  • The rehabilitation of the ancient port was completed in the early 1990s on the surface of what was once the heart of port activity - the kingdom of the camalli (camallo, a Genoese term of Arabic origin, was the unloader or porter working on ships in the port of Genoa) which were part of the Compagnia dei Caravana (The Compagnia dei Caravana was an ancient guild of workers in the port of Genoa) - and which had remained virtually unused for many decades. Today its descents, which follow each other without interruption, even if they assume different names, make up the Area of the Old Port, a vast area overlooking the sea which houses, in addition to the aquarium, numerous points of artistic, museum and tourist interest , fair and entertainment, on an area of over 230,000 square meters. The affected area extends in length from Piazza Cavour to Ponte Parodi and is bordered, on the upstream side, by the elevated road.
    Among the attractions of the ancient port:
    - The Genoa Aquarium which houses around 6,000 specimens of 600 different marine species;
    - The biosphere is a glass and steel sphere located in the sea next to the aquarium. It houses butterflies, iguanas, ferns and various species of tropical plants that manage to live thanks to a particular automatic arrangement that of the curtains placed on the internal walls of the sphere allow the penetration of an adequate level of solar heat from the outside;
    - The Bigo is a modern metal monument that reproduces on an enlarged scale a large loading crane like those mounted on ships. Its base is in water. Its structure supports a large circular and rotating panoramic lift that allows you to enjoy a 360° panorama of the port area from a height of about 40 metres;
    - Porta Siberia is a gate that was part of the sixteenth-century walls built between 1551 and 1553 by Galeazzo Alessi. It was the access gate to the Molo Vecchio, built as an extension of the Mandraccio, the peninsula used in ancient times as a natural landing place. It seems that the term derives from cibaria since foodstuffs that arrived by sea and those departing destined for other ports of the Mediterranean passed through this opening;
    - The Cotton Warehouses are a building from the early 1900s which was used for the storage of goods. Today there are shops, bars, the cinema multiplex, cultural and recreational facilities;
    - The Millo building, built in 1876, houses restaurants, bars, shops and the Genoese headquarters of Eataly.
    The Darsena effectively closes the old port to the west. Besides the dry docks, it houses small fishing boats. Adjacent to the Galata − Museum of the Sea is the Nazario Sauro submarine-museum (S 518) anchored there. The Neptune is an imaginative, full-scale, seaworthy (maximum speed of 5 knots) reconstruction of an ancient pirate vessel built as the main set for Roman Polański's film Pirates. The ship can now be visited by the public and is moored next to the aquarium.

    Love the dog (19.26) and the Chiesa Di San Marco Molo, the best. Otherwise, "Ports" are not my choice. Filmed with passion, as always, Massimo. There's no stopping your enthusiasm whatever your choice of subject, even if the Chiesas and Basilicas are always my best choice...
