      I think the best way to find out is trying. Try as many things as possible, whether it be arts, or sports, or activities, just keep an open mind and there will be a moment when you'll feel confident and shining from within (my drama classes were a life-changing game for me, as at first I started doing this to fight my shyness and social phobia, but when you're on the stage, knowing exactly what to do, what to say, where to go, it was the first time for me to like being watched by many people. So don't be afraid of trying new things out ; Who knows? Maybe you'll get a nice surprise!

      Im 20 and I still don't know what to do with my life. But I have to got to college, and since Ive "wasted" 2 years of my life already Im not allowed to change careers after I choose (moslty because college is expensive). So I have one chance to choose a carrer, and while I know that you don't need to live your dream through you work, I still have to choose a major... And I have no idea...

    I use the same pens! I'm also obsessed with them and notebooks. I recently found you on UA-cam and at the age of 40 after a decade of heartache, divorce, toxic relationships and having kids I realized I didn't know who I was. For the the first time in my life had no one telling me who I was supposed to be or what to do and I had no idea where to start. Thank you you will continue to be a huge help in this for me!

    I caught myself shining when we were designing characters on our class. I'm studying product design right now, but on one of our classes we had to draw an animal with distinct character, gestures etc, I happily draw mine (turtle) in a record time, I couldn't even keep myself from doodling other animals. When I searched concept design further, I realised how it is a mix of things I love or interesting to me.
    I'm still going to do this exercise. I need to see all those things on a paper and organise my life.

    While I've been in the army I went into a severe depression, to the point that I was thinking about taking my own life. The only thing that could touch me or move me, and get me back to reality - was Music. I'm not a musican nor a singer but Mariah Carey and her self-help songs literally saved my life. Along side with other artists as well... I just can't imagine where I would be without Music. If at all.
    You said that music is not the best way to touch or influence people... and for me, and I believe for many others as well - music is everything.
    Ofcourse I respect your opinion! I just wanted to share my point of view about the topic.
    Besides that, everything else that you said is completely resonating with me!
    I've been watching you videos for quite a while now, and I have to say I really like most (if not all) of them. So please - keep it up! You are inspiring so many people, including my self. Thank you for that.

      Aw that's beautiful to hear. Music has definitely helped me in tough times too. I don't doubt that music can be inspiring & empowering, I just personally had ideas that would be better communicated through words (videos, podcasts, books) than song! Imagine me trying to teach the concept of "Ikigai" and how to find your life purpose in a song... I would sound tacky because music isn't the right medium to teach those details haha. Thank you for the love!! 💕

      Yes! Music was one of the biggest factors in keeping me alive a few years ago. On top of that, music has always been a way of getting away from the world in a sense. All my life whenever I was down a song would be the answer. Daily, songs help me communicate even with myself, and music is my strongpoint in school by far. Playing two instruments by ear and starting on a third one, I think I can fairly say music has changed my life much for the better. I want to respect Lavendair, but I also respect music.

    I have just read the book itself, called Ikigai - the secret of the Japanese people for a long and happy life, by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles. It has become one of my favorite books, definitely a must read! And it explains the Ikigai concept in more depth, and the funny stories of the most old people on earth who live in Japan, aged 100+!

    I dont know what to do with my life and it makes me so stressed, I feel like I'm not good ENOUGH at the things I'm actually good at.
    I feel like I have potential and a mission in life but I have no idea what I should be doing.
    I want to be remembered but I don't want to be hated or criticized.
    I'm scared that I might not be able to achieve my true potential or my dreams, and I don't even know what my dreams are!
    Sure I have some interest in a few things but not enough to have passion for them.

      Take a deep breath, relax and bring up a smile on your face no matter how small or stressed out you are. You've got this! You already know you have potential and you're _aware_ That's what matters the most. You will make everything fall in their respective places. I believe that. So keep smiling!

      idkwhatmyusernameshouldbe I have the same problem. I’m good at a lot of things and have interest in a lot of things yet I feel as if I don’t have enough passion to pursue them or enough time to do everything I want to do. Quite the paradox isn’t it? You might want to search up a term called “multipotentialite” (there’s a great tedtalk covering this subject)

    Great exercise for ANY age. We may start in one direction then realize that we have not been using all of our gifts to the fullest extent. Love the IKIGAI model and wish this was used early on in high school and again in mid-twenties in college to see if those desires have changed. Thanks @Lavendaire !

    I believe that it is not necessary to find your passion now but to rather gain experiences doing whatever you may desire and as many things as possible. Life is about that - doing and being. Doing all those things, your passion will eventually find you, not the other way round. So IMO it is useless to look for it, for it will come to you. So stop planning and wondering what to do and start living! This is how you create a life worth living.

    I really love this video and find it really inspiring. I'm a singer, a songwriter and a classically trained guitarist. Somehow I do feel that I can affect people's lives directly. I know that it's not the most practical approach, but I often find that people get in touch with their emotions during a concert. They cry, they let go and are inspired to do the things they love when me and my boyfriend perform. Maybe when it is one's purpose in life, we are able to touch someone's life directly through music, but it does take a lot of work to get to that point. Especially to earn a living with it as well. Wishing you all the best! So glad you found your purpose and through that are helping lots of people find their inner voice! 😘❤️

    I definitely feel shining and rising up when i make music, when i make art in a general vision. I feel that i was made to throw reflexion in music to the world. It's not about being popular or not, it's about contributing. And it can be with an another point of view of life, or time. Everyone realizes how the time goes fast, and it is so scary... So the music can help a lot, not for being happier and throw smiles around, but for accepting the life the way it is.

    You are, in my opinion and 63 yrs of living, absolutely correct in so much of this video. Finding what makes you glow (you’ll know it when you experience it, as will others when they interact with you) is probably the most important part. It’s your motivation, what helps you get past the not so great parts of your day.
    Have fun with the journey. Ask questions of those in the field you’re exploring (informational interview), and listen to your gut, observe your reactions during the meeting. Are you still excited when you leave, or feel as though you dodged a bullet? That inner voice is your best friend.

    My motivation has been shot since graduating college. Thank you so much for this video. I've finally been looking at youtubers that can help encourage me and help me better myself. It makes me feel like I can accomplish things.
    My goals in life: I really want to become someone people can rely on, especially my partner and my family. I want to be happy and tell people what I do.
    I don't want to keep feeling ashamed because I haven't moved forward to better myself because what forward might look like.
    I've definitely been avoiding thinking about jobs, etc. I just make excuses and don't put myself out there enough. Waste my time on youtube channels that don't help encourage me. But I am doing it. I was able to graduate from a tough school with a Neuroscience Degree. I can do this.

    Very interesting concept. Instead of the overlap between what I'm good at and what I love, I prefer to explore who I am. Self awareness is ultimately the key. Brutal self awareness. We can mislead ourselves when it comes to what we're good and what we love if we're not first incredibly self aware. I know I have. I was a really good film producer and I loved movies and the process but there were things about it that I hated. As a result, I wasn't happy. It wasn't until I started to really understand who I was that I started down a path that is perfectly me. Keep doing you Aileen ❤️

    • @lavendaire

      that's a great point! self awareness is key. thanks so much & wishing you the best in your journey 💞

    • @FuturistFrequencypod
      @FuturistFrequencypod 7 років тому +7

      Your comment is interesting - you note how much you loved film production and movies, yet note "there were things about it that I hated." If you're searching for a career that will have no flaws or aspects about it that you hate, then you're ultimately going to be unhappy. I find it intriguing that in contemporary society we base majority of our life/career decisions on this idea of following your "passion," yet passion is so fleeting. It's human nature to get bored of the novel and exciting, and dislike aspects of something you originally loved; that's life.
      I don't think the key to a successful career is the intersection between what you're good at and what you're passionate about. To be successful, you can't base your motivation towards a career path off passion, as it's so nebulous and fleeting. Success requires discipline, and deliberate practice, even when it gets hard or you hate it. Throwing away your talents for the sake of boredom isn't called being "self aware" - to be honest, it sounds like you left when the going got tough. I don't mean any offence by this, I'm just a random on the internet and I may have interpreted what you intended, but I'm just being brutally honest with you. You seem like a really cool human being regardless. x

      @NateProctor 7 років тому +15

      Natalie Elizabeth and I in return don't mean to offend you but you are wrong about me. I did not leave when the going gets tough. I currently work 100 hours a week on what I love to do. The going is definitely tough and here I am every weekend working away toward something that I love and am passionate about. Those things I hate were ethical matters (like how the industry is horribly misogynistic and also that it treats a large majority of the people with a meanness that I can't and will never subscribe to) and also for personal matters (I had horrific migraines everyday because of the kind of work it required). It was a difficult decision but the right one. I didn't have the passion for making films to ignore or put up with these matters. And yes, that absolutely is self awareness to realize that no matter the success I had (I raised over $40k for a documentary that was covered in every major news outlet), I would never be happy. I never said I was looking for a career without flaws. I don't enjoy waking up every morning after 5 hours of sleep but I keep doing it because I believe in what I'm doing and because it makes me feel purposeful and therefore joyous. I stick by my statement that we are lured into thinking that our talents should define our careers. If that were the case, I would have never become a writer. I wasn't born with the ability to write. I was terrible for many many years. But through an intense and rigorous level of practice I developed an ability to write professionally. If you're interested, I suggest you read the book Talent is Overrated. It's a thorough study of something called deliberate practice.

      Wishing you all the best on your path! I've just graduated from high school and am thinking about career possibilities. What would you say is most important to become a writer?

    • @NateProctor
      @NateProctor 7 років тому +2

      Thank you so much! The most important thing you can do is develop a rigorous daily practice. I highly recommend you read about something called "deliberate practice." A really good summary can be found here: www.farnamstreetblog.com/2012/07/what-is-deliberate-practice/ Pay particular note of the exercises Ben Franklin developed to become a better writer. It's similar to things I did when I went from being homeless to published author and Columbia grad. Except even more intense. If you really want to be a great writer, put your head down for the next five years and develop this deliberate practice to your craft. You will see enormous results. You might also want to check out my latest video here on UA-cam in which I explain the 3 most effective writing tips I've developed in the last 6 years. Would love to talk more about writing if you have any more questions. Sending you

    My sweetspot is doing youtube (in the niche self care, mental health, personal development mixed with self expression because sometimes my Creativity explodes) & selling creative products (like shirt designs, Quote cards, ebooks & courses).
    The combination is perfect right now. Sadly I can't afford all the things(mostly programs) I want to have to get better, but I'm thankful for what I already have.

  • @Sorcharys
    @Sorcharys 7 років тому +9

    This is perfect for me. I have been down for years now, almost ending my degree but I can't seem to be able to find a future, something I want to work for. I know I am good at drawing and this is what I want to pursue but I know I love to entertain people, make them laugh. So far my idea to reach my ikigai is to work on the gaming industry (I have a good understanding of games) so I can create amazing worlds that people will love to see but... It's not what I want. I want to interact with people, be my own boss but still make art and make people laugh, have a great time, and spend time playing or making games. It's not easy to find what I can do with all this together, out of ideas or maybe it's right in front of me and I am blind to not see it.

    • @moleshaman3040
      @moleshaman3040 7 років тому +1

      Have you considered working in the wider gaming industry (including pen &paper games , increasingly popular board games and toys). It sounds like you would fulfill many of the aspirations you have by doing so. Illustration and children's book publishing might also interest you or working as a museum or community outreach worker using art (which would also fulfill your aspirations IMO). Teaching art in highschool or even nursery school/primary could also be for you since you like working with people. You could easily turn your love of play ,imagination and art skills to enhance your class teaching and make learning fun and innovative for young people! All the best and I hope it hel ps 🎆

    • @Sorcharys
      @Sorcharys 7 років тому

      Mole Shaman I'm debating on those popular board games/toys, it's something I don't have much knowledge on. My game knowledge has been mostly digital, so PC/Consoles etc, and even with that I might have to leave my country to learn it for real (no courses on the subject on my country and I have searched everywhere). I can't stand young kids for a long time and I hate how many don't care for what you teach so school is a big no for me unfortunatly, and because school only brings bad memories and I rather have a small class away from school that people go because they want to learn the subject.

    • @mariahparker6513
      @mariahparker6513 7 років тому

      Sorkary if you wanted to teach, there are schools that high-schoolers can go to take an elective class on something they want to learn. I think they are called Career Institutes, but they could be different in every country. there are also high schools specifically for artists/ people who are creative in many different ways. I go to a career Institute in the U.S. and they have classes on almost everything, even game design.

    • @mariahparker6513
      @mariahparker6513 7 років тому

      Sorkary or if u want to interact with people and make them laugh, u could start a UA-cam channel where u draw and play video games? it's just a suggestion, but you would be able to build an audience and entertain them while doing something you like. sorry if what I'm saying is wordy, I like writing. :)

    • @Sorcharys
      @Sorcharys 7 років тому +1

      No problem, is good to see people helping. I actually don't know much about Career Institutes, there are just a few in my country and none has what I like, mostly because here we focus more on product/publicity, overall those areas. It's suprisingly restrictive what we can learn and many face the problem to have to go abroad to learn what we personally want. I know in Europe some universities that have game design and I am trying to go study to one of them, one in particular it's exactly what I wanted and gives a solid fundation to work more solo.
      Drawing and video games UA-cam? I don't think I have ever seen that mixture, but it surely is a thing that I have been thinking on doing for a while.

      just a fangirl I think a good idea might be to take a self assessment on multiple intelligences. Search 9 intelligences test, and that will give you an idea of what are you naturally good at, or can become good at easiest than in other areas. As an example if you have high Linguistic intelligence, then you will be naturally good at learning languages or writing. I think is a good start if you really feel lost.

      I feel you, it was hard for me to identify this too. There are many reasons why it would feel like you are not sure what you are good at, for me it was that I am good at something I didn't think is a REAL skill. So, broadening your view and including even the small things can be a great start.
      I know this is an old comment, I wonder how you are doing now :) I help people who are stuck with finding their purpose move from uncertainty to clarity about who they are and what they want to do. I am doing my market research now, so if you have a few minutes, please fill out. You can book a chat with me in the end where I can help you identify what is holding you back and how to overcome it :) I am so happy to help, please book the session if you are interested, would love to hear from you :)

    We change so much through the course of our lives. What we love today we might not love in a few years. What fills our soul today might leave us wanting a few years from now. The world around us also contributes to the perception we have of our likes and dislikes. Even our talents and skills change with time. So this concept of Ikigai is one that would have to be revisited as we mature.
