In this video I basically explain whether or not one can use cold engine oil in a hot engine.
Adding cold engine oil to a hot engine is a common concern for many vehicle owners, and it's essential to understand whether or not it's safe and acceptable to do so. Let's delve into this topic to clarify the situation.
In general, it is perfectly fine to add cold engine oil to a hot engine. The temperature difference between cold oil and a hot engine isn't significant enough to cause any harm to the engine. However, there are some essential points to keep in mind:
Engine Off: Always ensure that the engine is turned off before adding oil. Attempting to add oil while the engine is running is dangerous and can result in severe injuries.
Safety First: Wait a few minutes after turning off the engine to allow the hottest parts of the engine to cool slightly. This minimizes the risk of hot oil splattering when you open the oil filler cap.
Proper Oil: Use the correct type and viscosity of engine oil recommended by the manufacturer for your vehicle. Using the wrong oil can affect engine performance and longevity.
Check Oil Level: Before adding oil, check the oil level using the dipstick or the vehicle's oil level indicator. This ensures you add the right amount of oil and avoid overfilling, which can lead to issues.
Pouring Gradually: When adding the cold oil, pour it slowly to prevent spillage or overfilling. It's essential not to rush the process.
Recheck Oil Level: After adding the oil, wait a minute or two for the oil to settle in the engine. Then, recheck the oil level using the dipstick and adjust if necessary. It's better to slightly underfill than overfill the oil.
Waste Oil Disposal: Dispose of the used engine oil responsibly by taking it to an authorized collection center or an automotive service shop. Never dump used oil in the environment.
In summary, adding cold engine oil to a hot engine is safe and standard practice, provided you follow the precautions mentioned above. Engine oil is designed to withstand temperature variations and is not adversely affected by the minor temperature difference between hot and cold oil during the refill process. Properly maintaining your vehicle's oil level is crucial for the engine's longevity and optimal performance.
Of course this may be common knowledge to some but because there isn't really much information just saying this plainly, then I agree that there is some confusion as the whether it is ok or not. However, in this video I go through why it is in fact perfectly ok to do so.

Thanks for your video, I came here because I got scared earlier!!
I was rushing, changing oil on my wife's 2008 Kia amanti v6 earlier today, I was 3/4 of the way in with the 5-quart from advance (I imagine 75 to 80 degrees F oil temperature), and I heard a loud pop from inside engine.
I freaked out, so far so good. I called my mechanic friend and he said he's never heard that in his life.
In my mind I was thinking a camshaft cap or the camshaft itself. 🤞🤞

people have been adding cold oil to hot engines at gas station since cars were made. A lot of people check their oil at gas station like me since i have sloped driveway and owner's manual usually says check it after a minute or two from engine being shut off.

Is flushing oil necessary? I have never used it. I see it as a waste of money. But is there any benefit to using it . If so do you flush it with a new oil filter or use the old one ?

Hi Harry. That's a very good question and a very interesting and valid point. It's most controversial as to whether or not this actually necessary. I think the best thing is for me to pool some data and other peoples views and make a video on the findings. Personally, I tend to favour your view on this but I do know of others who insist on its benefits. Keep watching this space because I will have the video out as soon as I can get to it. I've got a list of other videos to do from requests, that I am currently working on, then I will get to it. Many thanks. Craig
