Not so nice to give advice that will screw up the tracks of your garage door.
@@richardlinares6314 This dude is a pro and has done it hundreds of times. I myself was able to repair my garage door, thanks to this content. And guess what? The tracks on my garage door were fine. Tight enough to stop the door from coming down is nowhere near enough to 'screw up the tracks'. He says to put a vice grip on BOTH sides of the door so the weight is distributed, which again, means that you don't have to be clamped down all that hard.
I love when these professional companies post a videos and don't answer any questions about the content.
They are not after helping anyone else but themselves with views and advertising.
Thanks, Jacob. Having watched your video, I realize this may be a bit more challenging than I thought. Very helpful.
I DIDN'T NEED COME-A-LONG AT ALL? I just replaced a bent panel that was the second on from the bottom. Below are the steps I did and I thought it was super easy:)
1) Put vise grips on bottom rollers.
2) Took bolts connecting broken panel from the above 3rd panel up.
3) Pulled cord to release garage door and pushed the two upper panels all the way up.
4) Unbolted the 2nd panel from the bottom panel and took broken panel off.
5) Bolted on New panel to bottom panel
6) Lower down upper two panels and attached bolts from new panel to 3rd panel and done:)
and you did this with a 16 foot wide door?
yeah, I've got to replace my 2nd panel also, and was planning on doing it exactly like that, but thought I'd go to UA-cam university just to make sure I'm doing it right. Saw Mr "Hide and go seek" here with his comealong, and made me wonder what the heck he's doing? Still no clue - how do you jack up a comealong, but the item goes down?
Nice when you are standing in front of what you are doing.
EXACTLY
That is why so many people have replayed that portion of the video. Someone should have "proof" viewed this video before posting and they would have recognized this ahead. Too late now; and, people are commenting negatively on this video for the same reason over and over. It could have been prevented.
Ya, camera should have been brought into attaching that 'come-along'.
Thanks for the video. Now I at least know the process involved. Will have a pro do mine.
thanks for the video. it's helpful. without the come along tool, it would just take me longer but what i would do is take out all the spring tension and just remove the panels from top to bottom until i reach the panel that needs replacement. longer process but then i don't need that special tool that i would use once in 20 years (when i ruin the panel because one cable snaps and bends the panel).
Good point. The easiest way to remove the tension from the spring is to pull the disconnect cord while the garage is all the way open. You prob need someone to help you lower it because the door is very heavy when lowering it manually. Then disconnect the panels you want to remove, manually lift the panels above it, placing vice grips or screwdrivers to prevent the upper levels from heading back down.
I was thinking the same thing, just remove the tension spring. Although you do need a "special tool" to tighten the spring back up. By the way the special tool to tighten the spring is just 2 round bars
I would like to ry it..I need to remove the second panel from the top. Do I need to remove spring tension if I am not removing the bottom panel that is connected by cables to the spring?
@@viajerozz i'm not an expert like the person in this video so take what i say with that in mind. yes, u need to remove the spring tension when working on the door. even if you are replacing the top panel. this is because as soon as u remove a panel, the door becomes lighter and the spring will start recoiling because it is typically set to balance the weight of the entire door
@@lexi-conby Thanks for your reply. I think you are right. I have seen in other videos where you can weigh the door down or block it with vice grips to keep it from moving upward. Wonder if that's a good solution.
Great video but I can’t figure out how you attached the comealong to the cable when the cable runs vertically. If you do another video the cameraman should take close up shots of exactly where to hook up the come along.
I have been installing garage doors since 2008 and even I don't understand what he did in that video. Very unclear and dangerous instructions
yes, the installer was blocking the camera view to see exactly what he was connecting to. I agree with you.
he attached to the rollers.
Hi Jake, great video, can you show how you connected comealon to drop panel lower?
Yes please. This is probably the most important part that we cannot see.
its very easy if you went and looked at your door theres literally only one place you can attach the comealong. I know this is a very old comment but he attaches to the Rollers.
That's different but I like it. Good job man, great video 👍
Or skip the come-along all together. Just close the garage door. Then put your clamp on the track above the lowest roller. Remove the bolts/screws on the middle track you want to remove and use the garage door opener to pull the rest out of the way. Bob's yer uncle.
OMG!! That the most important tools to have for this yob that was not explained in the video. Thank for the tip.
This is not a good practice on all doors. If the door has springs it's to help the opener lift the door. If the door is big or has insulated panels and is heavy it's a good way to bust the opener. If the opener could lift the door then why would it even need springs? Hmmmmm
@J M raising the door releases pressure. Lowering it adds to it. That's y it lifts easy... the spring aids in lifting..
If only it was an electric door 😆 🤣
where do you attach the bottom of the come along?
I wish you would have shown a closer look at what you were doing with the come along. I couldn't see to where you were hooking it to.
I think you could grab the spring bar with vice grips and wedge it against the door header to keep the spring from unraveling.
where does one purchase individual panels?
I don't understand where and how to attach the come along. A close up video showing that would be great.
Need a cable puller too..?
Will it be the same process if it’s the bottom most panel that needs replaced? I do see there is line cable that attached at the bottom, makes me want to ask. Thanks.
attachment is a cable grip made by klein.
Where does the come along hook into? Theree is absolutely no explanation of this step and yo cannot tell from the video what exactly you did..
Yeah, he had me until he mentioned the mysterious "come along" tool, which (1) I've never heard of, (2) seems to be a tool used by experienced garage door technicians, and (3) something mentioned at the very beginning of this otherwise helpful clip, making it more or less useless. ;-(
@@joemann5378 read my reply i just posted to avoid the come along tool
Hello great video. Question: where do you hook the Come a Long too?
Could you share where the lower hook of the come along puller is hooked up? Thx
is that a specific come along where do I buy it?
Where do you buy a single panel?
You call the manufacturer and they'll let you know.
Where do I buy panels from?
Hi, I am replacing the bottom panel on my garage door. I was wondering about the come along you use. Is it a special kind? I'm confused about how to attach it to the cable. Or is from the track to the door just to keep the weight of the door of the cable? Great video by the way, I'm pumped I don't need to unload the springs
Same question but he doesn't offer alternative options to the come along and how to replace bottom or top panel
@@deniseolague9292 There are two things he is using a comealong and a cable grip attached to the comealong. He attached the cable grip do the door wire to offload the tension of the springs. So the comealong is acting like the door springs.
i need to replace just the bottom panel. I backed into it inside my garage i guess i was too quick for the door, where do i buy the new panel?
Same...did you purchase yet and if so where?
@@naywoods436 no i pushed it back into place. Finding a matching panel next to impossible , likely have to replace the entire door
does anyone know where to purchase a single panel
nobody wants to sell them, the installers all have a monopoly, they tell you it's too dangerous, it's a racket, I've been hunting for a Haas door panel for weeks. I'm trying to go through an installer now. The other hitch is they like to "discontinue" the models so you have to spring for a whole new door, it's a racket
where do you attach the bottom of the comealong to
Jim Janish to your but
@@ChrisBorghi22 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
how much does it cost for 1 panel replacement typically for part and labor? Thanks
I was wondering if you ever found out how much it costs?
hey retrolee09, you can usually get a good deal on a come-along at Harbor Freight.
And where to buy a garage door panel? All I can see for sale is just an entire garage door. Thank you.
contact a garage door company that keeps them in stock. OR contact the actual dealer themselves.
Sir, can you recommend someone in the Buda/Austin area...... I've called around and these folks are insane. -Pressing to install a whole new door when I need a panel. Please help
Can you please tell me how you put that come along on there
Thank you for your video.
My question is how I can reattach the panel to the frame of the garage ?
and can I do welding to it?
Is it absolutely necessary to use the "Come Along" to remove the panel. I have very simple Clospay aluminum door .I don't own a come along and don't think I would use the tool very much could you pry the doors apart and put a lenght of wood or something in between? I really want to do this. I have my panels but I don't want to pay an installer? What do you suggest? How much is a come along , anyhow?
Thanks, bud!
Where can I buy the single panel
and why do you need the come along?
to take tension off the cables so the door doesnt blow out....only other way of doing it is taking section by section out i do this for a living
Thanks for the heads up!
Somebody likes to complicate easy things. Lift the door off the floor 1.5". Place 4 wise grips (2 are enough, 2 extra for safety) under rollers. Back-wind the springs two quarters and leave to winding bars inserted. Remove and replace whatever you need. Slowly wind back the springs and the door will travel 1.5" up to put tension in the cables. Done and give warranty.
Thanks!
@J M "leave two* winding bars inserted"
Thanks Jake!!
Which part of the garage door you installed the come along?
Great video! I've got a rusty bottom panel to a 16x7 insulated garage door. I'd love to have a pro replace it but everybody I speak to says I can only replace the whole door. What do I do?
Go buy a single panel and have a professional install it. If they say you need a new door they’re up selling you/ ripping you off. Unless your door is old and don’t make them anymore.
I just love how his reasoning for getting a professional is "this might not be quite as easy as I make it look" (because removing bolts is that hard) and "it might not be easy to round up the tools". Sorry bro, I know how to use a ratchet and I have a Harbor Freight tools right down the street.
The ONLY thing I can imagine being difficult would be finding a matching door panel.
+thincrediblewho And you just happen to have a cable come along at your house, right? You non-professionals always think something looks easy until you hurt yourself. I used to work for a small company, with about 15 techs in the field. There were always one or two out on workman's comp because shit happens when you're dealing with torsion springs. So you and your little smart assed attitude can go ahead and try to do it yourself. After you fuck it up you'll call me.
You don't even need a come along so shows how much you know.
thincrediblewho Calm the fuck down.Damn SMH
I just laugh at this sort of silliness. I wish I had had the gall to take pictures of all the DIY homeowners who had their hands bundled in bloody bandages when I went to repair their doors.
Klein tools sells a cable puller. It's around $200 .. without the come along.
Probably cheaper to hire someone to do it unless one expects to do this often.
There are other ways to do it. This is not a video for the DIY guy.
How and where do you attach the come along?
TO the rollers on the lower panel and the panels above
I wish I could replace a single garage door panel, but I can't find anyone who will sell me a single panel...they all want to do a 3k door replacement
Wefound someone on facebook marketplace that was converting their garage to a living space and taking out their whole doors, I just bought a bottom panel. $50.
Thanks man you helped me get it done!!
What is the attachment on the come along that allows you to grip the cable? Where can I get one?
Your voice sounds exactly like Rand Paul. 👍
what did he attach the come alond too
TO THE ROLLERS.
insirational vibe cool dude...
1. Shouldn't use those types of jaw vise grips. Should be the C clamp style vise grips. Those plier types will damage the track, and don't always hold with the contact surfaces you're clamping to. The C Clamp style vise grip will clamp to the inside of the track, pinching the flat metal surfaces of the inside of the track, ensuring a better fastening.
2. Who has a come-along and cable clamp like that? I do because I'm an installer/repairman. The everyday DIY guy does not. It's simple enough to just raise the door off the floor a couple inches, and clamp it so the upper panels do not roll down when removing a panel. Then, remove the necessary components to separate the panels, and then take some winding bars, insert into winding plug, and then lower the panels by pushing up on the winding bar, and insert the other winding bar into the next hole, letting it rest against the top panel to hold the cables limp. I would also recommend removing the fixtures on the top of the panel you are removing so a person is not fighting those hinges hanging down. On wider doors this is more of an issue.
What's the widening plug? How do you unwind it? Do you have a video
joe prewitt Winding plug. You use a 3/8" round stock bar and use it to release on the spring tension.
alwcurlz then take some winding bars, insert into winding plug, and then lower the panels by pushing up on the winding bar, and insert the other winding bar into the next hole, letting it rest against the top panel to hold the cables limp.
I just cant picture this. do you need the cable to be limp? Are you available for consultation help me do this is can throw you 50
joe prewitt I think we're quite a distance away.
because the spring will unwind
I understand your comment about tools but the only "specialty" tool is the come along. Other than that, anyone who fixes their own home regularly would have pliers, drill etc.
how much does it cost to replace one single garage door panel?
Hi- can you tell me where I can buy that comealong attachment? Thanks!
The cable grip?
You just pissed off every handiman in the county.
this is an advertisement and he didn't want to teach . he wanted to convince that an expert should do it..
c clamps please
Are these panels weldable?
No sectional panels shouldnt be welded, you can weld tracks, or maybe on piece metal doors or rolling steel doors. Maybe you can weld to repair cracks on sections but are not meant to be welded together.
can u pls spell the tool name that u r placing under the rollers
Vise grip pliers. There are many manufacturers.
I dont have s cable
then your door doesn't open
Like the others, I could not see the come-along attachment. Your back was in the way. You ran through it so fast like you wanted us to give up and hire a professional. I don't have the money for that right now. So this video seems more like an advertisement than a help to the DYI homeowner.
what if the garage is a finished garage and you can only change the doors from the outside?
I think this video is going to get people hurt. Leave this to professionals since those springs are holding over 100lbs of force.
Who has a come along.
Vice Grips.
Some people call them Mole Grips.
Potahto, potayto.
Instructions:
Step 1- put vise grips under rollers.
Step 2- replace the rest of the panel.
I think Jacob is on the drugs.
why not just unhitch the entire cable? No need for the come-along
The weight of the door is on the cable, suspended by a few hundred pounds of force from the torsion bar. Don't try this unless you know what you're doing. I've tried. It's really easy to get hurt.
FYI, I have a 15 rule for ads before clips. Yours is 30 seconds long so I went elsewhere.
Step 1: Call a professional
Step 2 : dont be a dick.
You need to hire a pro.
