I was a seminary student at NOBTS in 2008. I went to the seminary’s extension at Church of Brook Hills where David was the pastor. I am not shocked by this at all.
@@tanks1945 I am not saying that what David was doing then was questionable. He was on the rise at that time. He was hardly ever at the church. It is hard to “pastor” a church when you are “in demand” every where else.
I got there just after he left for IMB. He came back for the funeral of one of the pastors. It was the first time that I had ever heard of him or listened to him speak. I wasn't impressed. Next time I saw him was at a G3 Conference. Was less impressed than the 1st time.
Elders, the microsecond that your pastor goes off the rails you get him in line. If he is stubborn then he needs to be fired immediately. That’s your job. You are supposed to protect the flock.
Saw it last night. I hope and pray solid new elders can fix this mess. It also highlights the fact that a voting congregation can often be clueless imo.
We used to attend MBC. We left before they pushed Lon out. Now, there are dozens of former members at Immanuel Bible in Springfield (an incredible church focused on the Gospel).
I used to like Platt but once he started doing the social justice thing I was done with him & I say this as a Hispanic American, the kingdom of God is not about that stuff “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
I will say, I’ve been an official member at Brook Hills (where Platt used to preach) in Birmingham, AL, since 2017. I attended there mostly since 2011. I attended several of the T4G’s as well. Platt’s sermon at that T4G about racism gave me really uneasy feelings, and it did not seem right. Fortunately, he never really spoke on any of those things when he was pastor at Brook Hills. I’ll finish watching this when I have more time, and look forward to reading Basham’s Shepherds for Sale. Be on the lookout brothers and sisters! There are wolves among us in sheep’s clothing. “By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” 2 Timothy 1:14
Thanks for answering a question I had regarding his time at Brook Hills. I had friends that went there and wondered if he was teaching CRT at this time there, but it seems like that was his pre-CRT days.
Frankly, I see both sides. I think it is good to introduce new initiatives while also being transparent with the congregation. This is why I have an issue with both congregant-ran churches and pastor-ran churches. There’s little room for authentic, healthy growth. The main 🚩is the evading of questions and omitting important information (e.g. not admitting SBC- affiliation). But also, I’ve been in congregant-led churches who essentially control everything about the church, including the pastor. But it seems like the congregation had genuine concerns that weren’t being addressed.
There is no “both sides”. One guy orchestrated the Lon>Pratt switch and set up the SBC connection before the elders knew anything. Good fruit never is produced on the foundation of deception. Never had a chance.
Jon, thanks for your efforts here! Charlatans need to be exposed by name. So thnaks for your courage. I know there are others doing this good work, but you are definitely on the forefront. Thank you again!
Our former pastor had bought boxes of DP's book for the church to read; he also had a dvd series by Rob Bell, which he used as a pre-service bible study; and the entire church was doing a "small groups" study of RW's 40 DOP. My husband and I declined to participate in the DP and RB studies, and dropped the RW 40 DOP study after the first chapter. That pastor retired, and his replacement promoted BLM. We left that church and attended another from 2019 -- 2020. Long story so I won't get into it here, but, we were "disfellowshipped" from that church. In hindsight, it was the best thing to happen to us! We haven't been to church since 2020, and, quite frankly, haven't missed it at all. Scandals within the church don't surprise me anymore. The entire system is corrupt and needs to go ( 1 mouth and hundreds of ears is not a body). First century church is the biblical model.
Bingo, are you building that and or willing to be a part of that? Because I cannot seem to find very many ithe body willing to sacrifice and integrate for the l least of these.
how would you define the plea from God for His people to advocate for the widows, orphans, those who cannot advocate for themselves? that could be defined as social justice and is throughout scripture, old and new. though I will add that NT scripture advises people to not be hung up on their tribal identity and genealogies.
@@ofoliveoilandhoney That is NOT social justice as what all the modern purveyors of that mean. That is Biblical Justice. It is NOT govt based but church based...All modern 'social injustice BS. argues for massive state control and interference to establish so called social justice. Then it filters down into private corporations and other institutions. e.g. DEI racism. IF you want to apply 'social justice ' to all Biblical talk of 'justice' then the best example of social justice would be the proper punishing of criminals to establish fear in them . Does the U. S do that ? Hardly at all IF what Platt and other SJ nuts advocate is true...Christianity would have never gotten out of Jerusalem and the early church would have become an endless grudge tussle of which group owed what to whom . Every group had been 'oppressed' by some other e.g. the Jews by the Romans , and Greeks..The Greeks by the Romans and Macedonians, the Jews by the Persians and the Samaritans by the Jews and the Galileans by the Judeans and on and on .Far deeper grievances than e.g. slavery in America ..We are talking about massive conquests and enslavement and razing of whole cities and countless deaths. e.tc.
@@ofoliveoilandhoney The issue is that modern cultural social justice is not the same as what the scriptures represent. And unfortunately, the secular version of social justice is preached from some pulpits. Bringing confusion and not unity.
This is heartbreaking. I was a graduate student in Washington DC from 2002 - 2005 and attended MBC. I was a member of the ASL interpreting team and grew so much through the teaching of Lon Solomon and still listen to him online. I also attended the Deaf Church at Brookhills 2006-2008, a ministry of the Church at Brookhills when David firdt became pastor there. He is an impressive orator and speaker. It's just awful what he's done and the false, oppressive teaching he's spreading.
My people perish for lack of knowledge... we are told not to be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Study to show yourself approved... false teachers and false prophets are those that worm there way onto the homes of weak willed women, always learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the Truth
Dear David Platt, I am more than my skin color. Don't assume you know me because I fit into a vague, overly-simplistic category. Thank you. Sincerely, A white person
I didnt go to this church, but I always felt like something wasn't right with Platt. He always made me feel uncomfortable. I went to a Bible study that used one of his books, but I always felt like he wasn't a genuine person. I couldn't watch his preaching without feeling like something was very wrong with his character. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I know the check of the spirit when I feel it. A good orator and a charismatic entity doesn't mean an honorable christ filled leader. This makes me sad.
The Holy Spirit does not operate primarily by feelings and you are looking for something to confirm your bias. This is a toxic and unhealthy abuse of the work of the Spirit of our lives, to act like your irrational feelings were from Him.
Comments that ask honest and good questions concerning this documentary, or speak in favor of David Platt appear to be removed by the account manager. Why is that? This comments section is largely filled with those who echo the agenda of this documentary. My comments (which are not filled with anger or hatred) have been removed from accounts about this video.
I am noticing the hypocrisy; the comments in response to this documentary appear to support the agenda of the video. I wonder when this post will be taken down.
As a Southern Baptist seminary student, a member of the Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, AL, where Platt used to pastor, this video makes my blood boil. Platt was in gross violation of McLean’s constitution, and, worse, has taught and teaches in contradiction to Scripture by pushing the CRT and BLM narratives. God will not overlook it 👏👏🙌🙌
I am watching this sad documentary and it reminds me of "Whether We Live Or Die" by WA Criswell (available on UA-cam). Though dead he yet speaks. I encourage those fighting at MBC to take a listen to that sermon and keep on in the fight. Fight for the heart of the church. In that sermon take note of the third point on Crawford H. Toy.
This is very concerning and deserves a thorough response. We should be careful to come to swift judgments but also seek the truth for the glory of God and the good of His people. Today I will pray that Platt and others will humble himself to this accusations. There are far more than the necessary witnesses to bring a charge against him.
This is shocking, disturbing to say the least! Thank you for sharing this Jon, it’s heartbreaking to hear how the good work that was established over 30 years of faithful shepherding was destroyed so quickly. May the Lord use this documentary to warn others, and may God’s will be done to continue to expose the SBC leaders who have participated in this wickedness. They need to repent, because one day we will all stand before God and be judged.
It is by no coincidence that the same top SBC player backing Platt during the takeover of and turmoil at McClain Bible Church with Platt was also central to the turmoil and subsequent SBC takeover at First Baptist Church of Naples Florida. Who was the man who participated in promotional videos before both congregations to introduce them to their new SBC man? In each case local ministries were being sacrificed. And for what? So resources could get redirected and funneled to the SBC? Sadly David Platt is beholden to the same man. It’s all about power and how to redirect funds into the hands of the SBC elites. In my estimation they don’t even have any real philosophical loyalty to CRT, rather CRT is just a convenient and unscrupulous means by which to divide and conquer these churches, get access to their funds and silence their own critics. Then once you see the nature of the abuses against Pastor William McRaney by the same man, things really start to come into focus. Are we allowed to notice any common denominators and patterns of behavior?
Satan used events and people to further his evil purposes with false guilt to create hate and division. James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
I’m really trying to put the pieces together as I’m watching this, but if I’m being very honest, the way this is edited and told is difficult to make sense of, at least if you’re a complete outsider. I’ve never heard of David Platt. I clicked on this wanting to learn more… but it is confusing to say the least. So you learn only halfway in that Platt was a known celebrity pastor before coming to MBC, but wouldn’t this have been a crucial piece of information to know at the very beginning? Where did Platt even come from? What was he known for before MBC? None of this info is given here. The whole “SBC affiliation” controversy is sprinkled throughout this video, but it isn’t stated until the end that the whole reason it’s controversial is because MBC was founded as a nondenominational church! Here I was, scratching my head about why it would be significant or worrying that Platt and the new board of pastors was affiliated with the SBC. It’s like the director/editor of this project assumed everyone would just… know this crucial detail. I believe this is a story worthy of telling, and I want to hear it. I really do. If anyone involved in the making of this documentary is reading this: can I offer the following piece of advice? Imagine someone like me, with zero prior context of anyone or anything in the documentary, is watching. Make sure that the flow makes it so that details are properly set up so that it makes sense! Now, since I still have no clue who Platt is/was after watching this whole thing, can someone tell me if there’s a more straightforward way of learning about his backstory before I watch Part 2?
MBC affiliated with SBC under Lon Solomon to partner in order to plant new biblical churches. They are not an SBC, and that partnership ended long ago when they stopped the church plant partnership. McLean is not an SBC church, it never was, it was a temporary partnering started with Lon Solomon.
Brother, the reason it's hard to follow is because it is intentionally manipulative and deceptive. The creators of this documentary leave out crucial facts that paint them in a terrible light and that is why it is so hard to follow. They are very nearly slandering David Platt.
@@captainkirk2705 It seems like Platt did not lead this church well though. That’s pretty undeniable. Can you disprove or give any further context to debunk anything presented here? It’s one thing to say, “This is full of lies” but it’s another thing to actually tell me what the lies were and what the truth actually is.
@@captainkirk2705 Platt seems to dodge questions. I watched part 1 and 2 and why are the church financials shared. Why 100,000’s in line item? My church gives very detailed (and who cares how big it is) financial report. What about the PPP loan? When did the constitution change that gives elders and platt more power? Lots of questions you just CAN NOT sweep under the rug.
I left an evangelical church like this for the Holy Orthodox Church, and it was like going from insanity to sanity, from fast food to a home cooked meal
It sounds like the Platt sins according to the former leaders of MBC who somehow were overrun: - Platt’s first commitment was to the SBC, rather than to MBC. - Platt was underhanded and deceptive in getting MBC to contribute heavily to the SBC (where Platt clearly had a conflict of interest). - Platt devalued, ignored, and did not place himself under the Constitution of the church that hired him to lead it regarding their insistence on being forever independent and not beholden to a denomination (or association). - Platt had perhaps an overzealous view of racism and desires for implementation of curriculum that was deemed tainted by CRT influences. - Platt dismantled key ministries that alienated and undermined beloved church leaders, servants, and effective ministries. - Platt worked in isolation with 1-2 key leaders against the elders (keeping elders in the dark) on major decisions (financing and hires) that were illegal (unconstitutional) for a Congregational church; rather acting as an autocrat. - He booted out long term faithful leaders and replaced them with his own peeps, meanwhile virtually erasing Lon Solomon’s heritage, making it a new David Platt church - as if it were a hostile takeover, rather than the next generation with continuity. Part 1 Summary. Did I miss anything so far?
How is it possible that the elders didn't know that this "not an SBC church" was funneling so much money to SBC entities? Looks like there was significant overlap between the time Pastor Platt was in charge of IMB and also pastoring MBC which makes that funneling look like a major conflict of interest. Paul Maxwell (come back Paul!) wrote/said something a long time ago that has stuck with me. Something like, "Things like this don't happen unless the *other* men at the church let it happen."
All of this is a perfect test case for why you should be happy in a nice small, independent, and well-governed church. If the elders cannot govern, then something is very wrong. What a horribly sad and ugly look for all involved.
I went to MBC in the 90s when I was a young adult living in Northern VA. Lon Solomon had a huge impact on my walk with Christ in those years. I remember being astonished to hear that Platt was "chosen" to lead MBC. It just didn't seem like a good fit. Two very different pastors.
It’s hard to imagine why Lon wasn’t honored by participating in choosing his replacement. The narrative here is chaotic and has large gaps. How did it come about that Platt became Interim Pastor? How did he become Lead Pastor without full vetting? How is it possible that MBC was giving hundreds of thousands of $$ to the SNC without being an SBC Church? How did the elders not fire Platt for ignoring the church Constitution?
I used to visit McLean Bible Church with my friend who was a member and from another culture. She loved McLean and her kids too. She left after Platt changed it. I was there the Sunday after he prayed for Trump it was a very uncomfortable and told congregation not to speak. He definitely had an agenda. In one sermon he said asking Jesus in your heart was easy believing. As a child I asked Jesus into my heart and have grown in my faith. Thank you for exposing David Platt.
NOT defending Platt by "asking Jesus into your heart" is NOT Biblical ... it is churchianity "doctrine" NOT saying you did not enter into covenant at that time BUT millions said a sinner's prayer or asked Jesus into their heart ... but actively live in daily unrepentance=sin
@foechicken8023 Perhaps Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, Jacob/James, Jude etc .. did NOT get the memo ... Many regurgitate "Christian doctrine" vs the entirety of Scripture Peter warned 1960ish years ago the Paul was being perverted by the ignorant yo justify the error of lawlessness .. which is sin TheJesus of Scripture AND the apostles and the "older" prophets ... and His eternal Word ... woukd differ
Simply put, I carefully, gently, thoughtfully, lovingly, and with great consideration to as much evidence as I could study, profoundly disagree with David Platt and how the leadership at MBC have handled things. My heart aches for those affected by it all. I am praying for them and the church.
I came away from it with a "feeling" like I should be getting something out of it but I didn't get anything out of it, I can't even remember a single thing that impacted me, other than a vague impression that "I should have radical faith".
It appears Platt has serious character flaws, to say the least. It was already clear that he had some serious theological errors after that T4G sermon.
I used to drive an hour each week to hear Lon Solomon teach the Bible. I stopped going when he retired. I listened to David a few times but did not learn anything and was not moved by the Spirit the way I was when Lon preached.
💯… or maybe it was always planned to happen ( there seems to be some military connection) has anyone done research on who David Platt is connected to (generational family)?
The second a church stops being forthright in their financials is the day I give my money to someone who is open and honest about it. No way I’d continue tithing to MBC (or even still be a member there for that matter).
This is the way it’s always been in Protestantism. Luther, Calvin etc. Itself being an offshoot Roman papalism which followed its leader the pope into various heresies. But the True Holy Orthodox Christian Faith remains and continues to follow That Great Shepherd of the Sheep: our Lord Jesus Christ. Glory to Thee our God, glory to Thee☦️🙏🏻
I don't get it, what's wrong with David platt?? I've been listening to him for several years and he preaches the word of God and His Gospel, I have heard him preaching the cross and the wrath of God beautifully
I look forward to watching and learning. Knowing this was forthcoming I have some questions… It’s my understanding that Lon Solomon signed a non disclosure agreement (‘NDA’) when he left MBC. I’m curious what was confidential/sensative in a normal pastoral transition that needed an NDA? I am assuming Lon approved of the transition to David, which stands in opposition to what I had thought which is…Lon (and I could be wrong and folks have a right to change their mind) repeatedly and publicly stated he was staying in the McLean Bible pulpit til the Lord called him home? Do folks that put this video together think Lon and the all male elder board were “hoodwinked/purchased a lemon?” Also, why didn't Lon stay the lead pastor at MBC? Did the elders ask Lon to move on or was it Lon’s decision? Has the NDA expired? If so, has Lon and the elders at the time (except for Craig Proulx) publically addressed the questions we all have?
@Jon Have you tried contacting Sal Cordova? He has a small youtube channel called "Evidence and Reasons" and is one of the members of MCB that sued for financial records; he would be interesting to talk to. Also he has an interesting science back ground and I stumbled upon him and his channel after watching a debate where he was defending creationism, he's also a nice fellow.
@rey1454 thanks for the promo. I was intereviewed for 2 shows on Denver KLTT radio this morning. They'll be released over the next couple of weeks. I mentioned the stuff going on at MBC in one of the shows that will be aired as it relates to that little blurb where I said in the documentary that Lon Solomon's study of Enzymes led in part to his conversion to Christianity.
Why are the elders let this stupidity and control go on? I'm so disappointed with the elders of this church. David Platt should have not been in that position for as long as he was. Lots of these elders seems to have been attending the church since the 70s, 80s and 90s.
When i attended MBC in the early 2000s, the special needs ministry was one of the only ministires like it in the country and served families and people with disabilities incredibly well. MBC even hosted conferences where other churches came to learn and study how to do ministry to people and families with disabilities with the respect and love and thorough care. The fact that David Platt came in and dismantled so many ministries is deplorable. I attended the Church at Brook Hills when he first came to that church and he was a polished orator and did seem to do good by transitioning that church to an elder-led church, but it seems he's always been a polished speaker with an unbiblical agenda. It's hearbreaking to see how he destroyed much of MBC...using its size and success for his own gain and goals and not for the glory of God.
Whatever got the effete Andy Stanley and the melodramatic Craig Groeschel seems to have caught David Platt. Those fellows should be sociology profs at a junior college.
Our church, Wright Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach, has just gone through something very similar to what is in this documentary in how the leadership refused to answer questions. During the annual church meeting, questions were asked but, again, the leadership refused to answer. The church constitution stipulates that Robert's Rules for Parliamentary Procedures be used to conduct all official meetings. The most recent annual meeting these rules were completely ignored. Decisions were rammed through including placing family members of the senior pastor on the stewardship committee because he wanted a pay raise despite the fact that the giving would not support any raise. Those staff members who didn't "fall in lock step" were forced out and their reputations were denigrated, often in emails. Very sad situation.
One thing I didn't understand was who Dale Sutherland was. Was he an elder? Why did he suddenly seem to become a leading figure in getting the church to call David Platt as their new pastor? What was Dale Sutherland's past?
We don’t need preachers, we need shepherds. God, raise up men who will be so close to their people that Shepherds begin to smell like their sheep again. Acts 20:28
Acknowledging racism doesn’t make someone liberal. Denying racism reveals someone to be blind. But how we address it in the church should be to heal the divide; not stoke the flames and increase the divide.
It's also worth noting that David Platt was, and is still listed as a Council Member of The Gospel Coalition.
He is a keynote speaker for the 2025 TGC conference.

@@drjeremywilliams I've heard Platt has a questionable past with ministries he's headed.

But… but… white patriarchy! or something. 🙄
Should he have done the social injustice thing instead?
Oh my, is all I can say! Wolves in sheep’s clothing. The dishonesty and deceit is so disturbing.
David Platt is really good at trying to make people feel guilty.
Actually, I just read that book and expected he would be mentioned but if he was I missed it.
I missed that he is not mentioned in the book but was mentioned in a discussion. But he has behaved very badly and screwed the church where he was.
Frankly, I see both sides. I think it is good to introduce new initiatives while also being transparent with the congregation. This is why I have an issue with both congregant-ran churches and pastor-ran churches. There’s little room for authentic, healthy growth.
The main 🚩is the evading of questions and omitting important information (e.g. not admitting SBC-
affiliation).
If you have weak leadership then all kinds of leaven gets into the church.

This is very concerning and deserves a thorough response. We should be careful to come to swift judgments but also seek the truth for the glory of God and the good of His people.

It sounds like the Platt sins according to the former leaders of MBC who somehow were overrun:
- Platt’s first commitment was to the SBC, rather than to MBC.
Excellent and cogent summation!
But it’s so easy to be in a mega church. Satan loves those places.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely! So incredibly tragic to watch though. 😢
So much suffering- so much hardship for such a beautiful congregation. My heart is broken- Thank you for this Part 1. When will part 2 be released?
Thanks to Ray Fava at Evangelical Dark Web for the heads up on this documentary.
We need discernment and wisdom to prevent this from happening in other churches. Unbelievable!

Can you give 3 examples of where he twists?
I look forward to watching and learning. Knowing this was forthcoming I have some questions…
It’s my understanding that Lon Solomon signed a non disclosure agreement (‘NDA’) when he left MBC.
NDA to me almost always equal: shady crap went down
The wolf was let in and is devouring the sheep.

Why are the elders let this stupidity and control go on? I'm so disappointed with the elders of this church. David Platt should have not been in that position for as long as he was. Lots of these elders seems to have been attending the church since the 70s, 80s and 90s.
They were fooled and by the time some of them realized what was going on, David had them off the elder board replaced by his yes men.
I can’t even hear him preach he’s terrible. Totally narcissistic! I am so sorry about this happening to MBC.
The fact David platt if he did nothing else let Mike Kelsey preach when clearly he isn’t fit to preach shows David isn’t fit to be a pastor either.
Why isn't Kelsey fit to preach?
Do you get to determine who is and who is not fit to preach?
Tragically sad
Whatever got the effete Andy Stanley and the melodramatic Craig Groeschel seems to have caught David Platt.
Those fellows should be sociology profs at a junior college.
Maybe hiring a celebrity pastor wasn't such a great idea after all.
Why not?
The video storytelling doesn’t give us enough here about Sutherland to know what to do with him.
