    I would add that mirror placement is critically important. Once I placed my mirrors as they should be, it made changing lanes so much easier.

      Very true. A lot of people neglect their mirror settings and they can make a huge difference in safety.

      My setting for side mirrors: just past the point of seeing your own taillight lenses.
      Old MotorCycle trick: watch the tires line up with the road striping. If they cross, look out and take evasive action.

      @@HowSkillsWould you still do shoulder checks if you have blind spot mirrors (SAE Side Mirror + Blind Spot Mirror pointing inwards)?
      Have you noticed that it might be more required only for the passenger side while on the driver side it is not generally required if you have the blind spot mirrors as the peripheral vision covers it?

    It's frightening to think that most drivers don't shoulder check when turning or changing lanes. It's the first skill that drivers lose after getting their license. Shoulder (head) checks will reduce the chances of colliding with other road users (especially cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcycle riders) when changing direction of your vehicle. Create this driving habit to be a safer, smarter driver. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I have been doing this for decades.... And on a multilane highway, I also check the trend in the lane on the OTHER side of the one I am moving into- MANY times this has saved me from a driver changing from the OTHER side of the lane I am going into! I always try to practice 360 observations when driving: when you are driving, you are responsible for ALL the cars around you, and paying attention to who is where, and how they are moving is very important- speed, direction, possible actions...

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  6 місяців тому +2

      Very good advice, and I agree that it's your responsibility to pay attention to all the traffic moving around you. It's important to keep scanning your mirrors, and looking into the other lanes behind and in front of you. Things can change very quickly in traffic.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  Рік тому +2

      It’s normally not necessary to reduce your speed when changing lanes, and instead, just continue on at your current speed. You might have to reduce your speed if you’re moving into a lane with slower moving traffic, but for the most part, it’s a smoother transition into the other lane if you just maintain your current speed.

    Do I shoulder check one or twice or what’s the right way for behind the wheel test? (CA)

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  3 місяці тому +1

      After checking your rearview mirror and side mirror, you would do one shoulder check, and then change lanes if the blind spot area was clear. If there was a vehicle in your blind spot when you shoulder checked, you would wait until the blind spot area was clear, then check your mirrors again, do another shoulder check, and then change lanes.

    Do you turn on turn signal then check mirrors and over shoulder?

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  Рік тому +2

      Yes, put on your turn signal first to let other drivers around you know what hat you’re intending to do. Then check your mirrors for traffic around you, and if they show you it’s okay to change lanes, then look over your shoulder to check your blind spot before actually making the lane change.

    In the UK, you have to check your mirror before signal which doesn't come natural to me

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  2 місяці тому

      I didn't know that about the UK. I prefer to have my signal on first, as an early warning to driver's around me that I'm about to change lanes.

    Should I turn on signal before I do checks?

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  2 місяці тому

      Yes, you should, as that lets other drivers around you know your intentions as soon as possible. After you do that, check your mirrors. Then do the shoulder check…that should be the last thing you do before you actually change lanes.

    why did you have to pull into the right lane after you got into the left lane ?

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  Рік тому +4

      That was only because that was the lane I needed to be in to make my next turn. In general though, it's also best to stay in the right lane so faster traffic can pass on the left.

    Never have I ever turned my head to look over shoulder. Mirrors only. Guess I've been lucky?? Recall from a defensive driving course instructed to position the mirrors such that full view of back and sides. Think the course made a point of never turning; always keep head facing ahead; use eyes only to shift field of vision. If you cannot see the mirros by shifting eyes only then the mirrors are not set properly. Thoughts?

    If there IS a car how do you know if it is a safe distance. This video half explained things

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  3 місяці тому +1

      If you look over your shoulder into the blind spot area and you see a vehicle there, then it’s not safe to move over. You’d need to wait to change lanes until that car passed you, and no other car was showing in your blind spot area, and there was no other car that you could see approaching close behind you in your rearview mirror. Or if you pulled far enough ahead of the other vehicle that you could see it in your rearview mirror, then it would be safe to pull over in the next lane.

      Yeah, I know what you mean. It can be easy to do that. Try to keep your shoulders pointing straight ahead, and make a quick turn of your head (and not your shoulders) to look into the blind spot area. You don't have to look but a second, and then turn your head forward and change lanes.
