The Foundation Matters: Utilizing Pavers and Sand for Ground Preparation!

  • In my latest project, I tackle the task of preparing the ground foundation for my pool using pavers and sand.
The process begins with careful consideration of the pool manufacturer's recommendations. Understanding that the liner will be set up over the sand portion, and the frame will rest on the pavers, I prioritize creating a solid foundation. Following the pool's guidelines of having a 15" x 15" solid surface under each frame support, I opt for pavers sized approximately 16" x 16" to meet these requirements.
Once the pavers are chosen, I proceed to level the ground and lay them out accordingly. Ensuring each paver is properly aligned and securely in place is crucial for establishing a stable base for the pool frame.
Next, I spread sand over the designated area where the pool liner will rest. This layer of sand provides a supportive and level surface for the liner, enhancing the overall stability of the pool structure.
Join me as I demonstrate how to lay pavers and sand for a reliable pool foundation. Whether you're setting up a new pool or renovating an existing one, this DIY approach ensures a sturdy and long-lasting foundation. Let's dive in and get started on building the perfect base for your pool!
Whether you are laying pavers for a pool, patio, or a fire pit, the basics are the same.
    1. Level the ground
    2. Compact the ground
    3. Add a layer of Paver Base Sand
    4. Level and compact the Base Sand
    5. Add 1" layer of Paver Leveling sand (Do not step on or compact this)
    6. Lay your pavers
    7. Hammer or stomp the pavers into the sand
    8. Make sure the pavers are level before continuing
    9. Brush in Polymer Locking Sand
    10. Stomp the pavers
    11. Repeat steps 9 & 10 two more times to ensure the sand has worked its way in between the pavers
    12. Apply water to activate the polymer locking sand
For the pool liner portion, you want to compact the sand a few times.
Using the back side of a broom to scrape the sand to help it fill in any holes or divets. Brush the area and compact. Make sure this area is level!!!

Love the videos. Your way of describing all the steps is really helpful.
If I may make one suggestion…. The video title with “Carly tackles…” at the start means when UA-cam abbreviates it, a lot is cut off the end. I’m not sure it’s needed as ‘Carly tackles..’ being the channel name is prominent the whole time.
Can’t wait for more videos. You’re really good at this.

Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for the title suggestion, I may do that with future videos.

that tiller shook some molars didn't it?. I certainly admire the patience you showed in leveling that sand and like your paver pattern. I'm glad I don't have a pool so I would think I have to tackle this! Love those dogs.

Oh yeah, that tiller was working hard. The ground is a hard clay here, the upper body takes a beating. I want to say moving and leveling dirt took a few weeks with rain causing some delays. But rain helps pacts the soil, so it was a good thing too.

Can the pool be moved once is set up but still empty? Can I drag it empty?

For setup- you are going to want to allow for room to work and fully extend the u frames. The manual says the frame (when setup) will stick out an extra foot making your total pool dimension 10’ x 19’. I would allow for more room. If I could do it over, i would extend that paver width - my length was fine. The frame needs to hit the center of the support- ours ended up hitting the outside edge of pavers and it caused them to shift.

Not easily. There is weight but the problem is more with the frames. They don’t support the pool well until water is it. They are going to fall in or out when you move it and will need to be setup again. The frames stand and extend to their proper place once filled with water.

This is great. Thank you. Did it hold up well to the pool over the summer? Anything you'd change?

I would have made it wider. I needed the pool frame (legs) to hit the middle of the pavers, and they were too close to the edges - which caused some pavers to shift. I didn't really have the problem with length because I had made it extra long.

What do you do when you take down the pool? How do you cover the sand? I have a small backyard and the same size pool, live in northeast, so wondering how I could utilize the area for the other 9 months of the year.

Take down is a bit more work than setup. Drain the pool, wipe it all down while some water is still on the pool. I use a mildew spray lightly applying to my rag, probably diluting a bit in water. Then i rinse all out my rag and rinse the sides and bottom again, wiping again. That might be a bit over the top. I will use a utility pump to help get remaining water out of the pool and then use a wet shop vac to suck up as much as i can. I let it dry. Then take down the sides. Before folding the liner, we made sure it was dry and used talcum powder and coated the whole thing so it wouldn’t stick to each other. It made setting up the pool so much easier this year. We wish we would have used more talcum powder on the poles during setup last year so we made sure we coated the poles really well.
We washed all of the hoses and made sure they were all dry before packing. We emptied the sand in the filter and cleaned it up.
In terms of the ground, i left the ground tarp over the sand and placed pavers as weight to keep it down while waiting for snow to fall. The tarp that comes with the pool was not heavy dirty enough to support this, especially with high winds. I ended up buying another tarp. The tarp did a good job of keeping the sand in the pool area and not letting it blow. everywhere. Because it is work to smooth it out and level it, i didn’t walk on it or do anything in that area.
If you really wanted to use that space i would think a ground tarp would help keep sand from leaving the area while you walked on it and did other things.
You could also cover it with some s bit more solid, with what would depend on your climate and how much you are willing to spend to re-use the space
      Hope this helped.

Hope you can help. I’m just looking to make a patio just big enough to fit the 18x9 intex pool with support legs. What are the dimensions I should be digging up? Exactly 18x9 or bigger? Thanks!

    • @carlytackles
      @carlytackles  2 роки тому +2

You are going to need to be bigger. The frame required 19’ x 10’. You may want to go a tad bigger if you are doing a concrete pad or pavers, it would be alot of weight on the outside edge that cause concrete to crack or pavers to flip.
