My Dad in the 60’s lusted over a mk2 Jag but could only dream of affording one at the time. In 2001 just before he retired he bought himself a brand new Y reg 3.0SE almost identical to this one (Dad’s had beige leather) that he was intending to see out his driving days with, he felt like he had fulfilled a dream. He kept it for nearly 12 years & 160000 miles but towards the end it cost thousands to keep road worthy. New auto box & torque converter, new differential, new subframe & loads of other things but the dreaded tin worm finally killed it & he sold it for scrap. Good news is, he’s still driving today at 85 but in a forbidden fuel Renault Kadjar 😂 Another excellent review.
Yes sir, let us not discuss the forbidden fuel Renault... The rust does tend to be what kills these, sadly, I am not surprised that your father's one succumbed to it as well. Sounds like it started to get expensive, but that beige leather interior does sound most satisfying. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Change the transmission fluid at 60K, change the diff oil at 70k, repaint the underside including the rear sub frame as soon as you get it. Do not drive on salted roads, and always keep it on a trickle charger. If not you end up with the above, Scrap..
I drove one of these once. It was a 2.5 and felt slow and heavy. Of course I was used driving only Minis at that point. This one looks like a pre facelift which was quite critiqued at the time for not being Jag enough, particularly the interior. The post facelift was made quite a bit plusher. I quite like the styling when it came out but the Rover 75 looked quite similar and had a nicer interior.
Yes, a pre-facelift car, and the later ones do look considerably better with a much more up to date interior, but this is No Budget Reviews, and so something like this car (even if it is a bit too nice to be worth just £1000), is far more in keeping with the ethos that you can at least feel rich whilst not having spent a lot of money on your car at all.
Most agreeable Mr Lloyd, I do recall the S-Type being compared, with the Rover 75 at the time. The Rover 75 did win in terms of front-end styling, The rest of the Jaguar's proportions were pretty good.
Glad you enjoyed the video, sir! I have been waiting to do an S-Type for a long time, I am glad that I finally got round to it. The facelift did make the front end a bit smoother in my opinion.
@Lloyd Vehicle Consulting Yes, the face-lift did look much better, incredible the sat nav was still working. One does hope, an XJ40 will feature on the channel one day.
I recall that my brother-in-law acquired a brand spanking new S Type a matter of weeks after they were launched - a car so popular at that time that people would literally stop in the street to admire it! It was a nice car but the retro design trend didn't last however and now the S Type's retrogressive styling can be seen as a significant error in judgement. There is also something about that light colour wood employed in the interior of the early cars that always struck me as unappealing.
Yes, the facelifted ones look a bit better, but I think the 75 was more successful in terms of its styling in the end. The light wood would more suit a beige leather interior, I believe.
No timing belt / cambelts on S Types. All chain driven, thank goodness. Same as XJ's. Early S Types had 240bhp and were actually quicker 0-60 than later 02 onward models...6.9 sec. as opposed to 7.5 +.
The US market never received forbidden fuel engines, only the V6 and V8. We might have gotten a VDP (Vanden Plas), I'm not sure, I do know we got the Type R with the supercharged V8, which I believe was shared with Range Rover as well! Sat Nav a very rare option in US models! Jaguars depreciation has been very bad, losing its value over a period of a few years. I believe one can pick up an S-Type inexpensively, but maintenance is key, so it will be expensive, so it pays to know a Jaguar specialist or attempt to repair oneself!
That's absolutely correct, the V8 on these did eventually end up in the Range Rover L322. Jaguars do traditionally depreciate very badly, so it may be cheap to buy, but using a Jaguar specialist for maintenance would be absolutely recommended.
I had one of those ages ago Sir. A nice car indeed but terribly limited rear space. No timing belt on that one Sir. Just a chain. The forbidden fuel variation had the belts
As per your video description sir, I know this is the No Budget Review but "obscure in jokes" should surely be considered a factory standard issue sir? There's no budget reviews and then there's Ryanair Spec Reviews 😉 What a premium car for such a low budget though 😋
Sir, we did enjoy the luxury of this S-Type for not a lot of money. No Budget Reviews does contain far fewer jokes than Tweed Jacket Reviews, hence the disclaimer.
A Rover badge on the grill? 🤔 I don't mind these cars but I think they have aged badly in comparison to the 75. Even though they are cheap now I have heard they are seriously expensive to maintain.
Yes, I asked the owner about maintenance, and he said changing the spark plugs was quite difficult. He does have some interesting badges on the grille, doesn't he?
Good review Sir! One thing though. The AJV6 was timing chain, not belt.
Thank you, sir! I must have been thinking about the Ford Duratec V6, which is related to this.
Good Afternoon Sir. Jaguar goodness. Excellent 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, sir! More No Budget Reviews coming up this week.

Green Jag with a J Gate gearbox and V6 Powered.... Oh yes please sir, very appealing. Excellent review as always Sir
Sir we did very much enjoy this S-Type, with its lovely J-gate and the V6 engine.... Thank you, as always, for watching!

@@paulie-Gualtieri. , we do hope that an XJ40 will be offered at some point. The sat nav was amazing.

It was a really clean and complete car for its age and great spec.
@@paulie-Gualtieri. , I agree, sir!

Mike&Elvis had a Jaguar S-Type Type R with 200k miles on Wheeler Dealer's.
Did you enjoy the review?
Yes
A Very Fine Car.
Waft in leather interior.
Love the styling.
Sir, it would have been even better had the brakes not been a bit faulty, but as it was we still very much enjoyed it!
@@lloydvehicleconsulting I agree Sir. A very wise Truck driver once told me, "Indicators, you can manage without but brakes are kind of important. "
@@seancooke7332 , that sounds sensible to me, sir!
Put simply, I like Jaguars so, yes, it would do me nicely.
Glad you enjoyed it, sir!

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I was hoping to drive an S-Type R in April, but it broke down, sadly.

Yes, limited space in the back is a bit of a problem. Must have been thinking of the related Ford Duratec V6, which I believe does have a cambelt.
How can i hire you to get me one of these?
My e-mail address appears on screen in the first minute or so of the video.

If the jaguar on the bonnet is made of metal, I think that is illegal.
A lot of them seem to have an aftermarket leaper fitted for some reason.
