  • We revive an old go kart with a Tillotson 212cc engine! This old racing go kart is special, because the rider literally lays down in the seat, and is surrounded by aluminum fuel(?) tanks on either side. We were once told that these karts were built in the 1970s for large, oval NASCAR tracks and were driven in excess of 100MPH (in the 70s!!). We're planning on taking it to a proper paved track for a race against our other vintage racing go karts!
    Thanks for Watching!

That vintage, it probably had a Mac101, aka a Mccollough. Beastly little 2-stroke (12hp! Iirc) when it got on the pipe. I'd slow down just to feel the charge when it came 'on'.
That's an enduro-style frame, btw. Side tanks and the laydown seat are the telltale characteristics of a 70's era enduro racing kart.

Parilla or komet is a italian-american motor buider they also made airplane motors and have won many championships with these motors they was founded in 1968. When i was a kid we used one of there 25 HP airplane motors on our kart it would top out at about 125mph . I'm not proud of this but we used to outrun the cops in our kart when we was kids in the late 70's early 80's the could never catch us we would get so far in front of them they couldn't see us anymore and drive the kart right up under the porch or the barn and other times just pull up beside a building or car so much fun. Double WOW!!.... an old endurance kart (aka Enduro Kart class) for a $100.... and Congratulations on your 500th video!! That's fantastic... now, for number 1,000 - Yes? All the "lay down" Enduro Karts were 2 Stroke powered..as were ALL Racing Karts back then. They had Three (3) classes back then if I remember correctly... 100cc, 135cc and 150cc and your Kart looks to me like it may be a Margay (but not sure of the exact year other than Late 60's to Early 70's)... which is one of the Few remaining Go Kart companies in the US still surviving from back in the day. Some of the enduro races were very long... 12 - 24+ hrs, and those large aluminum tanks on there indicates that whoever had it back then was probably participating in some of those longer race venues.
My 2nd job (starting at 12+ yrs old, in the evenings & Saturdays during the school year) was working at new Go-Kart shop / store, that had recently opened where I lived, in 1962... setting up engines on new chassis, running them "in" on our engine dyno, etc, etc.. and wound up being able to race, as the shop received a team sponsorship from McCulloch ("Mac"), we ran 5 karts... all "Mac" powered of course, in various classes. All the various engines we sold in the shop, whether for cruising the Mall parking lots on Sundays (stores were all closed on Sundays back then), or for racing.... were ALL 2 cycle (American "Reed valve" design), Clinton, Power Products/West Bend, Homelite, McCulloch, and European rotary valve, Komet & Parilla, etc.
They're still running the enduro classes. Back in the 70's, on the "long tracks" (road race type circuits) of the south west (AZ, NM, TX, So.Cal. and in Europe) these Karts (depending on engine class) were typically good for 80 - 125+ mph. Of course the modern Enduro class Karts are much more sophisticated with tunable chassis, much more reliable & powerful engines, full bodies on them for better aerodynamics, etc. Some of the "Super Karts" (shifter Karts) today (250cc) are running 160+ mph speeds... depending on the track & overall gearing of course.
The "lay downs" did run some races on a few of the NASCAR tracks, such as Daytona... but the last time, at least that I know of... was back in 2007, but that's not to say that they don't now... I haven't "followed" them in recent years.
For a while back in the late 90's and early 2000's there was an "outlaw class" of "Super (shifter) Karts" that were running at Watkins Glenn, NY and at Louden, NH.... seems they had two classes, 750cc & later an 1140cc class, and from what I read about them (back in 2004 or so), they posting track speeds at well over 200 mph... apparently faster & quicker lap times than the cars were. I don't know if that "outlaw class" still exists or not.
I never ran the enduro class karts myself, just the sprints during the 1960's and later again between 1979 and 1983 under the WKF (World Karting Federation) rules.
Love your channel.... reminds me of my younger years... Enjoy your youth, while you have it... it DOES go by Fast!! I'm 70 now... and thinking about going "riding mower" racing, as there isn't much for Go-Kart racing in this area where I'm living now. : ) I subscribed to your channel a few years ago... right after watching the first video that I found of yours... keep it up, your efforts are Very Much enjoyed and appreciated.

The motors are 12" long and would require a separate tank of n2o. A ball valve is used to regulate the oxidizer flow. I designed these to be 100% homemade. Back in the middle 1960s the first time I drove a gocart much like that . A racing cart said to go 75 mph . I am sure it would run at least 50 because the road we ran it on the speed limit was 50 and I had no problem out running the log trucks on that road. In hind sight my parents were probably trying to reduce the family size . I was 7 years old at the time the cart was wrecked when a friend had his little brother sitting on his shoulders blast done the driveway through the machine shed wall and into a Marsh behind . collarbones were broken and the cart was hung in the rafters of the barn

People still race karts similar to these, just with bodywork. They're called enduro/laydown karts and they're meant for road courses and ovals rather than kart tracks. Some people put higher-powered 4-strokes in them (for example, the Briggs Animal). These 4-stroke ones can do around 80 mph on a road course. Some people put 1x or 2x 100cc 2-stroke engines on them, and some people use 125cc shifter kart motors, which make around 40 hp.

  • @holdenrice9694

I'd tuck that throttle cable away before it gets snagged on a tree branch or bush, gets pulled out of its hold-downs, and brings the butterfly valve with it locking your throttle open. I also want to see that engine get built. A performance carb would solve the throttle cable issue too.

  • @jeffpolsene680

These where called enduro karts, definitely pavement only karts. I remember seeing these towards the end of their popularity in the mid to late 70's. They had two stroke motors, McCulloch engines and later on they had Yamaha 125 two strokes. Sometimes they even had two motors. Running at speeds of 120 mph and more, you did not want to crash on one of these, especially with all that fuel 2 inches away from you. They had such big tanks because they did a lot of endurance racing via the name enduro. The thing that worries me is how close your right arm is to the clutch, with that big 4 strohe on there it does not leave much room. Cool to see one of these again.

It used to be a beautiful blue (frame) with shiny chrome gas tanks and black crisscrossing expansion chambers (exhaust). It had a nice black "interior" with a head-rest. Yes, you drove it laying almost flat, your back tilted up just slighly and your head up against the cusioned headrest. It's a flex frame, made to flex just a tad in the turns for better stability. (Think of a pair of eyeglasses frames that you can bend just a little and they spring back right into shape.) It had four-wheel hydraulic disk brakes with dual master cylinders. I built mine using a professional cart shop and equipped it with twin McCullough two-cycle racing engines and expansion chambers. I really never knew the actual engine torque/horsepower, because it was more about an engine built to turn very high R.P.M. Probably at least 10-12 HP each if you just want to know, but we didn't have a way to measure all that. It was more about the best engine out there for the job, and what you learned from other performance carts. The frame could be outfitted with a single engine but was really built for two engines. It wouldn't make sense in racing to run that frame with a single engine; you'd use a single engine cart for a single-engine racer. It had a solid live rear axle. Toe-in and caster/camber was adjustable on the front end. Each engine was started independently with a remote starter (basically a car starter motor welded to a small frame to hold it and a pulley that took a V-belt on the inside side of the engine crankshaft. The engines were designated left and right, so the drive-side shaft was to the outside on both sides (if I'm remembering correctly). Yes, you drove to incredible speed laying between two chrome gas tanks (one for each engine) on the left and right. In the video it appears the tanks were moved further out either to accommodate someone bigger than me or because someone thought it might be safer or offer more stability. I'm a smaller guy so it fit me perfectly. The fluid-filled centrifugal clutches handled the power transfer but it wasn't meant to sit still long. Another person got both engines started as quickly as possible and you wanted to get up to speed so the clutches would lock in and not overheat (about 50-60 mph for my gear ratio). Fastest I actually clocked mine using a follow vehicle was 125 mph, although if I'd had enough good straightaway I could have pushed it a bit faster, maybe 5 mph. Ground clearance? Get ready for it -- Lowest point to the ground was under my butt, just over 3/4." That's three-fourths inch, not three or four inches. No joke. It's a smooth pavement car. You could watch your front wheels expand with speed they were turning so fast. Cornering was incredible, and we mastered the drift long before the kids now in their bigger go-carts (small cars with bodies) think they did. It was really more fun geared down and driven in a huge parking lot back when everything pretty much still closed on Sundays, doing drifts, donuts and the like.

Guys!!!!! Get a good seat that allows you to sit up. Put duel motors on the back end. Adjust the steering wheel up to the new seating position. That would be so cool. Maybe switch the aluminum tanks to rock guards? like aluminum plates? Bigger tires for more clearance? That would be such a cool video. I watch you guys all the time. Thanks for all the cool videos guys!

It is a Meyers Lancer Bullet, built in Bellflower CA in 1974-75. Yours is a customer version with the fiberglass drivers compartment. A total of about 30 were built, with 10-12 like yours. the others were custom built from '72-75 for a particular driver/class/engine. They won 8 National Championships and ran in different classes from 100cc to 270cc (80+hp - 140mph). Two team Lancer Bullet drivers, who later became Indy Car winners, were Scott Pruett (100cc McCulloch 91B) and Kevin Cogan (100cc Komet K78 - 30hp - 14,000rpm, 110-115mph).

These are not Go-carts, they are called Karts. This style of Kart is called an "Enduro" Kart and they ran on road race tracks like Summit Point Raceway. Enduro karts would have 2 cycle engines like the KT100 yamaha (early 1980'S). Also the gas and brake pedals are adjustable for rider height, in the video, I see the pedals are in the rear position (short driver) if you look you can see another set of pedal pivots about 3 inches further forward (on the bumper). Moving those forward will increase comfort and visibility. Your knees, ideally would be down flat like laying in bed. This video brings back memories. Yes, I raced these from 1982-1986, Bob
