Thank you. Many other people have posted videos about sportster oil changes. Your's is the first one that shows how to get the bubble out of the line. They all refer to it, but don't show it. From their descriptions, I was shaking my head. Now I get it.
Harley Davidson Softail Slim Service Series-Oil Change ua-cam.com/video/KZAA4OFeCAQ/v-deo.html. This video has all three oil changes on the softail pretty similar to the sporty.
Good video. Going to check your channel now because I'd like to see the primary oil change as well. My plan is to change it at every oil change interval.
Tony, another good one! I too wasn't aware of the possible bubble in the line so I will be using that tip during my next oil change. I'll to do as much work on my bike as possible myself, your tips are a huge help. Thanks again, I'm really enjoying your channel. Still watching the older ones, trying to get caught up.
Glad I watched this video. I just got a 2007 sportster 883 low last week, has 3k original miles on it and looks and runs like new. However I didnt get any service history so wasnt sure if it had fluids done at the required 1k mile interval. Also wasnt sure at which point in the last 12 years it did the majority of its sitting. According to the title it had 1700 miles a year ago so looks to of been riddin 1300ish miles since then. When I looked at the oil on the dipstick it was very clean in appearance so I assumed it had just been changed. After watching , i went back to the bike and actually felt the oil and noticed it had a bit of a gritty feeling as well as shearing the same when separating the fingers. Definetly odd to see it look clean but feel used like that. Guessing it maybe was changed at 1k miles and now at 3k it appears clean but it's now 2k mile old oil. I'm definetly going to change fluids before its parked for the winter now that I've actually felt the old oil. As you mentioned oil is a touchy subject for any bikes, I had planned to run synthetic after many suggestions but also told to just run the regular hd oil as well. I will be going to my local dealer tomorrow and seeing what they actually have on the shelf. Already have 4 quarts of Mobil 1 vtwin but may return and run something else. Probably the best simple oil change video I've seen yet.
Thanks for watching Jordan. Synthetic will increase the valve noise on the top end a little. Plain old oil will run quieter you just have to change more often. Congrats on the bike ride safe!
@@TonysGarage Valve train noise seems to be the only complaint about synthetic I've read about while cooler running temps is the benefit along with longer change intervals. Oddly enough some have reported quieter running motors with synthetic, others louder. Its weird how every bike seems to be a bit different. I think the deciding factor will be what harley has for prices for their conventional hd360 20w-50 oil. If it's the same price as the mobil i already have I'll stick with mobil 1. I do want to get a quart of forumla+ for the primary however. I normally change every 3k miles anyway so I'll be good with conventional or synthetic. Look forward to tackling this job.
The filter definitely needs to be a little more than hand tight. Snug it up just a little with the ratchet. If you don't, it WILL come loose, and you will lose all your oil, and destroy your engine. I use foil instead of cardboard for the oil filter. If you use cardboard, use THIN cardboard, like from a cereal box. Whether you use foil of cardboard, leave it in place until after you install the new filter. I saw oil dripping from the engine after he removed the cardboard. The goal should be to not spill a drop on the engine. But if you do, use some spray brake or carb cleaner to clean it off. You can also use some gasoline in a spray bottle. It's cheaper and will dissolve oil. Don't start the engine with oil on it. When you pour oil into the filter, do not pour too much. It will run out while you are installing the filter. Not a huge deal IF you left the foil or cardboard in place to catch it. When pouring new oil back into the tank, put three full quarts. Not two, not two and a half. Three full quarts. The oil capacity of the Sportster EVO engine is 3.6 quarts. If you do happen to get a tiny bit to much in, it can easily be removed with a gear oil pump, or even a turkey baster. Better too much to start with than not enough, as not enough will destroy your engine. Your final oil level should be about 1/16" below the maximum line. You want as much oil as you can get in it without overfilling it.
I bought an old Sportster that's been sitting for an unknown amount of time. It won't start. Can I change the fluids before I get the motor started just to be safe? Or is it important to be able to have the motor run first?

Except the sporty doesn’t have a separate transmission hole.

Finally! The right way to do it! Thank you!!!
Thank you glad it helped
Would this oil change be done the same for a 2005 Sportster 1200?
Great video! Just did my 06 1200 L with help from this video and was easy peasy lemon squeezy thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
I'm looking to learn how to maintain my 2015 883 iron xl it has never been worked on has 950 miles

Good video - are you saying at 1500 miles the oil was worn out?
Not at all.
hi tony, great video very helpful, i got a questiion, how often do i need to change the sparkplugs?
Harley suggests every 15,000 I believe. I usually swap mine out at 10k.
@@TonysGarage thanks
Im loving the vids!
Are you in kentucky?
Yes sir, Louisville
Oh cool, im from Louisville, i live in Lexington now!
Awesome video but do you check your oil level with the bike leaning to the left or on the stand or you check the oil with the bike standing straight?
No, it has to be on the jiffy stand for an accurate reading. Ride safe.
@@TonysGarage thank you.

I would change all the fluids first just to be on the safe side of things.
I change my oil quite often also
good video
K&N filters have a ratchet drive attached. No need to buy a filter wrench
You need to say "alright guys" one more time.
Alright guys
You could learn a lot about oils if you wanted to.
Every 1500 miles??? Can I have your oil, that's good for another 3500....
I know, I change my oil way to soon.
