If you don't want to mess with fertilisers and you have a pond or aquarium, just use the pond/tank water to fill the bottle, even better if there's fish in it. I've used vermiculite with a little gravel in my bottle stack and its working well. I used some plastic gutter guard from the £1 shop to stop the media falling back out.
I use paper towel as a wick and here is why. The paper towel will last long enough for the roots to grow to the water so at that point it’s very easy to remove the unnecessary wick. With the rope your more likely to damage the roots if you remove it and what’s the point of it if you don’t need it anymore.
I have gotten leftover wallpaper rolls large at thrift stores for just a dollar or two, and which could make nice matching, fairly water resistant cylinders to cover the outside of the bottle.
If you fill your nutrient solution a little higher level - where it just touches the bottom of the grow media, then the media acts like the wick, and the rope or cloth is not needed. :)
Live North of Tampa on a pond,,, Water in Florida is the worst in the country...I still filter my water out before it goes to the garden... Thinking about this on my fence..
Might have to try this with a few of my favourite peppers. Too bad I don't own fish any more. I used to grow strong plants with the water changes from the koi plant.
One, you can buy cotton string at the dollar tree real cheap, works and lasts. Two, wouldn't algae be Not good because it will absorb the oxygen in the water which will deprive the roots of the plant?
Ha I literally just done this today then decided to look up if people had done it and you have done exactly what I done. I used a sponge as the media though and it doubles as a wick
if we were to do this as a kids experiment and do some spinach, what would I need to do for the nutrients? Are we still needing to do all 3 parts of the Flora nutrient kits?
Believe it or not,i have had an idea similar to this.the hole where the cap is,is where the roots will be.But I thought the plant would fall in the water.I could have it done, but I don't know how to do it ,and don't have resources.
why wouldn't make the drinking hole touch the water? probebly a good reason.. just wondering.. wouldn't need a wick if the medium is slightly above/touching the water
Oh yeah I'm totally not gonna use this to Hydroponically bud. Lol. I like how on their site it's like "This is such a great blog/post for kids and school!
can you inform me about how to identify the fan leaves. which leaves are the fan leaves my girl is getting very close to flowering but she has so many leaves i don't know which ones to pick off
Would 'Chux' cloth perforated kitchen wipes work as a wicking material and keep the fine coco-coir from leaking out into the water? The roots should be able to eventually penetrate the tiny holes in the cloth.
If light gets to the water ya you should change out the water once a week due to Algae will start to grow. There are few ways to combat the algae like if the water stays cool or the container is light proof. In the winter when I grow lettuce in mason jar I don’t have to change the water at all because it stays cold, also plants will grow lot slower too.
***** I would typically just add water if it's low. As far as nutrients, I really like the General Hydroponics 3 Part series for beginners. You can find it here: www.epicgardening.com/recomments/generalhydroponics3part
+Brandon Horton Bark is too rich in carbon and will absorb a lot of nitrates, and pebbles won't have the capillary action of other media. You're looking for something mostly non nutritive like coir or moss (cellulose), expanded clay, pumice/perlite or some mixture thereof.
This is a wick system where the bulk of the plant's roots are in a hydroton media, which is porous enough and has enough gaps to have good oxygenation.
Strip down to basics and forget the co co growing beens or what ever u wanna sues and forget the string or wick and just stick plant in water it will grow fine root and grow fine like that and then u only need a used bottle and the cutting and something to cut the top of the bottle off ;) 👌🏻😜👍
I haven't done it myself, but I don't see why not! It'd just be a bit slower growing, and you'd need to transplant to a larger system relatively quickly!
You could try alpine strawberries, they have much smaller leaves and very small but very tasty fruit. They are my fave strawberry. I'm currently trying to grow a normal strawberry in a bottle stack system and so far its doing well, it was a tiny runner with no root and in just a few days its grown a leaf.

I wish you showed us an actual example of a real plant 🌱 But thanks for the effort on your presentation ☺️
I think we should ask for an updated version.
That was so much fun now I want to make one of those
I have gotten leftover wallpaper rolls large at thrift stores for just a dollar or two, and which could make nice matching, fairly water resistant cylinders to cover the outside of the bottle.
Missed a step, blowing my freaking mind! This is gonna be cool!
shoestrings works best i been using self watering bottle almost made the same way dnt have to worry about any rotting
+C Trey Good call!
...I cut up a new cotton mop head for wicks...hundreds....use them in my gutter garden too ...
Yeah yeahs exactly what I was looking for so the kids can have some learning experience to have a green thumb

Clever!
I'm gonna try and grow hydroponically for The first time using this system with Cilantro plants hope they work out
Cilantro works really well in a system like this!
I use rain water ( no chemicals )
Always a good idea!
not tring to be a dick but doesnt rain water have random chemichals like oil picked up with the rain and leaky gas and all sorts of bad stuff!
+A T-rex with short arms also aluminum from chemtrails
Water is a chemical
*rolls eyes*
THANKYOU sir, this shall help with limited funds for personal pursuits, and with reusing soda bottles
shiawasekappukekiful Of course my friend :) GROW ON

Definitely give it a try - you could have dozens of them on a fence!
Hi, is it possible if I use cotton as a growing media? Thank you.
Might have to try this with a few of my favourite peppers.
Too bad I don't own fish any more. I used to grow strong plants with the water changes from the koi plant.
+astrangeone Get some more fish! Or just do this hydroponically. Peppers can work very well!
Epic Gardening
Planning to do some hydroponically grown veggies too. I love the fact that they are easy to grow.
One, you can buy cotton string at the dollar tree real cheap, works and lasts.
Two, wouldn't algae be Not good because it will absorb the oxygen in the water which will deprive the roots of the plant?
Yeah you wouldn't want algae ideally...will just cause a mess and interfere with growth
Thanks!
Mark a water level on bottle when level is low fill it up
Great idea.
I wish you live a good life
This is EPIC
Thank you
Ha I literally just done this today then decided to look up if people had done it and you have done exactly what I done.
I used a sponge as the media though and it doubles as a wick
Nice tutorial
The algae will also eat up your nutrients
you can use dried up algae as a plant nutrient. yet another symbiotic relationship? maybe
Yes I'm sure you can - not 100% sure on the nutrient composition but I can't see why not!
if we were to do this as a kids experiment and do some spinach, what would I need to do for the nutrients? Are we still needing to do all 3 parts of the Flora nutrient kits?
Believe it or not,i have had an idea similar to this.the hole where the cap is,is where the roots will be.But I thought the plant would fall in the water.I could have it done, but I don't know how to do it ,and don't have resources.
Give this one a shot then!

Tqsm ...now i can demo step by step to my class
Great video!
+Kelvin Green Thanks!

Great Idea! Thank you for Sharing.
You're welcome!
@Carl Xross
Me too! 😁 she's a real sport, eh?
Have a nice day sir
Can I use kitchen waste composting tea as nutrients in this Hydroponics system
Thank you
No, the nutrients from composting tea are not available for the plants, they need to be processed.

Thank you

Good luck growing cannabis in a 2 liter bottle
can we grow onions in any of hydroponic system and mushrooms if yes then please share a video on how to grow hydroponoc mushrooms
Onions are possible, mushrooms are not!
Do u have any video on hydroponic onions please share link i can't find and thank you
Mushrooms are a fungus bro
Any chance of redoing this with more decent audio quality?
I like that system an trying it
Nice grammar
Hello Sir, my name is Ifeanyi, what are the quantities of nutrients solution needed for a 14litres container.
Thanks
You're welcome!
can you inform me about how to identify the fan leaves. which leaves are the fan leaves my girl is getting very close to flowering but she has so many leaves i don't know which ones to pick off
Would 'Chux' cloth perforated kitchen wipes work as a wicking material and keep the fine coco-coir from leaking out into the water? The roots should be able to eventually penetrate the tiny holes in the cloth.
Thank you very much. Why this set-up doesn't require an air-pump while the larger ones do?
See my video on The Kratky Method for an explanation :)
After how many days chenge water??
Amazing!
Nice
Nice man
Are mosquitoes a concern in a small setup like this? Thank you!
Outdoor possibly
Heard the skype sound in 2024 and was like WTF, then I noticed when the video was published :D
Not to nitpick but didn't you need to put the wick in before you filled the pot with growing medium?
I would!
how frequently do we need to change the water ?
I would change this out at least once a week, but monitor it in the meantime!
If light gets to the water ya you should change out the water once a week due to Algae will start to grow. There are few ways to combat the algae like if the water stays cool or the container is light proof.
In the winter when I grow lettuce in mason jar I don’t have to change the water at all because it stays cold, also plants will grow lot slower too.
besides lettuce, spinach and basil what other plant do you suggest growing in this method? bak choi or cabbage perhaps?
I like to use leafy greens with this because they're so easy to grow and don't get TOO big. I'd keep it small with these!
YOU EXPLAIN THIS TECHNIQUE VERY WELL. CAN I GROW FLOWERS USING THIS TECHNIQUE?
Yes!
Nice 💯👌🏼😎✌🏼
Rather than a wick, can't you just have a higher water level like you would in the Kratky method?
very nice
many thanks

HOW
Can I use Vermiculite as a growing media instead of the hydroton or coconut coir?
Ok tq
How often do I need to change the water? Or all I have to do is add water if the water level is low? What about the type of nutrients to use?
***** I would typically just add water if it's low. As far as nutrients, I really like the General Hydroponics 3 Part series for beginners. You can find it here: www.epicgardening.com/recomments/generalhydroponics3part

Could you use this method from start to finsish
Yup!
@@epicgardening cool man but with cannabis

What are the brown things ?that look like nuts?
How come you don't need an aerator in this kind of garden? What stops the plant drowning?
This is a wick system where the bulk of the plant's roots are in a hydroton media, which is porous enough and has enough gaps to have good oxygenation.
Nice. ..thanks
+sharda chakraborty Welcome!
☺
How come it doesn’t need a pump
would pete moss work too?
How would you get the roots to grow through the pop bottle lid if the strings in there
They'll fit :)
Wick... cotton wool?
Strip down to basics and forget the co co growing beens or what ever u wanna sues and forget the string or wick and just stick plant in water it will grow fine root and grow fine like that and then u only need a used bottle and the cutting and something to cut the top of the bottle off ;) 👌🏻😜👍
+Ollie Rad Yeah, that's Kratky-style hydroponics and also works very well :)
Which fertiliser or spray should I use,if again that kind of thing gonna happen.
Neem oil is a good idea
Does this work with rice hauls? If yes, won't it go through the bottle cap hole?
how do you add new water i mean can i just pull it out even when te roots are already in the water??
Yes you can just lift the top part out and add new water!
Wouldn't the plant fall down into the water because of that whole or do you clog that with the wick?
The growing medium and the wick help keep everything in place :)
"we need to add our meat and our plant.. boom"
Can this work for Chile's???
Yup!
can i use soil instead of coconut powder and my other question is can i grow tomato also ??
what are the alternates i can use in the medium, what type of nutrients are used in water?
what does putting the aluminum foil around the bottle do for the plant
It doesn't do anything for the PLANT actually, but it blocks light from hitting your water + nutrients, which stops algae growth!
Can you plant seeds in the rocks or does it have to be a already started plant?
You can plant seeds!
I have plenty 2litres bottles
+dev bachu Good luck Dev!
@ H.Wotsupdoc
Please elaborate about the rinse, is it necessary to add something to the rinse to remove harmful effects of the petroleum?
Can I grow Rosemary on this?
I haven't done it myself, but I don't see why not! It'd just be a bit slower growing, and you'd need to transplant to a larger system relatively quickly!
Hi Kevin.... no holes in the bottle at all, in the 2litre hydroponic water system?
Avril Lategan That's right - no holes, the "cap" of the bottle serves as the hole!
Epic Gardening Kevin, what about drainage for the soil? Will a few holes in the soil area not be a benefit?
How long will it take a basil seed to sprout I am using Rockwool starter cubes
Basil takes at least 4-5 days to germinate...it's a slow grower.

lisa lavergne ,

Where can I buy snap solution
have you experience mosquito larvae in the water?
I haven't!
can i grow lemon
Lemon would be much too big for a system like this.
How about strawberries??
They fruit, so they'd be harder to grow in a 2 liter bottle - you may need a bigger system for them!
Would twine work as a wick substitute
Probably not as good, but it'd still work OK!
will the growing media not drop into the water?
If it's moist enough, nothing will drop. And a little spillage isn't a big deal anyways :)

+dev bachu Check www.amazon.com and see!
How does the soil stay in the top part?
I used cottonballs
+Elizabeth Arredondo It's moist and won't fall below, especially because the wicking material blocks the passage a bit.
Is it possible to use gravel as growing media for this diy?
+TheUsualNobody yup, totally!
Epic Gardening Won't it through the cap hole?
Epic Gardening Is it possible to keep my plant roots moist with gravel?
Put a larger stone at the bottom
Possible - you may want to use a rockwool cube or rapid rooter starter plug for support though
