Growing specific citrus trees in the ground, varieties of cumquats, oranges, and loquats. These are located in the front of the house where there is less wind and more opportunities with shade. I made shade covers and watered more frequently when temps got over 100 degrees.

    I'm soo jealous. I killed so many newly planted trees that had thick trunks - by overwatering over the summer. Really need to leave them alone even though they look "drought" I killed 2 great looking 4 in one pluots, emerald beaut plum, two other great variety plums (forgot the name right now). All by overwatering. My soil is clay and it looks really dry on top.

    Hello. I have two fairly round cherry trees. They are about four years old. Not very big but fruiting. This year I noticed they took a dive. I’m concerned. There is a lot of things to write. Anyway, I’m in zone 8b as well. I think we’re in the same town. I bought a home and am new to the area and am struggling with getting started. I’m trying to treat my soil but my composts won’t take because of how dry it is here. Anyway, if you’re close, would you consider looking at my trees? I want to plant fig and apricot and grapes. Possibly blackberry too. I live behind Basha’s on the corner of Alpha. I have a chicken coop and black privacy tarp on my fences. I hope this isn’t too much info. But I’d be thrilled to meet and hear your opinion. I don’t want them to die if I can help it. Thanks for your time!

    • @pulsarradio

      @@flackfruit because I would hypothesize the soil they are in doesn't retain water enough. I'm an opposite situation - in AZ with soil that is clay in some spots and loamy in others. We've planted about 20 citrus in the past five years and the ones that came potted in sandy soils took MUCH longer to adapt and needed a lot more waterings. Citrus like deep infrequent waterings so I think the sandy soil having you water more often wouldn't be ideal. Ours truly only adapted once the roots made their way to the native soil which retains water better. Clay soil is the other extreme, but I think if you could make it more loamy you would retain a lot more nutrients and have to water less often. I understand that sand is often suggested because it drains well, but it also doesn't retain a lot of nutrients.

    I'm from St George as well. That heat wave was tough. Three of my Fig trees didn’t make it & my Necta-Z... they were all in pots. My in ground Flavor Supreme & Flavor King Pluots are Growing well, except my Supreme got bad aphids & destroyed most of the leaves, so only 2 fruit. My king had almost 30 fruit & huge. My Apricot was 8' tall last year & tight branches to the tree, I chopped it to 3.5' in February & its 8' tall again but I trained the branches to grow at 45°. My Aprium did well & had some lovely fruits. My Elberta Peach did pretty good, not as much growth as last two I mentioned. Fruits grew on the very bottom branches at 1.5' high. They had fiery red flesh & were incredibly delicious. Enlightenment Garden channel waters daily, but some trees get more water, that video is helpful. I almost did what she did. Where did you get your mulch? Also you don't want rotting mulch touching your trunk, pull it back a few inches or more. My other 5 fig tree's in pots in lots of shade, maybe 3-4 hours of sun are doing great & I water those daily about 2-4 seconds with the hose & they're putting on growth. Sincerely, Matthew

      Thank you for the long response. It sucks to hear about some of your trees dying. I have a couple of others just hanging on right now, but we will see what happened. I will pull back the mulch, it is usually for roots anyways not the trunk. I usually don't water by the trunk so that is why I thought it wouldn't be a problem. I had an arborist dump them for me a year ago. I need to find more mulch though. I also just purchased 10 fig trees in pots in CA and brought them back, they are doing well I had to repot some of them but they might go in the ground next year. Would you be ok with me stopping by your place to see what you have set up? PM me if you are interested. Thanks for watching.

    • @MatthewsFabrication
      @MatthewsFabrication 3 місяці тому

      @flackfruit Yeah, I guess it happens down here. A neighbor gets citrus type trees every year & they keep dying on him, but he's determined to figure it out. Did the Arborist charge any money for the mulch? There's Chip drop... watch some UA-cam videos. Maybe worth it, but may need quite a few others to share the mulch/chips with. That's awesome about the 10 fig trees. What gallon pots & what varieties? I have 7 varieties, most are small, but hopefully big next year when I plant them in the ground... need to rip out more landscape bushes that are just messy. That would be totally cool with me if you stopped by, I was actually thinking it would be cool to see your place as well to get ideas from. I'll try to figure out how to PM you. Sincerely, Matthew

    Correction: Comfrey is a nitrogen feeder, not fixer. The leaves make a good compost tea -- but they deplete the soil, not enrich it. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has lost grafted trees from a nursery. I also plan to use the rootstock in creative ways.

    As someone who lives in the 120F heat of the Sonoran Desert and grows fruit and citrus trees, I can tell you that you ABSOLUTELY MUST water sufficiently every single day, Water at the same times, too. Some trees need multiple watering in the same day. Stop trying to see how little water you can get away with and just generously water every day. You cannot and will not kill them with over watering! That is a farce. And mulch all around them, too.

    • @flackfruit
      @flackfruit 4 місяці тому

      Sounds good to me. I will prepare for it this next year. When I watered every day my more established trees wilted, they didn't come back with new growth until after changing back to deep every other day. So it could be that I have trained the older ones to go deeper with roots and the newer ones didn't get it often enough. At those temps I would agree with you, every day. Edge of Nowhere farms does it 2-3xs a week and they are in AZ just north of Phoenix they haven't had any problems, but they are also watering almost 90 gal per tree per week.

    • @cs7717
      @cs7717 4 місяці тому

      @@flackfruit Soils also make a huge difference. You're older trees could be in clay, or even worse, rotting compost. You could have good soil in one spot and 10 feet away really bad soil. You don't want the water ponding for long around the trees. But my guess is you have perhaps fallen for the I must plant in compost fallacy. Compost is rotting material. You want that on the top six to eight inches where the feeder roots are, not down below underground. Think of a forest and mimic that. The compost is always on the top and that's why they are called feeder roots. When you bury compost when planting, you're going to have problems down the road as the tree matures.

    I use Miracle-Gro water storing crystals for my paw paws. It helped when my area had no rain for a month and a half

    Young paw paws need shade! We have shade cloth around and on top of ours. Once they get older they love the full sun

    looks like a watering issue.

      When I watered more, some of the trees were showing signs of overwatering so I cut back again and yes I agree, I was not watering enough for the heat wave and was too little too late. Hopefully I will learn from the lesson. Thanks.

    My Advice: you are living in the desert. This non-pawpaw territory. I don't mind your attempt. But BUT but --- even in the East we plant pawpaws primarily in March-April-May. Summer transplanting is a bad idea. To all people I recommend Spring and Fall planting. . . . Let us know in 2025 and 2026 how your new pawpaw trees are growing.

    • @flackfruit
      @flackfruit 4 місяці тому

      I know it is non-pawpaw territory, but I still have to try. I am a couple of years later, they are just slowly dying, I get good growth the first spring and then it seems like I can't do anything to get them to grow. But I know of a couple of people near me that are growing them successfully. So I might change location and give it another go. Thanks for the response.

    How does the Redland taste compare to the Sugarcane? And which do you prefer?

    • @flackfruit
      @flackfruit 4 місяці тому

      Sugarcane is sweeter, Redland had a more nutty flavor to it and not as sweet. but was 4x the size so more to eat.

    Are all the pluots/hybrids on Citation rootstock? You would probably have to graft them yourself, but Myrobalan (seedling), maybe St Julian, or Nemaguard/peach rootstock might have better survivability there. Or did they get tunneled into as well? (See! I watched until the end before commenting!)

    • @flackfruit
      @flackfruit 4 місяці тому

      lol, thanks for watching until the end! Two others did get tunneled, most are on Citation, I think I will give it a try with what you are saying with other rootstock. I did it successfully with Persimmon, I think I can do it with stone fruit. Thanks!!

      Agreed. Other rootstocks may do better than citation. Sorry for your loss man.

    Buy sun umbrellas when cheap and refit them with shade cloth. Put rings of stones around the trees to trap cool and moisture

    • @flackfruit
      @flackfruit 4 місяці тому

      I wish that would work with the umbrellas. I get 40 mph winds here almost on a daily basis and the current shade cloth has to be replaced/adjusted almost every year. I tried the rocks stones but it died with one of the trees. I will give it another go.
