- Nat King Cole & The King Cole Trio perform "By the River St. Marie" in the 1944 feature SWING IN THE SADDLE.
thanks to 1northbreed1 for uploading the complete feature. Nat King Cole fans have been looking for this for years, it's one of the rarest of his early film appearances. I've excerpted out his number, but I would encourage everyone to watch the whole movie - there's some wonderful stuff by the Hoosier Hotshots and Jimmy Wakely, among many others.
This is THE classic edition of the King Cole Trio, with Oscar Moore (guitar) and Wesley Prince (bass), in a 1944 Columbia pictures B-western musical. They perform one of their great speciality arrangements, "By The River St. Marie," a wonderful 1931 song by Harry Warren & Edgar Leslie. (The trio had been performing this at least since 1938, when they recorded it for a transcription and then again as a commercial 78 in 1940.)
It's amazingly wonderful to have this on video - young Nat King Cole on the rise, and the whole group, rather respectfully treated in satin cowboy shirts! - Комедії
Oscar Moore...man... what a pioneer.
That’s my father on guitar. Oscar Moore guitarist of the Nay King Cole Trio!
Amazing, do you have any stories about your very talented father? I have listened to his record with Leroy Vinnegar many times
Absolutely EPIC!!!! Thanks for the upload. Oscar sounds great as well!!!
Oscar Moore! Breathtaking.
I think I heard some George Benson riffing in there ! 👍🎸💯
Nat King Cole was an amazing musician, and talented singer, producer, and force.
Much love to Oscar Moore.👍
THE KING COLE TRIO:
Nat "King" Cole, piano and vocal; Oscar Moore, guitar; Johnny Moore, bass.
A pretty melody, they give it all the sensitivity its due and have fun with it too. Great footage, thank you for digging up and sharing. I love them.
Various sites which print out the lyrics to this song write "angel wings reached out across the sea," and that may be how the lyrics appear in the original sheet music - but in all of the vocal versions I've heard - King Cole Trio (two versions), Stan Kenton, Frankie Laine, Sy Oliver etc., the lyric is clearly "The ANGELUS rang out upon the sea."
one of my fav clips on youtube
