- In this video we use an old John Deere Manure spreader to feed our cows. There's a lot of options when it comes to how you feed your cows and I just wanted to show one of the ways we do it. Hope you enjoy the video.
Ingenious re-purposing of a machine and thoughful dual-purpose feeding-manure spreading technique. Well done Luthi! Top man!
Thanks for the comment Sage! Good to hear from you again.
My Father Had A John Deere Manure Spreader Like Yours But Was Much Older. When You Were Moving The Paddle Rotated And Chain Drive Deck Moved Towards The Rear To Feed The Paddle. He Used It Occasionally For Manure But Mainly For Wood Chips. He Did A lot Of Logging & Chipping On The Farm And Would Blow The Chips From Chipper Into It And Then Drive Through The Woods To Spread Them Out Evenly.
Great Video ! Again. This Brough Back A lot Of Memories. Thanks For Sharing.
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
That's a great idea n u will like the cab have watch dairy farm here in Texas make a rack on a flat bed or trailer so they can turn the big squares on their side n use a winch or cylinder to be able to drop blocks (flakes) of hay in their feeders hope yall get warm soon
Thanks for the comment! I hope we get warm here soon and it quits snowing. It was -30 this morning, nothing wanted to start.
Well done and thank you for sharing. Great office you work in. Beautiful part of the country.
Thanks for commenting! It really is hard to beat the view up here, I could do without the snow and cold sometimes though. It was -20 this morning!
Who would have thought? I have a Haybuster bale processor and I love it but heck I could have used the manure spreader. Another good one.
Thanks! I thought it was a good one to share. Maybe you can trade in your hay buster on a manure spreader haha
That a brilliant idea with the spreading of the bales, seen a farmer do it in scotland with silage, simple and works so well.
We were really surprised by how well it worked. Are you from over that way by Scotland?
@@LuthiRanchWY I'm from Co.Cork,ireland.
We had the chance to visit Ireland last November. My sister and her husband are working in Dublin. We did a small road trip over to the Cliffs of Moher then south to Killarney and did the Ring of Kerry road. You have a beautiful country.
@@LuthiRanchWY we sure have, all along the west coast is outstanding natural beauty from Cork to Donegal, but the whole island is also awash with drugs unfortunately.
Brilliant idea, love your videos!
Thanks for the comment and your support!
That’s an excellent idea. Well done
Thank you, it surprising how well it works.
That’s works pretty slick 👍🇺🇸
Thanks! I thought so also.
Great idea and very effective!
Thanks! I’m happy with how it works
Looks like the cats meow. Stay warm and safe.
Its surprising how well it works! I will do my best
Your videos helped me a lot in my cattle breeding in Poland 👍Lots of interesting simple solutions.
Best wishes.!
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad some of our videos have helped you out. Thanks for watching all the way from Poland!
What a great idea .
It seems to work pretty good
I like it- great idea
It’s surprising how well it works
Very nice!
Thanks!
Works really good
I was surprised how well it works
Very good mate
Thanks!
An awesome innovation!
Seems to work pretty good
I agree with sage, great idea bud
Thanks! I have to give the credit to my dad though. He tried it out one year when I asked him to feed my cows while we went on a vacation.
@@LuthiRanchWY Lol dads hey we can always learn cheers bud really enjoy your channel
@@DIYVariety thanks for the support!
We would pick up corn silage with our manure spreader in winter from our dairy neighbors...nice way to feed.
I was surprised how well it worked out. Glad we weren’t the only ones to give a manure spreader a try
i do the very same thing but if you stack them ontop of each other it will do even a metter job of mixing. Also I have very good luck running mine at an idle.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve been really surprised how well it works
heck yeah works pretty dang slick. wish we didnt have all the mud in Ky. sure would be nice to feed like that
I’ve always said I’d rather deal with the snow over the mud
Oh yeah
That works really well
Do you have to be moving forward for the cart to run the rotating disks on the back, ?, or does that run off the pto ?
Thanks for another great video
Really nice your heard is now up near the farm buildings
How did you go with the stray deers ?
Sorry I should have mentioned that but the beaters run off of the PTO. The elk are still a huge problem, we’ve been killing some and trying to scare them off but they keep coming back.
Great ideal
Thanks! It works out pretty good
That's a cool setup dude. Also the new case IH tractor you forgot to tell us about . Those cattle are living the high life.
The Case has actually been around the ranch for around 10 years. It’s my dads cousins but they do a lot of equipment sharing so we use it on occasion.
@@LuthiRanchWY Just kidding about the Case IH but it looks new. Is that smaller than the DA 7085? Great new use for old spreader. And less work than doing the hammer job on round bales.
@@robertrpenny haha it’s alot easier than the hammer job on the round bales. The case is 115 HP and the DA is only 85 HP
@@LuthiRanchWY I thought CaseIH looked smaller but looks can be deceiving. I guess it walks softly and carries a big stick. Do you guys ever use the DA 9130?
@@robertrpenny Yes, we don’t use it much in the winter but we use it a lot in the summer. It’s hooked up to a Case 4 by 4 baler most of the time.
Gives another meaning to "repurposing" LOL. Dose a great job to boot! How have you been doing with the elk herd coming to dinner?? Hope you've been able to slow them down. Good post Bryan!!
Thanks! The elk are still causing alot of damage. We have been killing some and trying to scare them out but they keep coming in.
Great video. Can you control the flow rate of that spreader or is that a newer feature?
We do have a hydraulic box that will control the flow rate. We don’t have it on this tractor though so you just have to feather the controls to get the right speed out of it
How would that work with a round bale. They are generally less prone to flaking and could put more pressure onto the beaters. Have you had a chance to try it with the round bales?
I don’t think it would work all that well with a round bale, but we have never tried it. I think it would be a lot harder on the machine and not come out very even.
Slick as a peeled onion! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
🤟
the 3-way bales I assume you buy. the others are yours?
I did have to buy the 3-way this year but we have put it up ourselves before also. All the other bales are ones we put up this year
Sorta looked like it was beating the leaves off the alfalfa, but your critters seem to be cleaning it up fine, so i guess its not! Pretty slick, I’ve often wondered how people feed the big squares, I only ever been around em once, and had to feed em off a flatbed trailer with a spud fork. That sucked.
Haha I’ve fed them that way plenty of times before also. I enjoy feeding that way when the snow isn’t so deep.
I tried that with round bales and it didn’t work as good as yours does with square bales
Thanks for sharing
Haha I’m sure it ran a little rough with the round bales in it
Custom Elk Feeder
Haha the elk have been taking enough hay as it is.
Greetings grom Poland
Thanks for watching all the way from Poland! Are you in agriculture also in Poland?
Wondering of you have ever used it on round bales
Never tried it with round bales, I don’t know how well it would work.
@Luthi Ranch just curious we donot use big squares n was just curious if it would feed round bales any way we r having are jan n fed cold spell 21-23 highs ice snow sleet n North wind real feels from 5-12
It was 68 last sat but hope yall r doing allright n cold better
@@raymooney6506 I don’t think it would work as nice with round bales and might be kind of hard on the machine
I was a little worried that there might be an over-eager beef trying to get at the hay while it's at the business end of that contraption!
Haha I’ve worried about that a few times too but they seem to keep their distance. It’s loud enough that they don’t want to go investigate too bad
Works slick , I think also , how r your pet elk doing ? 🤪todd
The elk are still causing a lot of damage, we’ve been killing some and trying to keep them scared out but they keep coming back every night.
do you feel like you have less waste by spreading it out like that? I have been using round bale feeders i am not sure they are worth it
I have much less waste. I’ve fed with round and square feeders before and we still do but they pull so much out and stomp on it that you waste a lot. This way I only feed the exact amount the cows need for that day and they clean it right up, the only downside is you have to feed every day. If you try and feed enough for a couple days this way they will just lay and stomp on the remainder
@@LuthiRanchWY I only have 11 mother cows and I am just lazy enough I don't feed everyday. I do have a little feedlot and have to feed those little devils corn everyday. Good luck with the cow herd
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 thank you. I hope you guys are doing well in your neck of the woods.
@@LuthiRanchWY We are having more snow than any winter in the last 20 years. I am not complaining but I am ready for spring. It should be a good year for the hay fields and summer mountain cow pastures.
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 I believe it. I haven’t seen this much snow up here in awhile. I’m a little worried about flooding this spring if things warm up too quick.
Nice hat
Haha thank you it keeps me warm
@@LuthiRanchWY what's the name of that style?
Mines a Wyoming Trader Rancher Hat but it’s pretty similar to a Stormy Kromer
Mountain lion urine off google on clothe rags tied to hot wire to keep the elk away from your hay, worth a try.
I’m willing to try anything right now
It don’t get better than that
Hard to beat
I use a bale processor some. Only thing about a processor is the alfalfa leaves are ground up and blow away where your spreader doesn't do that. your spreader wouldn't spread a round bale though
Thanks for the comment. No our spreader wouldn’t be able to spread a round bale. We do have an older Dew-Eze bale processor that we can do round bales in but I’ve just been unrolling the bales so far
@@LuthiRanchWY it looks like it works great and I wish I'd have thought of that
@@davidgamber9956 I have to give the credit to my dad. He thought of it a few years ago when I asked him to feed my cows while we went on vacation.
