Update and friendly reminder: Nihao mobile is a small Chinese company. It requires face scanning to register your sim card on its website. As an IT engineer, I always avoid these websites / Apps that ask for my personal biometric data unless I cannot find alternative option and cannot live without them. In my opinion, it isn't worth taking risk for only a simcard purchase. You can make your own decision after reading below my input: There is no specific laws enacted targeting private entities ' collection, use, retention and destruction of individual biometric data (especially facial geometry) in China, even in many other European countries and many states in USA. Unlike other unique identifiers, when compromised, can be changed. Biometrics, however, are biologically unique to the individual; therefore, once compromised, the individual has no recourse, is at heightened risk for identity theft, and is likely to withdraw from biometric-facilitated transactions. Hence we should avoid leaking our biometric data as less as possible, especially to any private entities.
You make valid points, but let me tell you it's impossible to use some systems in China without some sort of face recognition. Simcards are no exceptions. Every telecom company will ask for your passport and record the data (yes your face) in their system to be linked to your sim card. Same with wechat pay and alipay, you cannot use these without updating your passport and sometimes even a selfie do they have your face data as well. I work in a company that specializes in biometrics and as long as the core encryption key isn't leaked to decrypt the information being stored in the biometric database, your data is safe. Let's be real, as soon as you step foot inside of China, your face is in the police system. It is impossible to avoid. Also, the for the fraud part, when it comes to banking, liveness detection is a must, to prevent fraud. (IR detection and random actions to prove you are human and not take a picture and simply use that to pass authentication)
@@BorderlessCommerce I agree it is impossible to never have your biometric data used by any system. My point is that we should do my best to avoid private entities, especially small ones. Wechat and Alipay are tech giants which are hard for us to escape from using their products. But they have very strict guidelines to access their database for anyone and strong technology to guarantee the safety of their database. How about small private entities? It is beyond our imagination for our biometric data to be illegally traded and fraudulently used in the future. Biometric data is the most important part of our identity. We should always treat it carefully and seriously.
BC is right, although given the recent data leak incidents, no one is safe from this. But to get the most basic stuff in China it's indeed inevitable to scan face.
@@BorderlessCommerce What do you mean by "sponsored by the government", does that mean they get a subsidy for handling quarantines? I thought the traveler had to pay the bill in full for the hotel..... And about Shangri-La.... add meals 3x a day..... OUCH!
Yes, it matters big time! ICBC Canada is a CANADIAN bank account, not a Chinese one. You wont get the same benefits of a mainland Union Pay card issued from the Canadian ICBC. Only can be done in mainland China.
hey hello, im struggling to get the sim card from europe, i am not moving to china, but many services i want to consume requires a chinese number, do you know if i can get chinese sim from europe?
Unfortunately, I don't know any legal channels unless you step foot inside of China. Maybe you can rent run temporary but they are mostly not legit. Know anybody coming to China soon?
I was wondering, do you still have service with them? Were billing cycles always on time, or were there any shady transactions during your time with the service? Thank you!
I still use them to this day. They are still very active with customer service and no shady charges without prior notification in English. They also authenticate your phone number with your passport to make it easy to open a bank account in China
@@BorderlessCommerce Alright! Thanks! I already got service with them. I hope it goes well for a while. Having a English-friendly phone service in China makes it so much easier, and I appreciate that a lot!
@@BorderlessCommerce Also, thank you for making your review on them. I would have not gone with their service otherwise, since there's little reviews on their company as of right now. I'll also consider making a review on UA-cam on their service just to help support it. Business like this need more foreigners support, since they were created for us in the first place. It's only fair to support them back.
@@samuraikyozz2483 Yes, they are not so savvy when it comes to marketing. They have helped expats get phone numbers while in quarantine. Thank you so much for watching the video.
Hi I’ve just watch your video it’s very helpful but my question is how can I buy it on quarantine without a bank account or PayPal..I’ll only carry cash on me on my arrival. Please clear me up on that. Thanks
Not even a PayPal account huh? You can contact their customer service and see if they will be willing to send you one for free and you pay them back after everything is settled. They may help.
I do not live in China, and am interested in a Chinese number nationally, is there such an option? For any country I come to in the Far East I can use with the Chinese number
PayPal charges high fees for transferring money from North America $35 dollars I was told by a Chinese living in China. Also, it supposedly is hard to get a PayPal account nowadays over there., Anybody heard or knows about it?
