Thank you for your video. New sub. I am growing jujubes in containers from trees of antiquity, second year. (Zone 9 a.) I'm trying to figure out what to do with the root suckers and if I should try to do some grafting and rooting cuttings, just for kicks. I'm going to check out your other videos. I am also growing fuyus, but they don't seem to be as vigorous for me. I hope you continue to post more videos on these trees; appreciated 👍.

Thank you for the info. How big are your containers? Jujube's tend to root out like Mulberries and I am interested to know how often you need to replant in containers. Personally, I would leave one root sucker to help pollinate the main tree, but cut it down each year to 6 in, so it doesn't get big. If you do root cuttings from the suckers I don't think you will get the same type of fruit. My root suckers fruit is really inferior to the main tree, but it would be worth a try. You are right, Fuyu's are not as vigorous as Jujube. Good luck!!

@@flackfruit my containers are about half barrel size, 25gal? This is their second year. Lang and Li are fruiting the best. Cut bees defoliated them in the spring, but they bounced back. I would like to try to root the suckers then graft cuttings on them (never did it before). I'm going to really cut them back this winter. I'm not sure how often to repot them, maybe 3 yrs. Maybe trim the roots back and treat them like bonsai. My bare root persimmons were so stubborn, I had to sweat them to get them to leaf out. I'm treating them with root stimulator every 4 weeks, they tend to wilt. Always learning.

I will work on that. I do have some other videos on the Jujube post pruning and how well it fruited. It is on my channel. Thanks for watching.

I came to find out that regardless of how much you take off. The tree will grow back with a vengeance the following summer. At least that's been my experience with a six year old Lee. I cut 50% and it grew back about 60%.

So true, that is why I cut it back each year so it doesn't get too big (12 ft max) but I get a lot of fruit. Maybe one year I will not prune it and see what happens.

Good info here. We’ve got a Li in East Mesa, AZ zone 9b. They love our heat, and humidity that’s created with the microclimate we’ve created. How do you like your fruit? Right off the tree, or when they shrivel up like dates?

That is great, yes AZ is a great place to grow it, same with here, but less humid. I love the fruit, I have multiple videos on it because I love it so much. I now have 4 varieties and will be getting two more. This year they hardened pretty fast, they were great fresh (just turning brown, or before shriviling) but I have about 1000 that are dried and they are too dry. So I need to figure out a better way to preserve them, especially since we don't have humidity here and they are sugar cane small fruit. Almost not worth it dried IMO.

I like your pruning skill. Could you make a video on fruit production of this year?

I just posted one. Fruiting wont start until next month. I will make one on the actual fruit in Sep or Oct. But in the mean time watch this video to see what happened after pruning it. ua-cam.com/video/UldS1UGfrHA/v-deo.html

Do you have just one? How is the production? I’m curious about pollination

I did just have one and it fruited great, I added another and it fruited more, now I have grafted 3 different varieties and all are doing great, especially in this heat.

@@flackfruitwould adding a honey jar increase fruiting? Are sure that the increased crop is not because the tree is older rather than because of cross pollination?
      Thanks for your answers!!

Hello, I live in Tallahassee FL which is the same USDA climate zone as you, (8b). I just got my first Jujube tree a ‘Suger Cane’. I’m waiting for a contorted variety either ‘So’ or ‘ZigZag’ to be available at the nursery in May. I want to get two Jujubes for cross pollination. Both of these are supposedly early fruit bearing varieties. Does it make a difference for pollination purposes if they are early or late fruitier bearing trees?

    • @flackfruit
      @flackfruit  Рік тому

I don't think so. Both of mine flower at the same time, but then they don't pollinate where fruit sets for about a month of flowering. I do know that you would want both Jujube's to flower at the same time to get pollination, but I don't think the varieties really flower or fruit at different times, at least that is my experience. Sounds fun, I am excited you get to enjoy the Jujube. I love them.

    Stupid prunning.

So you don't like pruning? You don't have to do it, I just do it because I want to maintain the size of the tree, if you don't prune then it will get to about 30 ft tall, which for me is useless, but for others might be beneficial.

@@flackfruitthank you for making jujube content. I live at 5000’ elevation in the arid mountains, but we do get snow, it has been in the ground a little over a year, Lang Jujube, it’s a little smaller than yours now (at the time of video, it’s blooming very nicely, survived the 10F degree winter (I thought it died) but I really just wanted to ask the benefits to topping (pruning) does it help fruit production?
      Thanks
