A special event station can provide significant exposure for amateur radio as well as the event being celebrated.
In July 2022, the Ducks on the Air ham radio club at the University of Oregon ran a special event for the World Athletics Championships, being held at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
Running a special event was a first for the club, and for nearly every club member and volunteer operator who participated.
We discuss why we wanted to do it in the first place, our goals, whether or not we were happy with the results, what went right and what went wrong, and how we would do it if we had another opportunity.
We discuss how we obtained permission to run the event, why we decided to use the club's N7DUX callsign instead of a 1x1 special call, and how we pulled off an operation encompassing 30 volunteer operators, 225 hours, and the nearly 100,000 square miles within the borders of Oregon.
We hope that this presentation can serve as validation and encouragement for those wishing to do something similar, and that our experiences might help to provide guidance to others.
