    This episode was so packed... one of the things that "Struck" me was Joel, calm and focused in the hospital, on save Ellie mode... not beast mode, not rage just save Ellie... the music that played in that scene; I was in tears. and hello, Ashley as Ellie's mom... OMG... They tied this season up and the lies a parent will tell to save their child... Loved your reaction - so fun watching with you two. Joel being chatty and Ellie shut down... God... How they say 'I love you' without uttering the words... I see a few awards for this show and the actors. Real giraffe...

    Ellie should have been given a choice. The fact that Joel took her that entire way, and the FIreflies treated him like crap when he asked to see her. The way I understood what Marlene said, was that there was a "chance" at getting a cure. They could have messed up in surgery, killed Ellie, and lost the cure option. And even if they were successful in getting a cure, how were they going to manufacture enough of it to cure the entire broken world? Let's also not forget that the Fireflies and Fedra were fighting for a long time. I don't think the world could have been saved anyway. So there was no point in killing Ellie for the "chance". Just my opinion. I loved every episode of this series. It is one of the best I have ever seen.

      @@LovedByYou When Joel wakes up in the hospital, Marlene tells him that they owe him. Joel wants to see Ellie. Marlene tells him he can't. A soldier hits him in the stomach with the end of his gun. Marlene hands her soldiers part of Joel's gear and the knife and orders them to take him out of the hospital. If he tries anything, she orders them to shoot him. So she's so greatful that she is going to give Joel a knife and send him on his way into a world that is barely survivable. Marlene even said she barely made it to the hospital alive herself. She is sending him to his death by not properly equipping him. On the way out of the hospital, the 2 Firefly soldiers talk a bunch of crap to Joel and push him around. They treated him like a piece of dirt. And if Ellie was given the choice to die for the world, she would have wanted to say goodbye to Joel. Ellie wouldn't have wanted him to be treated the way he was.

  • @Pandaemoni
    @Pandaemoni Рік тому +3

    Neil Druckman, the principal creator of the story, said the choice was intended to be between sacrificing a beloved child, on the one hand, and dooming humanity, on the other. So the writer's intent was that the cure was a realistic possibility. In reality, in our world, medical science isn't that cut and dried (but we also live in a world without fungus-human-hybrid zombies, so the fictional world is different). The intent was that the audience struggle with the problem of whether you can sacrifice one life to save a multitude. At the same time, in Episode 2, when the mycologist recommended bombing Jakarta (and Tess later sais they bombed Boston to slow the spread), that was presented as surprising, but not presented as a wildly unethical idea...and Jakarta had a population of about 8.5 million people circa 2003. That sacrifice of innocent people to save even more lives elsewhere seemed more logical, more justified...even though there had to be, let's say, two million innocent children in the city. The big difference being, all those children were faceless, nameless strangers, and we got to know Ellie. It suggests that the urge to save Ellie, is perhaps more of an emotional reaction rather than a logical one (or perhaps that the decision in Jakarka was cold and unfeeling, and the decision to save Ellie more human).

Who knows if this "cure " would even work, but I still think Ellie should've been given the choice. I'm with Joel, and I would've done the same thing. Especially because Marlene doesn't know that the umbilical cord was cut AFTER the bite, that's apparently the key to Ellie's immunity, hmmm.....don't know how feel about that, but I'd do the same thing Joel did.

    I knew a few tidbits from the first game, such as Sarah's death occurring on the night of the outbreak and that the story centred around Joel guiding Ellie across country and forming a father-daughter type bond along the way, I haven't actually played the games, however, so this series has been quite the journey.
    Ellie's birth scene was amazing... and tragic... and scary... and beautiful... and really interesting as the likely source of her immunity. What a devastating thing for Marlene though. They certainly were very different people, but like Joel, Marlene was someone hardened by this world. They also both made the same mistake at the end, taking the decision away from Ellie.
    I love that following the flashback they then opened up with Ellie's trauma and the change in her personality, hard as it was to see. It is realistic, though, as the experiences she has had over the previous months would undoubtedly damage a person. Especially a teenager, their hormone riddled bodies and brains being generally ill equipped to deal with their emotions as it is, haha..... we've all been there.
    Some of the conversations in this episode were so well crafted. The one where Joel tells Ellie they can still turn around, go live a quiet life back at Tommy's, and she responds that they have to go all the way with their mission perfectly foreshadows Joel's conflict later in the episode. He knows Ellie would probably choose to die for a shot at saving humanity, but he just can't stand to lose her.
    I also loved the conversation where Joel discusses trying to kill himself. It was the most honest and vulnerable Joel has been with her throughout. I think he realised she was needing that from him, but it was also something he simply wanted to give to her to show just how much she had come to mean to him. He was expressing to her that as dark and painful as it may get at times, you will find the light and the beauty again. You will find yourself again. That of course culminated in the moment where he indicates to Ellie that it was she that had healed him from the wound that was the loss of Sarah, she who had led him back to the light, the beauty, and to himself again - such a touching moment. Seeing Joel come from being this person who was extremely closed-off and bitter for 20yrs to this moment of open vulnerability and hope was such a great representation of that healing and how far their relationship had come.
    The sound design on the hospital rescue scene (where Joel rescues Ellie from the surgeon's knife) was amazing. The music was dominant, with the sounds of gunshots, spent shells pinging on the floor, and the occasional agonised scream heard underneath it. That, and the music itself, created a great deal of tension and left a sombre sense in the air. This was no moment of triumph or joy and I think we got that same sombre sense from Joel in the car afterwards. Sure he saved Ellie, but he again had to kill to do it and he also understands that he may have just resigned humanity to eventual extinction. You can see in that moment that he's hugely conflicted and he knows that he acted somewhat selfishly, but he so desperately wanted Ellie to have the chance at a full and decent life that Sarah never got. He also knows that Marlene was probably right when she said that Ellie would give her life for a cure. Afterall, that's why he lies to her, right? Because she would have chosen to sacrifice herself and would be pissed that he did what he did. Despite this, despite knowing that Ellie would probably choose the surgery, he still couldn't bring himself to let her go. Whilst we can all make the argument for why Joel should have acted for the greater good, I think we can all understand why he didn't also, so it's super hard to be highly critical of him. I think it's this that makes this ending such a compelling one. Ultimately, however, as I said above this should have been Ellie's decision to make and both Joel and Marlene took it from her. They should have fully informed her and then supported her in making her decision in her own time and free from pressure or coercion.
    Joel and Ellie's final conversation was again brilliantly crafted. In opening up about Riley I think Ellie was essentially saying to Joel, "Hey, this is my deepest, most painful secret and I'm about to be totally honest with you about it, so I expect you to be the same when I ask you about what happened back at the hospital." She obviously has her doubts about Joel's story, but I think she so desperately wants it to be true, so desperately wants to have not been betrayed by the one person she trusts and loves in this world, that she's willing herself to accept it. Deep down, however, I think there's a part of her that knows he's lying. Please, no spoilers, but I can't help thinking that Joel's lie is going to come back to bite him in the second game/season. Through all this trauma and adversity they've slowly built a loving relationship on a foundation of openness and trust. This fact was really highlighted by the conversations they shared throughout this episode, so I suspect that trust will be broken when Ellie learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and that she still might hold the potential for a cure. Though it pains me to say, I think this will likely be a major source of conflict between the two next season.
    Anyway, this first season has been great. The writing, the music, the casting, the directing, the cinematography, the acting, etc, etc, etc has all been top notch. Special mention of course for Bella and Pedro, they've carried this story brilliantly.
    Thanks for your reactions, let's do it all again come season two.

    Marlene sacrificed Ellie just as she had sacrificed troops over 2 decades. She was disposable--as demonstrated by her giving away her friend's knife to Joel. Joel represents family--just as seen with Henry and Sam. Sacrifice all for the one. Joel has idealized Ellie and their relationship---keep in mind they have not been together for even a year. She has never lived with a family. She has never had a daughter/parent relationship. Plus, both of them are so profoundly traumatized.

    There’s no “right” answer…..it’s all about perspective. That’s what makes the game and the show so great.
    That being said, even if the Fireflies did successfully make a vaccine, it’s too late to save the world because there’s no global infrastructure anymore. The only people that would get the vaccine would be other Fireflies or they’d use it to get people to join them. They would never give it to FEDRA members or any citizens in the QZ who supported them. The vaccine would just be another tool to help them win their war.

      @flochforster6892 Рік тому +2

      Exactly my thoughts. The world was far too gone. Even if there was a cure it would never stop people from being awful to each other. The remaining population already accepted that fact. A potential cure wouldn’t do much. We never hear about how much of the world was killed but it’s at least over 80%. There’s just no way humanity would be able to rebuild. If they did it would take well over 100 years or even longer. The Fireflies would’ve safeguarded the cure so they could remain in power while FEDRA continues to fight. The cure would just cause more violence and chaos.

      @@andyd3447 If you see it that way, you're quite literally throwing any depth and complexity of this ending out of the window. This season and the first game is quite literally about Joel and Ellie's journey - not the one that leads them to the fireflies, but the one that turns them into father and adopted daughter. Ellie stopped being cargo to Joel long before he finally admitted, but that babygirl scene is supposed to be confirmation of it: the creators of the game confirmed this is how he would call his kids. Sarah, and then Ellie. They don't need to call each other "dad" and "daughter" for the viewer to understand this. That's why it's supposed to be so ethically challenging and why Neil spoke to parents when asking their opinions about the finale

      @andyd3447 Рік тому

      @@blurrylinesx8039 Joel's emotional baggage wasn't Marlene or anyone else's problem. He stopped a vaccine from being created that would have saved the entire world. When Ellie finds out in the second game she is devastated and tells him that he ruined her chance to make a difference and that now her life means nothing. He was SELFISH plain and simple.

    • @blurrylinesx8039
      @blurrylinesx8039 Рік тому +1

      @Andy D when Ellie finds out in the second game, she's also no longer 14 years old and has spent years living a good life in Jackson, thus making her actually apt to choose. As a traumatized kid, she was not. It's very simple actually, and it's why guardians and parents are the ones to authorize when a child needs invasive or risky procedures like surgery that could result in death. It's why relationships between a 16 year old and 26 year old will always creep people out, no matter how much the teen might "consent to it". It's why age of consent exists in the first place.Their brains simply don't process stuff the way an adult's one does. Plus, she was never given a choice either way and a "third option" of what would've been, so of course she will always fault Joel as long as she's breathing and ALIVE. There is no "um, I wonder if Ellie would be happy if Joel had left her there to save humanity" because she would've been dead. Marlene took her the choice and Joel kept it that way. So the only way she gets to marinate on this alive is knowing that to save her from getting killed unbeknownst to her, Joel had to kill dozens of people. That's the only way she'll ever see it. But it doesn't matter if her answer would've changed from when she was 14 or remained the same. She simply wasn't the one to make that call because that is a child.

    The classic Trolley Problem. Marlene makes her decision as a leader to save as many as she can save. Joel makes his decision as a father to save the one he loves. Either way, both took Ellie's agency away even though she probably would have chosen to go through with the surgery. Ellie was keeping a ledger of people she lost along the way. She wanted all those deaths and all the good and terrible things that happened to her to mean something. Joel knows this, and it's probably why he lies to her. Ellie knows Joel well by now; she already knows he's lying about what really happened. This lie will poison their relationship. Should Ellie learn the truth, I don't think she will forgive him for it.

    I don't think putting the choice to Ellie actually solves anything. There's a reason we don't let 14 year olds make life and death decisions or sign contracts - they aren’t experienced enough nor do they have the emotional maturity to fully understand the consequences of those decisions. Ellie is more mature than the average, but she is not in a place to be making life or death decisions for herself. She’s traumatized and depressed, and blames herself for all the deaths that have taken place around her. She would be in no fit state to make such a decision even if she were an adult. At this point, Joel is the closest thing she has to a guardian so yes, it was his decision to make.
    Lying to her afterwords? That's a whole other question.

    I've read other comments about people saying that this was the moment that Joel became a villain, but I think of him as an anti-hero and he has the traits
    They tend to make selfish decisions and don't care about the consequences
    They may be fighting for what they believe is a noble cause, but their methods are often questionable
    They rebel against authority figures and society
    They're self-destructive or anti-social
    They have a cynical outlook on the world around them
    They have a troubled past that haunts them
    And as a father, I would have made the same decision. It's ironic that Marlene told him that It wasn't his choice to make when they never gave Ellie the choice, even though I believe she would have said yes. I started watching the series with no knowledge of what happened in the game. I don't know anyone who plays it so there was no source material for me to even know about and I'm glad. I've enjoyed it since episode 1. It was a great season and I want to say from a walking dead fan, this surpass the walking Dead

    I don't think the fireflies ever intended giving Ellie a choice. Which is why they didn't tell her. If they did and she refused they would have drugged her and done it anyway because nothing else mattered to them. This whole thing though didn't sit right with me. How did the Dr. come to that conclusion without fully examining Ellie? Who was he? Was this his expertise? And why do you need the whole brain? You only need a small piece of tissue to make millions of copies of cells. You couldn't get it through brain or spinal fluid? I don't think the doctor knew what he was getting into so that's why he just wanted to kill her and take it all. Lol!

    As I have had time to think about it, I think the writers knew all of us who work in research would be yelling at the tv, "You don't have to kill her! This makes no sense!" I'm wondering if this was the point of it all. Imagine if Eugene would have continued with the deception and they had gotten him all the way to D.C to a NIH lab. What would he have done? He seemed smart enough. Everyone would've taken his word for it. And if he'd never come up with a cure, "Oh well that's science.' Lol!

    Great reaction. I wish you had included the part where Ellie says” I get it, time heals all wounds.” And Joel says “ It wasn’t time. “ The look on Ellie’s face as she slowly digests this is perfection. She may be the cure for all humanity but for Joel, she is the personal healing he has needed since he lost his daughter. He loves her and he is not going to let her go now that he’s finally found peace again.

    Amazing show , only nitpick I have is that they ignored and left out ALOT of great “infected” scenes. There really wasn’t much infected at all. I wanted more in that department along with more of the world or apocalypse itself. Idk it felt pretty rushed but that’s prolly only cuz I’ve played the game I suppose and didn’t go in clueless. Regardless - solid 8/10

    Marlene's big fuck-up in the series was to not give Ellie a choice. We know that Ellie would have chosen to sacrifice herself and she would have been the ONLY one who could have talked Joel into letting her go.
    After that, there would have been only one person Joel would have been a danger to, himself. I don't think he could have lost a daughter twice and kept going.

      Facts, but the way the fireflies were handling their one and only immune patient in 20 years made me severely doubt their aptitude to the task to be honest lol. Killing your only immune specimen on the very day you get access to them without exhausting all the alternatives first like blood, bone marrow, tissue and etc just seems like an incredibly stupid way to fuck up your one chance at getting anywhere near a vaccine. Not that it mattered to Joel's decision at all because he didn't gave a damn about the world, but still
