The reason I upgraded from the 8 to the 9, 1) front screen 2) removeable lens 3) bigger battery and 4) horizon stability mode, one of my favorite features
This is very true and I'm a videographer an audio engineer I have the GH4 4K in the original black magic and I've also messed with other 6K cameras trust me once you process that through DaVinci Adobe Premiere or any type of video editing platform and uploaded on UA-cam. Compression kinds of distorts the comparisons. If you're going to spend the money I would say right now hang on to what you have GoPro 8. 🤘😎
Its really hard to decide, but I think the gopro 8 is for which is the best for enough stabilization, lowlight settings and wind noise reduction. Thanks for the honest review.
I have the 8, and wouldn't change it with the 9 even just by paying the diference in its price. I upgraded my 4 silver with my 8 black and I'm very happy with it in all terms. Nitght time keep sadly being the weaker point of go pro.
3:22 hero 8 has more details/clear image and more real looking grass and sky, and i see texture of sidewalk ... wth ? good I don't need buy it now, but it will be difficult to choose...
The thing we don't know though is what level of sharpening he had in each camera. If they were mismatched, that may make a difference in perceived level of detail and texture
7:36 weird camera movements on the 9 when you were turning left, it stuttered 2 times(move stop move stop). after seeing all these comparison videos, it seems like there is no difference in hypersmooth stabilization between the 8 and 9 aside from the new horiontal leveling feature.
I think that GP8 gives more natural colors and doesn’t make overexposed images but GP9. Stabilization also felt smoother in several cases with GP8 for me.
You might want to try horizon leveling in a HERO9. That provides a big improvement in stabilization. Also, of course photos will look the same when viewed on a 4k/1080 screen, but what happens if you crop? That's what more photo resolution helps with (that and large prints, but few people print these days).
Redskull always has really dependable, side-by-side comparisons of these action cameras. At 3:47, you can see that the 9 has cropped much more of the image than the 8. Even taking into account that the cameras, which Redskull has mounted side-by-side, take a slightly different frame, you can see that the 9 has cropped much more of the same image than the 8. Both horizontally and vertically. Just a note: these cameras achieve image stabilization by cropping the image (i.e., using about 90% of the actual image). Using chip imbedded software, when camera movement is detected, the camera's image sensor used to record the image shifts in the opposite direction to compensate for the motion.
Both the GoPro Hero8 and GoPro Hero9 are excellent action cameras with advanced features. However, there are some key differences between the two models that may influence your decision. Resolution and Frame Rates: The Hero9 offers higher resolution options compared to the Hero8. The Hero9 can shoot up to 5K video resolution at 30 frames per second (fps), while the Hero8 maxes out at 4K/60fps. If you prioritize the highest resolution and frame rates, the Hero9 is the better choice. Front Display: The Hero9 introduced a front-facing color display, which is useful for framing shots when you're in front of the camera. This feature is not available on the Hero8. Battery Life: The Hero9 has a larger battery capacity than the Hero8, providing longer recording times. If extended battery life is important to you, the Hero9 has an edge in this aspect. HyperSmooth 3.0: Both cameras feature GoPro's image stabilization technology, but the Hero9 comes with HyperSmooth 3.0, an updated version that offers improved stabilization compared to the Hero8. Price: The Hero9 is generally priced higher than the Hero8 due to its additional features and improved specifications. Ultimately, the "best" camera depends on your specific needs and budget. If you prioritize the latest technology, higher resolution, and the front-facing display, the Hero9 would be the better choice. However, if you're looking for a more affordable option without compromising on quality, the Hero8 is still an excellent camera with impressive capabilities.
I disagree about the daytime video quality being slightly better on the Hero9. It has much worse clipping in bright areas as can be observed at 9:00. I thought the 8 had bad clipping but the 9 is even worse!
Hello and thanks for the review! Both seem pretty comparable and I wouldn't upgrade to the 9 if I already had the 8. Considering I will be purchasing my first GoPro, would you suggest paying a bit more for the 9 or saving the money and going with the 8? Thanks!
Hey Captin, what's a better value for the money. I don't need a horizon lock nor do I need a front screen. Any other reason to get the 9 over the 8? What's most important is image quality (24fps)and sound.
I really appreciate this review. You are correct the differences are minimal and I think GoPro was banking on that front facing viewfinder and lens mount. But really, whos going to want to attach a larger lense because at that point you might as well use a DSLR. Very honest review, thanks!
Just came across this video looking to get a go pro for some b roll and overhead footage! My husband has a 7 that I was using some and I’m debating between getting an 8 or 9! Great video!
I am very satisfied with GoPro hero 8 day time performance I shoot all my channel vlogs with it. I was expecting GoPro hero 9 to be performing better in low light conditions but unfortunately it doesn’t. I don’t think it’s worth upgrading.
9 seems to have slightly better wind noise reduction, better shadow detail, better colour gradient, better stabilization, less apparent sharpening etc. Low light is a mixed bag. Interesting. Thanks
The difference is the ISO. It's higher in the 8 so it looks brighter but not as clear. If you look at the lights you get more of a burst on the 8 vs 9. Regardless they are both bad and pulling out your GP at night is well desperate. Ha
I know I am so late to comment, but I am so appreciative of all the work you are doing on the reviews, because I know nothing about these things, and I often get caught up in the details that don’t matter; SO!.. to have you make it so much easier for me to understand what the difference,or significance of, any adjustment from generation to generation means- this is so so helpful. Thanks for this! You saved me money! The GoPro 9 looks the exact same as my GoPro 8 so there is no need to upgrade! I was already pretty happy with the GoPro 8
I have the 8 and live in Tahoe.. I will say the 8, at least mine, has a significant battery fail in cold temperatures. On a warm day, cold water doesn’t effect this... but on a snowy cold day, if I try a time lapse or just shoot video/pics and there is wind... a full battery will suddenly die and the GoPro will shut off. The battery will then be fine after getting home and warming it or taking it out.
Thanks for this video. I use go pros mainly for time lapse stills and saw the 9 is much higher resolution. Why do you think the stills look so identical then?
Great comparison. You talked about it, showed real situation clips. I couldn’t say thank you enough! You didn’t waste time and showed 4K@60FPS answered my biggest question was boost available on that and you said it was! Again great job comrade!
I've been using my Hero 8 for years now and I still enjoy it. I have lots of videos using hero 8 and posted on my UA-cam channel. And this morning, I was about to place an order for Gopro Hero 9 and its accessories but, I stop and ask myself if I need it? How can I assure that it has a big difference compare to hero 8? So I search on UA-cam and I saw this video. Thank you for sharing this video, I think I don't want to spend more money on hero 9, and it doesn't have a big difference compare to hero 8.
I just bought the GP8 a week ago and then GP9 come out. No regret at all because: 1. I don't need the 5k resolution ... who actually need 5k ? 2. I don't need front screen either ... adding more risk in action. 3. I don't like the size and the weight as a consequence of bigger battery capacity ... weight matters for fpv drone. 4. Web cam beta version ... not really needed 5. Similar video & picture quality. Horizon leveling ... hmm ... Those new features seems only suitable for general Vloggers. So for me the GP9 is more like Vlogger cam instead Action cam :) However I like the detachable lens because it's kinda feel more "safe" wise in case something wrong happen with the lens.
Can you tell please how much memory it consumes in 4k and 1080p and the video quality in these respective modes like normal video, time lapse, slow motion and others.
thank you for the video. I'm planing to buy a camera not upgrade and I think the Hero 9 is a better option for a new camera under 400€. I just want to know if you aggree
Very informative your video!! I would like to ask if the colors in go pro 9 recording at 5k are different when reconding at 4k? At 8:47 the colors look amazing when other footages at 4k they look over saturated
Awesome video and I liked the way you have shown the difference. Thanks for sharing the details. Is there any difference in the battery life between the two?
I was comparing the GoPro Hero 7 Black with the GoPro Hero 9 this afternoon and this evening, and I do not think it's worth upgrading. The 9 is much larger and heavier, which is not helpful for a portable action cam. Also, the difference in quality-- even when you compare the so-called 5k of the 9 with the 4k of the 7-- is negligible. Low light actually looks better on the 7.
At 7:34 where both cameras turn around the corner you can see that the hero 9 has some stutter to it. I'm not sure if that has changed in an update but that is not a good thing for a newer model.
Stick with the GoPro 8 if you have one already. I have an older Go pro that I purchased a few years back. I stopped using it because any newer phone has better quality. I just got the Go Pro Hero 9 so needless to say I was looking forward to the new camera. I found several issues with it. Corrupt files a few times. I cannot delete some of them on the memory stick, when I pressed the buttons to record the camera would shut down. I tried to transfer files over the phone and it would give me an error. I messed with the connection with no success. At times the camera was unresponsive. It just did not do anything and it got stuck on the mode screen I had to pull the battery. I really tried to give this a chance since I miss having an action camera I can setup on my helmet or take it paddle boarding but it is going back. Very weird to have these issues with such a popular camera I really wanted to use this again. The good news is that the return process is fairly easy. Going to give the Hero black 8 a chance next
GoPro 8 with Bundle in $269? or go with the GoPro 9 alone in reg price? I just used a GoPro 2 like 2 years ago. I want to buy one. Mostly vlogging and travel videos
You should mind if that image stabilization between the 9 and the 8 when filming is more likely a software version issue because from some users observations (including myself) the hero 8 had that 'clean movement' image of the hero 9 exactly one year ago and now it doesn't have it anymore. And Why? Because the manufacturer improved the software version from 1.5 to 1.6 and now it's even 2.0. Actually 1.5 was better image stabilization, it a clear steady movement like the hero9 right now. There was also a downside... the 1.5 still had more bugs to fix. Now the bugs on hero8 are fixed but the image is obviously 'damaged' compared to the 9. I really do not agree here with manufacturer's marketing views.... Also this lack of transparency about the software versions... when a new software version appears on a gopro camera all the previous are wiped out from the face of the earth... I think your observations are a little bit incomplete because on hero9 there is an obvious lens flare which hero8 did not have it that much. That is because the different lens coating construction on this part. I think on hero9 you could fix the issue with a good pack of filters, now you have more options because the longer neck... There should be more reviews about the lens flare on hero9 and how ugly that sometimes looks. I agree with you, these cameras should not be used in low light. The well mentioned one-inch-sensor is still missing! Actually sometimes hero8 even seemed to do better job. Definitely an iso setting difference there between the 9 and the 8! For what I said about the software difference between 1.5 and 1.6 there is the review of Oluvs Gadget from Austria. He explained the best way half a year ago how to things stand and why 1.5 is reliable for one good reason. But I will give you 10 more other reasons why it's not. :)) Cheers! Happy Holidays!!
I had the Hero 3+ Black when it was released. I bought the Hero 8 back in August at Costco. The difference was insane between the 2 cameras. When the 9 released immediately returned the 8. Footage wise they are very similar in your test but Favor the 9. I didn't like way the 8 pans back and forth when using Timewarp. Maybe it will be better in the 9? But, looking at the overall changes with the 9 like bigger batteries, front screen and removable Lenses. Its worth the upgrade if you need those features.
Yeah, the difference would have been massive between the 3 an the 8...not so much between the 8 and the 9 but since you could return the 8 it only makes sense to buy the 9
I think you will get pretty similar results with the GoPro 8 & The Media Mod. All the car and dash cam videos I made in the past year were filmed with the GoPro 8 and the media mod
Great comparison, I've just purchased the GoPro 9, sold the 8, but i got a great price for the 9, £329 with a years subscription to GoPro with replacement cover if it gets damaged so worth it just for that, great vid
I bought GoPro 8 last month and wondering to return and get Gopro9. Pricing is almost same both both here in netherlands with subscirption to Plus. You differ a lot than others and seem honest with review. Now I m in dilemma whether to return or keep Gopro8. I am not a avid video maker, but plan to start making videos on youtube on travel and food. Please advise. Also suggestion on good video edition software will be appreciated.
GoPro missed the only update really needed on the Hero 8. A larger sensor to be able to shoot cleanly in low light, under artificial light. For me the Hero 9 is therefore of no interest, as the video quality is similar (and bad indoors).
I do not have Gopro yet. Looking to get one. I guess for me the extra price is justified by bigger screen, front facing screen and bigger battery, even if the other internals were the same. Waiting for black friday and hope it will serve me well.
The thing is that gopro 9 is much heavier than 8, for me as an fpv drone pilot it is very important, i choose 8, it would be ideal for 9 to be like 5 session.Would be fantastic.
The 9 looks nice with the front screen but I'm holding onto my 8. Id wait for the Hero 10. It needs to have 8K, front wide screen, and support for 120fps at 4k for me to consider upgrading.
Thanks redskull for making this video, very well presented and clear. From what I observed : 9 had better sound, was softer and more processed than the 8 including redskulls voice and the background noise water for eg, it was just more blended in well, whereas sometimes the voice & background sounds could seem harsher on the 8 9 had more saturated colour than the 8 which was nice in a few places and 8 was better in others OIS is almost the same in both but I felt the 9 was little bit better for rapid movement. I was in 9 until Nightime when I got mind blown and suddenly considered 8. Cuz 8 is the clear winner here! Image quality is almost the same overall except for the greens being more enhanced in the 9 than the 8 I'm terms of sharpness 9 sometimes doesn't do well as the 8 who's clearly the winner here The grip for the 9 is supposedly better and thicker to hold where the 8s can seem slippery. That's all I know so far Thanks for reading !
In my opinion the 8 sounds less muffled than the 9. Both of these cameras seem like they're pretty much the same, but one has 5k capability and the other one doesn't. If you're on a budget and don't plan on using 5k which kills battery quicker and may be unnecessary, then go for the 8.. I personally don't think the 9 is necessarily better than the 8 overall. Just my opinion tho. I'm probably gonna go for the 8 after watching this! Why spend that much more if you don't have to?
Just bought the GoPro 8 after watching your video. To me the GoPro 8 video looked better than the 9. the sound was the same. The 5k on the 9 didn't look as good to me as the 4k video on the 8. image stabilizability looked almost the same not worth the 100.00 difference. I got the Goro 8 black bundle on Amazon Prime Day for 274.00 after tax and discounts. that savings alone paid for my 1 years membership. wow, what a deal. If you're reading this on 6-21-2120, you can go to amazon right now with prime membership and get the same deal.
I've watched many of your videos and you always provide useful information (THANKS) I'm considering buying a GOPRO but one important (to me) real life spec was missing. What I like about your video... 1. You talk about the things that are important to MOST user (except one) 2. Great video/audio comparisons What you missed however.... ... since the 8 and 9 have different batteries.... HOW LONG TO THEY LAST? (big miss, but maybe just an oversight, happens to us all)
I just may watch this again, but seeing your comparison video footage here. It seemed as though the 8 was better at most comparisons. To me it seemed the 8 has better stabilization, it seemed smoother in your video anyway. I thought the clarity to be better on the 8 also. Although their were a couple shots that were better clarity wise on your hero9. And I have read & heard many times that the gopros are no good for nighttime darker footage but in your video comparison the 8 was a bit brighter than the 9 was for sure. The bigger battery on the 9 is nice. And I am sure a lot of people will like that they brought the removable lens back. For me though, I definitely see no need to buy the 9.
Hi Alex I think the video from GoPro 9 looks sharper and more detailed not as blurred as the 8 especially on the first of your takes where you were cycling. Do you know if it is possible to use external microphones on the 9? Kind regards
Hey, if you get the Media Mod for it (not available quite yet) you can use an external microphone with it. I will be getting that when it becomes available
Great vid. So if this is my first time buying 1 of these, what do you recommend for one taking long bike rides in the counter side to catch the scenery? is 360 thing cool/useful i wonder? Oh and would you recommend getting a separate recording device to pin to shirt for audio on a bike?
From what I’ve seen here, I don’t see a valid reason to spend that much more for the Hero 9. Thanks for the review
Agreed, Thanks for watching!
That much more? it's almost double the price here in India
@@meenapundir4005 yes🤣🤣🤣
indeed hardly any improvement globally. (awesome tests!!)
If interchangeable lens, 5K resolution, hindsight feature, and front screen camera matters to you, pick GoPro 9 if not, stick to GoPro 8
Great to see the difference isn't too big. I think the 8 seems to be a better option for mainly action cam. Smaller and lighter
and its cheaper
@@Luckyclash yeah and we honestly couldn't tell the difference 👏👏🤣
The reason I upgraded from the 8 to the 9, 1) front screen 2) removeable lens 3) bigger battery and 4) horizon stability mode, one of my favorite features

Its hard to see the quality difference in the video due to UA-cam compression

And that’s the thing to think about as most of the videos will end up on UA-cam.
Go pro 8 less delay and looks natural movement when turning the camera.
I noticed the same. The 9 shows the image box the software uses for image stabilization.
True 8 > 9

Horizon leveling ... hmm ...
Those new features seems only suitable for general Vloggers.
So for me the GP9 is more like Vlogger cam instead Action cam :)
However I like the detachable lens because it's kinda feel more "safe" wise in case something wrong happen with the lens.
just buy GoPro subscribtion and if something happens to your lens they will replace the camera.
Thank you for this information. I don't think the improvements are related to the higher price.
You should also check out the Osmo Action 3. I posted a video on the action 3 an hour ago
@@RedskullPro Ok, I'll go check it out. Does the GoPro 9 have a GPS?
Very informative your video!! I would like to ask if the colors in go pro 9 recording at 5k are different when reconding at 4k? At 8:47 the colors look amazing when other footages at 4k they look over saturated
Great video! Exactly what I needed to see
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent review thank you for your work!
Awesome video and I liked the way you have shown the difference. Thanks for sharing the details.
Is there any difference in the battery life between the two?
In US go pro 8 and 9 is only $50 difference, I will buy 9 for sure
Thanks for the awesome review. You really showed that there isn't much of a big difference in the 8 and 9. Definitely helped me save some money.
Glad it was helpful!
this is a good comparison except that the horizontal leveling feature of the gopro9 was not mentioned
Go pro 8 still good seems like. Except gp8 dont have the front screen.
for that price, I can buy an attachable LCD screen for the 8 (bigger inch to see myself clearer).
Finally a review I can trust. Thanks
Look who's here! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the vid... you really worked the 8 &9 side by side for comparison. You helped me make my choice.
Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. Take care.
5k just a bug and unnecessary option in GoPro 9 but Value for money is GoPro 8 ,🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍btw good comparison redskull👍👍
GoPro 8 with Bundle in $269? or go with the GoPro 9 alone in reg price? I just used a GoPro 2 like 2 years ago. I want to buy one. Mostly vlogging and travel videos
I think the gopro 8 will give you way more value for your money!
Do you think it's better to get the max or the 9? I am stuck on which one to get.
Yeah, the difference would have been massive between the 3 an the 8...not so much between the 8 and the 9 but since you could return the 8 it only makes sense to buy the 9
Redskull please suggest me, i do not have any camera for my vlogging, should i buy hero 8 or 9 , please do reply 🙏
I think you will get pretty similar results with the GoPro 8 & The Media Mod. All the car and dash cam videos I made in the past year were filmed with the GoPro 8 and the media mod
@@RedskullPro Thanks For the reply 👍
it was a very good review, thanks man
Thanks for checking it out!
Keep it man
GoPro missed the only update really needed on the Hero 8. A larger sensor to be able to shoot cleanly in low light, under artificial light. For me the Hero 9 is therefore of no interest, as the video quality is similar (and bad indoors).
Yeah, I was really hoping they would have a larger sensor in this one... as you said it is unusable in low light...maybe next year
Nice and honest review. Well done! Keep the good work up
Thanks a ton!
The difference is wide angle is much improved in gopro 9 and secondly is 5k
Interesting viewing. Are there any comparable or better alternatives to the Go Pro s available?
I do not have Gopro yet.
Looking to get one.
I guess for me the extra price is justified by bigger screen, front facing screen and bigger battery, even if the other internals were the same.
Waiting for black friday and hope it will serve me well.
Merci pour ta vidéo! Ça ma aidé pour mon choix
Thanks, buddy! This video saved me 99 bucks.
Obrigado! Me salvou 99 pratas.
Thank you for this video. Very helpful.
You're very welcome!
Thanks redskull for making this video, very well presented and clear. From what I observed :
9 had better sound, was softer and more processed than the 8 including redskulls voice and the background noise water for eg, it was just more blended in well, whereas sometimes the voice & background sounds could seem harsher on the 8
9 had more saturated colour than the 8 which was nice in a few places and 8 was better in others
OIS is almost the same in both but I felt the 9 was little bit better for rapid movement.
I was in 9 until Nightime when I got mind blown and suddenly considered 8. Cuz 8 is the clear winner here!
Image quality is almost the same overall except for the greens being more enhanced in the 9 than the 8
I'm terms of sharpness 9 sometimes doesn't do well as the 8 who's clearly the winner here
The grip for the 9 is supposedly better and thicker to hold where the 8s can seem slippery.
That's all I know so far
Thanks for reading !
Thanks for sharing with everyone!
Plus Amazon got a sale on it
Just bought the GoPro 8 after watching your video. If you're reading this on 6-21-2120, you can go to amazon right now with prime membership and get the same deal.
was waiting for this video for last 3 days
yeah...UPS screwed me over :( supposedly the truck broke down
I've watched many of your videos and you always provide useful information (THANKS)
I'm considering buying a GOPRO but one important (to me) real life spec was missing.
What I like about your video...
1. You talk about the things that are important to MOST user (except one)
2. Great video/audio comparisons
What you missed however....
... since the 8 and 9 have different batteries....
You Mean Sir The Best is Go pro hero8 right?
I don't buy the hero9 right
Gopro8 is very nice you mean Sir Go pro hero8 is the best to buy right?
Hi Alex
I think the video from GoPro 9 looks sharper and more detailed not as blurred as the 8 especially on the first of your takes where you were cycling.
Do you know if it is possible to use external microphones on the 9?
Kind regards
Hey, if you get the Media Mod for it (not available quite yet) you can use an external microphone with it. I will be getting that when it becomes available
Me: *Pauses at **1:10*
Pam Beesly: It's the same picture!
:)
If you don’t have a GoPro and your buying one which one do you recommend?
Please tell me is there any stuck issue or freezing or connectivity issue in hero 9?(after update)
It did freeze twice when I had the media mod on it
@@RedskullPro ok. So no other problem
Great vid. So if this is my first time buying 1 of these, what do you recommend for one taking long bike rides in the counter side to catch the scenery? is 360 thing cool/useful i wonder? Oh and would you recommend getting a separate recording device to pin to shirt for audio on a bike?
If this is your first buy,gp9 may sound good.
Great video and I agree with the conclusion, greets from Edmonton AB!
Thanks for watching! Did you see the GoPro 9 vs iPhone 11 that I filmed in AB?! ua-cam.com/video/B0Y09AWg8WU/v-deo.html
this helped me, thank you very much !
