere. Might wanna slow the tempo down. BTW, the Am in Zach's song can simply be played over the "A" marker. You don't need to worry about minor or major with this technique.
Always love to see your lessons. Just a heads up for some reason UA-cam is redirecting the link for your t-shirts in the description to a site called cigar box guitar emporium. I clicked on it a few times and got sent there. It looks like a competitor's website.
I do this at markets for people who say they cant play guitar. Often a sale.
Good
This song is the same tune as “when the worlds on fire” by the Carter Family which Guthrie used
Too cool. Thanks man. It must get really crazy when you throw on a capo. 😐
❤❤
Hey Shane .. do you think the slide kind of CBG is the easiest to play and build?! I did a bunch of CBGs but not many of them sounded good.. The one you're playing it seems to me a good one for a beginner.. What is the string height action like in this one? I mean the best action possible to play like you're doing a slide guitar with sharpie frets what's the ratio of the action. I will build a new neck like yours .. straight with no scarf joint but with a good placed zero fret and down pull of the string with a similar regulator like you did just before the zero fret .. Thank you if you will reply to me.. Take care from italy .. i showed to you my CBGs in my google photos album ..if you can recall ... Hi Buddy it's always a pleasure ..
Thsi was a Geat lesson... I have a question, is a Song has a Minor Chord too, do you just play as you've explaned in this lesson or made a change??
Oh.. tape.. eh well these will be on the guitar for a while eh heh...
So if I use open e tuning to find the correct chord just count up five steps like a A chord would be E
I think it might be because you have "cigarboxguitars" plural in the link.
doh! fixing it! Thank you
No problem.
Hi Shane I've just started to learn and I'm struggling to find a stubby that fits I've not got big/small fingers just inbetween
If you have a socket set in the house, try several sockets to see if one of them fits! Always a great choice to begin with.
My favorite song is Eruption by Van Halen. I doubt your method can do that.
Can you put fret wire on this
Would you mind if i use your teachings in makeing my cbg ?
Everything I post is free game. Take what you need and use it!
But what is the second chord listed supposed to be for?
4 string tutorial like this?
I built a three string guitar without frets. Where do I place the names
Shane, thank you for this GOOD video. I say good because I have watched A LOT of 'beginner CBG videos' and I have issue with most of them...including yours. This is what I mean...anybody posting a 'beginner CBG video' can SAY their CBG is tuned to "G", but most don't really explain what that means, they pluck the strings and say G-D-G....so what. they take for granted viewers know what strings they should use to make that happen. In reality, they don't. So, what string gauge do you use to obtain a "G" tuning? What 3 strings from a 'regular guitar would make this happen? If you take the 3 bottom strings you couldn't tune them to G_D_G, could you? Would you break strings???? (this should be a YOU TUBE REQUIREMENT for 'beginner CBG videos' of this sort.) See what I mean???? So, that is my 2 cents worth. Just an observation... Thanks again. The videos you share are worthwhile and I hope you are able to continue to share them with your fans!!! Stay healthy. Peace out!!
GDG can be accomplished by using ADG strings from a full six string pack...or just get a pack of Shane Strings at www.CBGitty.com/shane
Get a chromatic tuner app, one that will let you see the actual Hz. Low G is 98 Hz, D is 146.8 or 147 Hz (147 works just fine), and High G is 196 Hz. It took me some digging to figure it out at first.
what is the scale length
Hi, a real newby here, does the chord chart change if in a different tuning?
Yes
@@ShaneSpeal thank you very much, any chance of a video of other tunings? Open E etc?
@@paulzimmerman1212 Search through my channel. There's TONS of other tunings. :)
🎶🏁🍀💚🍀
Need to tell you you own stubby new people coming in don't know
Ditto Merle
Cool trick for us Oregon hillbillies. 😆
Be honest people these things are fairly boring sounding. And the chords are like ballpark chords. I liked some of the videos that I heard on here so I bought one. M e h.
Hi Shane, great job. would you mind if I copied this vid to my Facbook page ?
