If interchangeable lens, 5K resolution, hindsight feature, and front screen camera matters to you, pick GoPro 9 if not, stick to GoPro 8

Hello and thanks for the review! Both seem pretty comparable and I wouldn't upgrade to the 9 if I already had the 8. Considering I will be purchasing my first GoPro, would you suggest paying a bit more for the 9 or saving the money and going with the 8? Thanks!

Great to see the difference isn't too big. I think the 8 seems to be a better option for mainly action cam. Smaller and lighter

Great vid. So if this is my first time buying 1 of these, what do you recommend for one taking long bike rides in the counter side to catch the scenery? is 360 thing cool/useful i wonder? Oh and would you recommend getting a separate recording device to pin to shirt for audio on a bike?

I really appreciate this review. You are correct the differences are minimal and I think GoPro was banking on that front facing viewfinder and lens mount. But really, whos going to want to attach a larger lense because at that point you might as well use a DSLR. Very honest review, thanks!

Hello thanks for the great review at first. Then I am mainly filming Offroad footage on dash or outside vehicle mount . Hot and far from my face for long hours. Huge need for stabilizer

Hey Captin, what's a better value for the money. I don't need a horizon lock nor do I need a front screen. Any other reason to get the 9 over the 8? What's most important is image quality (24fps)and sound.
There isn't much difference... you can save yourself $100 and get the cheaper GoPro 8.
You might want to try horizon leveling in a HERO9. That provides a big improvement in stabilization.
Also, of course photos will look the same when viewed on a 4k/1080 screen, but what happens if you crop? That's what more photo resolution helps with (that and large prints, but few people print these days).

Thanks for this video. I use go pros mainly for time lapse stills and saw the 9 is much higher resolution. Why do you think the stills look so identical then?
probably because we didn't zoom in that much on them
Its really hard to decide, but I think the gopro 8 is for which is the best for enough stabilization, lowlight settings and wind noise reduction. Thanks for the honest review.

I think the video from GoPro 9 looks sharper and more detailed not as blurred as the 8 especially on the first of your takes where you were cycling.
Do you know if it is possible to use external microphones on the 9?

Hey, if you get the Media Mod for it (not available quite yet) you can use an external microphone with it. I will be getting that when it becomes available

Great review!! I wonder if it be worth to buy the 9 since I will be using it for adventure motorcycle rides, one single scratch on the GO PRO 8 LENSE and it's done there is no way to replace it... And yes I know you can place a protective thingy but that also messes a lil bit with video quality right!?
I mean...if you are already spending $300 on the 8...you might as well spend another $100 and get the latest one...

8:22 in them middle of both samples, there is a huge blurry region on the footpath. Do these cams really have this issue?

thanks for this video, im planning to buy hero 9 in the future but 8 seems to be ok for me aftr watching this. But i wanna ask too, how come i dont see too much step shaking when you where running than when you walked at night? i see your step movement.
I think gopros are mostly designed for more action... than just walking slowly filming... so that may have to do with the better stabilization when running vs walking
Its hard to see the quality difference in the video due to UA-cam compression
This is very true and I'm a videographer an audio engineer I have the GH4 4K in the original black magic and I've also messed with other 6K cameras trust me once you process that through DaVinci Adobe Premiere or any type of video editing platform and uploaded on UA-cam. Compression kinds of distorts the comparisons.
If you're going to spend the money I would say right now hang on to what you have
GoPro 8.

Hi.. I have one question. When we turn on front display and start vlogging, do we have option to turn off main back display? Or both display stay on all the time? This may save more battery. Thanks in advance.
No option to turn off the rear screen.

Great comparison, I've just purchased the GoPro 9, sold the 8, but i got a great price for the 9, £329 with a years subscription to GoPro with replacement cover if it gets damaged so worth it just for that, great vid

GoPro 8 with Bundle in $269? or go with the GoPro 9 alone in reg price? I just used a GoPro 2 like 2 years ago. I want to buy one. Mostly vlogging and travel videos

I think you will get pretty similar results with the GoPro 8 & The Media Mod. All the car and dash cam videos I made in the past year were filmed with the GoPro 8 and the media mod

I’m upgrading from a GoPro Hero + LCD ( I know really old) and I want to snowboard, play rugby and do time lapses with it, do you think it’s worth dropping for the 9 or would the 8 work just fine or even the 7. On my old Hero + I didn’t like the low quality with a max 1080 at 60 with no stabilization.
from the one you have any of them would be a massive improvement but the 9 will get better stabilization for what you plan on doing with it

I bought GoPro 8 last month and wondering to return and get Gopro9. Pricing is almost same both both here in netherlands with subscirption to Plus. You differ a lot than others and seem honest with review. Now I m in dilemma whether to return or keep Gopro8. I am not a avid video maker, but plan to start making videos on youtube on travel and food. Please advise. Also suggestion on good video edition software will be appreciated.

Great video, you helped me decide, i dont think the difference is worth spending the extra money and if your filming for youtube the compression will definately illiminate any visible differences, also is it any use filming in 5k if your older editing software wont support above 4k? Only deal breaker for me with the 8 is no removeable lens which means a total camera replacement is needed should you crack the lens tough choice but i think considering my uses for it im going put what i save not buying the 9 and buy the 8 with the media mod, thanks for the help
I've had every single gopro since the Gopro 2... and I never broke the lens on any of them :)

7:36 weird camera movements on the 9 when you were turning left, it stuttered 2 times(move stop move stop). after seeing all these comparison videos, it seems like there is no difference in hypersmooth stabilization between the 8 and 9 aside from the new horiontal leveling feature.
yes those stutters are very irritating
Go pro 8 less delay and looks natural movement when turning the camera.
I noticed the same. The 9 shows the image box the software uses for image stabilization.
True 8 > 9
Horizon levelling is probably only good feature, suggest you include that as well in comparison

Glad I found this. Im thinking the stabilisation of the 9 might be better for recording on a boat drifting as you tend to bop around and bit due to swell. But yer I dunno
I am going on vacation and was looking for a go pro to take with me with a back pack mount. Which would be the better one to get the 9 or the 8, honestly I’m looking at the 8 cause doesn’t look like there is much difference between the 8 to the 9 video wise.
Not much difference between the two. Even the GoPro 7 is really good for what you plan on using it for

Great review! I got exactly what I came to look for: honest and straightforward comparison with great examples. I have a GoPro 3+ black edition and haven't used it for years so I pulled it out to use it last week. Omg the pics turned out horrible. 🤣 Told my bf about it so he offered to get me the GoPro 8 for my bday. Can't wait to get it!

From the 8 there is no reason to upgrade :) Hopefully the 10 will bring some big changes
I do like the replaceable lens, and the max lens mod. Other than that though, the 8 is perfectly fine
What with image on a hero 9 at 3.37? it looks like the image colors become less contrast, post production issues? Or sensor bug?
The original footage that I watched before making the video looked better. There may have to do with the UA-cam video processing

3:19 great test when you were doing the Image Stabilization did you walk with your knee bend or like a ninja, which is the preferred way of walking specially when making broll videos. By the way I don't see much different with stabilization between 8 and 9.
