    I tried using silicon end cap glued together PVC gutter with dow corning silicon. It was good to seal, but water leak somewhere is not guaranteed always. So I tried using 2mm thick black PVC plate, cut and glue with PVC glue directly. The only negative effect is that I can not open to clean the pipe. So I upgrade again, using rectangular shape PVC gutter with top cover. I can pull up the cover and clean inside even I glue the both ends permanently.

  • @gregm8941
    @gregm8941 2 роки тому +13

    Here is a much cheaper idea. You could use a router or a trim router with a pattern bit. Trace the outside of the down spout onto a 3/4 inch piece of plywood. Cut out a whole the shape of the downspout. Now use the router with a pattern bit to cut a groove that matches the shape of the downspout into a piece of PVC board that you can buy at Home Depot. You can get the same result without the need for a CNC machine.

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  2 роки тому +6

    I bought some of those end caps and tried to install them with PVC pipe cement. It leaked. So I used Flex Seal to plug up all the leaks and it worked like a champ. Your silicone caulk should work as well. The main problem is positioning the plug so you can apply the caulk or the sealant. I found that super glue did the trick of holding the plug in place while you apply the sealant, and it worked very well. I've been leak-testing four of the plugs for several days and there are no leaks at all.
    I am moving the downspouts into a front bedroom with a large window with a southern exposure. I should be able to grow food all winter there.
    You might consider making a donation to Karen's company. She gave me a link to make a donation that made it very easy.

      I hope you don't mind me jumping in here but I bought the 5500 lumin LED shop lights from Walmart and some from sams club ($23 and $19.99 respectively) for sprouting all my seedlings in spring well I started watching Mike here last winter right about the same time I was starting my seeds.
      Well putting 2 and 2 together and cutting a free downspout from my daughters junk pile I now have a lovely LED/downspout garden in the house! I have lettuces and baby boc choi and a nice Japanese leaf cabbage going. I moved them out side for summer and I'm gearing up to bring them in for winter.
      My hubby does the nerdy math and said it costs less than $4 a month for all 4 of my LED lights on timers !
      So if you can save up a few bucks grab an LED shop light you can boost the light needed for your plants. I've tried just southern exposure in my windows and they get kinda leggy.
      Just throwing this out there cuz I didn't have enough money to go expensive but the $23 -5500 lumin lights are working wonderfully for me. They are on chains and adjust up and down too.
      Happy growing.

    I'm thinking these can be put inside my windowsill this winter?
    The old style ones I'll still leave outside. I found a microgreens mix at dollar tree and grew out mibuna and mizuna mustard in my downspouts this year. I hadn't tried those before and the small plants did awesome in the system!
    I'm so glad you do this!!

      They look like they would fit perfectly on a fairly wide sill. I have some sills that are 6” wide with Southern exposure and that’s where I started my seeds for planting outside last winter.

    You're right. That "bending/melting end" was a "deterrent". Been using tubs but I'm running out of room on my tent floor.. These smaller ones I could place on my shelves next to my tent, already measured & they fit with room to spare.

    My first time watching one of your videos, great job! I'm just starting to learn about building and starting a hydroponics garden. Looking for a design and material that works for me. As a plumber for 32 years, I naturally thought I'd go with schedule 20 pvc pipe setup. Then I remembered that pvc is a very toxic plastic. Pvc glue and cleaner, along with silicone caulking, are things I don't really want my food growing in. Am I being paranoid? It probably won't leach in but I think I'm gonna try a food grade 5 gallon bucket tower

    I would just get those caps injection molded if the quantity being sold is high enough to justify the initial mold cost. The caps would then be very fast and cheap to make. 3D printing, routing and DIY thermo molding are great for prototyping, but when you need big volume and low cost then nothing beats injection molding.

    Since water is self leveling, why not drill a 1" hole in each end cap and install a plumbing fitting so that a submersible pump from a bucket to the top level and when full it will drain down to the next and so on until all are getting water.
    You could even use a small solar panel with a submersible pump, so the last trough drains back to the bucket. When the sun goes down, the pump stops, sunrise it starts again. watering made simple.

    I just bought hydroponic nutrient solution and the instructions say to change out the water weekly. If I set it and forget it using Kratky method, will the water go bad if I leave the plant in the same nutrient solution for the life of that plant? I used a 1 gallon container for lettuce and 5 gallon bucket for pepper

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  2 роки тому

      I do not change my weekly. The lettuce should not have to be changed, just topped off. You will have to watch the pepper plant as it can live several years. In the Kratky system, sooner or later things will go astray.
