    Loved this video. I work with a lot of Vietnamese people at work (about 1/3). This really taught me some more about daily life in Vietnam, and what they may have experienced before they left. Have you personally noticed much of a difference between North and South Vietnamese culture? I am learning Northern dialect.

    • @doodahgurlie
      @doodahgurlie Рік тому +9

      Good for you for learning it, especially learning the northern dialect because southern dialect has a lot of slangs and often words are just mispronounced (The qu sound is swapped out for the w sound, but only on SOME some words like Vietnam is Yietnam...then again Hai Phongers will say VietLam...egads!)

    • @lilylovesitaly3932
      @lilylovesitaly3932 Рік тому +2

      DoodahGurl FYI northerners mispronounced many words too. Like for example, people from Hải Dương, Hưng Yên tend to get confused and get the “L” and “N” sounds mixed up. In other words, if the word begins with the letter “N”, they will say it like it begins with the letter “L” instead, and vice versa…

    • @doodahgurlie
      @doodahgurlie Рік тому +2

      @@lilylovesitaly3932 If you read my comment again, you will see that I mention Hai Phongers swapping out the L and N and gave an example where they will say VietLam instead of VietNam.

      Northern Vietnam man usually more competitive, agressive, hard working and more family oriented than their Southern counter part.
      Northern women are more consevative and usually prettier than their Southern counter part. And very family oriented. For Vietnamese it is widely excepted that Northern girl are the best wife material , while Southern girl are most fun to date with

    • @lilylovesitaly3932
      @lilylovesitaly3932 Рік тому

      @@phanhuyduc2395 “northern women are more conservative and usually prettier than their counterparts” REALLY? ARE YOU SERIOUS? I have never seen a more conceited, stupid comment such as yours. You need to go back to school and learn English grammar and proper punctuations before you get on UA-cam. You made so many mistakes in one short comment it isn’t even funny. First off, it’s “counterparts” NOT “counter part”. “It’s widely ACCEPTED that…” NOT “excepted.” FYI, “excepted” isn’t even a word in English dude. “…are more fun to date.” NOT “are more fun to date WITH.” People like you are the reason why us southerners don’t really like northerners. I’m being polite and try not to use the word “HATE” here.

    À, another difference is that in VN it’d be perfectly okay and very normal for people to ask about your age when you first meet while, in America, you’d be considered rude rude rude for asking people’s age regardless (first meet or last meet or “middle” meet 😅). People in America is way too sensitive and the fact that EVERYTHING got politicized makes it even worse.

    Loved this, one thing I would add to the driving differences is the horn honking. Vietnam is so much better and tolerable by getting out of the way verses here in the US, you get flipped off or worse.

    • @Feathertail2205
      @Feathertail2205 Місяць тому

      When I was in Vietnam earlier this year I observed that people on the road understood the flow and rhythm of traffic, relative to each driver. They treat vehicles like an extension of their own bodies and move as if they're on foot traffic weaving between other people while trying not to bump anyone (to do this effectively they have to honk to let others know their incoming presence, especially when driving a car in the city). In the U.S., there are much tighter regulations, traffic laws, and organized road infrastructures that everyone is expected to follow [the system] rather than communicating with other drivers to know what's going on around them, so when someone honks, people can feel shocked being honked at and get upset/reactive because they don't always get why they're being honked at ("I'm driving lawfully so why is someone giving me attitude? Fine, I'll show them a piece of my mind.") It's bizarre observing the difference. But I get that it's easy to feel jaded driving on US roads, because you aren't sharpening your senses like in Vietnam where you must 110% be aware of your surroundings at all times and in all directions due to the sheer number of people that are literally centimeters away from you.

    Just want to mention that street food as they know it in Vietnam is oftentimes illegal in the USA. Even where it is legal, the start-up costs can be immense since you're forced to have a food truck, potentially expensive licenses for cooking fuels (like natural gas), cost of rent, etc. There are often limits on where you're even allowed to set up in order to stop street foods from taking business from established stores.
    On the absolute lowest end, it could cost ~$6,000 (or around 143 million dong) to get started.
    That can be absolutely unaffordable for poor folk in the US, even though a lot of countries see starting street food businesses as the thing the poorest of the poor do.

    Another reason why Vietnamese young people still live with their parents is because it’s too expensive to own a house here. If they don’t get help from their parents, it might take them years to save up enough money buy one.

      Nhờ google dịch dùng. Chỉ giá nhà ở Sài Gòn và Hà Nội là đắc đỏ vì nó là trung tâm. Ở các tỉnh khác không quá mắc. Như tôi có nhà, có 500m2 đất riêng, nhưng tôi vẫn sống chung với cha mẹ

      Ý kiến của bạn chỉ đúng nếu xét những gia đình ở các thành phố lớn như Hà Nội hay Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh trong hơn thập kỷ trở lại đây thôi. Trước những năm 2000, khi nền kinh tế Việt Nam chưa thực sự bùng nổ, giá đất ở không hề đắt đỏ như bây giờ, kể cả các quận nội thành. Nét văn hoá này có từ xa xưa rồi chứ không phải bây giờ mới có. Ngay cả văn hoá tự lập từ năm 18 tuổi của phương tây theo mình nhớ không nhầm cũng xuất phát từ kinh thánh.

      Chi phí để mua 1 miếng đất nhỏ gần SG là khoảng 1 tỷ, xây căn nhà 200 triệu = 1 tỷ 200 triệu. Trong khi lương cơ bản khoảng 6 triệu 1 tháng. Tính ra phải nhịn ăn nhịn uống và làm liên tục 200 tháng ( hơn 16 năm). Bất khả thi

    Tùy góc nhìn từng người mà thấy cách người Mĩ cho con ra ở riêng sớm là ưu điểm hay khuyết điểm. Nếu không có số lượng lớn rời nhà sống tự lập sớm thì mức độ mua sắm, chi tiêu không cao. Điều đó không tốt cho nền kinh tế. Nhưng vì sớm rời gia đình như vậy khiến cho sự thân thiết với người thân trong gia đình không cao.

    Smoking cigarettes. Even here in the states, Viet kieu men smoke like chimneys. I rarely see Viet kieu women smoke. Unfortunately too many smoke and it's not good. A pack of smokes can be $10 a pack but Kentucky may be cheaper.

      It is one of the most unattractive habits to pick up so I really wish the Vietnamese government would step in and tell people to stop doing it. I mean, 50% of men smoke?!? I see so many young kids there starting out smoking at a very young age...not sure why the parents don't nip that in the bud. Smokers are gross because the smell isn't something they can hide from non-smokers. I hate having to breathe in that crap when I'm in a shared space or public area.

    Learn any language is hard, English or Vietnamese is no different. Fast foods in Vietnam are from foreign big corporations, for example like McDonald or KFC,. etc. Most Vietnamese prefer importing good because they thought anything from western world are superiority over the local ones.
    Vietnamese like to have luxury good to wear because they thought other people will look at them as rich people, exclusive from the low class.
    For 8 years you live in Vietnam, not that bad for learning Vietnamese. The contracting I see is, streets are in Vietnam are full of trash, but streets are (in video)in the State are spotless. Well anyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I respect your opinion also. Peace and Cheer!

      Vietnam airlines flys non-stop from Saigon to San Francisco, he could do a west coast trip going through San Jose then orange county with stops in little Saigon and Bolsa Ave before heading through the Phoenix metropolitan on his way back east to Florida... Big road trip. Time frame 3-5 years.
