The 1980s were a great time for cartoon characters like Alvin and the Chipmunks, Jem and the Holograms, and Inspector Gadget to shine on the small screen. There have been lots of hilarious animated shows from the 80s like Ducktales, Looney Tunes, and Thundercats that helped define the decade, but which characters from these shows stood out the most? Who is the best character from the 1980’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo or Donatello? Will He-Man or She-Ra make the list?
For this list, we’re looking at the cartoon characters that helped define the decade and are well remembered as being the best that animated TV had to offer in the 1980s.

I can't think of anyone who had a better voice for Garfield than Lorenzo Music. His tone was perfect.
What about Frank Walker?
I thought that was Jim Davis.
@@TheAutisticCapricorn811 Jim Davis created the strip. Interestingly, Thom Huge, who played Jon, was a friend of Jim's from college who never acted until then.
@@deonhallback9522 Frank Welker can do some great voices but Lorenzo Music cannot be outdone. Listen to when he played Carlton on "Rhoda."
@@deonhallback9522 he & bill Murray basically doe impressions of him
The man behind Optimus Prime's voice is also a huge contributing factor to his popularity. Long live Peter Cullen!
So glad I grew up in the 80s...best shows ever
Yes👍
Yup agreed with you.. Its like my age cut into 32 years while watching this hahahha
I'm lucky and glad I was born during the 80s.
I always thought that Optimus deserved a talk show like Space Ghost... it could be called Optimus Prime Time
No. That already ruined Space Ghost. Optimus does not deserve that
This needs to be a thing.... This would be awesome....
Uh
He just needs to give dad advice.
Derp😏
Not surprised that Optimus Prime topped the list. I think Inspector Gadget and Garfield should be higher up on the list.
I had nostalgia even though I am a 90's kid but I think I was part of the last generation of kids who had the chance to see these wonderful cartoons for the last time in tv
no Danger Mouse, a British legend of a superhero cartoon. one of every British kids absolute favourites
Great one
Only USA stuff here sadly. I wanted to see Dangermouse too.
Thomas is no. 1 in top 10 uk animation no pun intended
thomas the tank engine.....
Love watching Danger Mouse on old school Nickelodeon!
Ahh, Scrooge. Love him, and his glorious voice!
Rip Alan Young.

Wow guys! This is a NEW series. We're looking at all the best cartoon characters from TV from decades gone by :) Check back tomorrow for the 90s! That'll be a good one, Friday will see the 2000s covered and by Saturday we'll be looking at what Cartoon Characters have left an impression on us in the 2010s so far!
Awesome
yay
you did this but you haven't done best animated television shows of all time yet
You have made two (or even three) staringly stunning omissions (and hope that you will correct these in a future update). In no particular order Willy Fog (Around the World With Willy Fog, Willy Fog 2, 1983 - 1989), Dogtanian (Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, The Further Adventures of Dogtanian 1985 - 1989) and Esteban (The Mysterious Cities of Gold 1986, 2012)
I LOVE this list, I just gotta watch it again so I can show you how it's done.
Optimus Prime : "The race isn't over yet, Maggot-tron"
Garfield speaks to me on a spiritual level, I know I'm not alone
Antonio Garcia uh oh, we have a baiter i must follow protocol.
g8 b8 m8
I agree with you I love Garfield
My mother bought me the Garfield's first book when it came out! She went on a trip to NY and got it for me before anyone of my friends in Ohio heard of him. I still have the book to this day! LOVE me some Garfield!
I'll always love Garfield (whether it's in comic form or cartoon form)!
Louis Mur Bustillos i 😍😍😍😍😍 Garfield
It is really great how they try to keep Optimus Prime's voice the same throughout the different Transformers series.
With Inspector Gadget, it was typically Penny and Brain who would crack the cases, while Gadget would bumble around and get credit.
Not to mention that Penny Gadget end up being Damsel in Distress material. Not just in the series but also in Internet Fanart & Fanfiction.
Garfield should actually be number one. The fat cat sold more merchandise, his TV specials broke records, inspiring the network CBS to develop a weekly series and the fact that Garfield's popularity was at it's Zenith during the decade, eclipses everything on that list.
I agree. He's an awesome character.
R.I.P. Alan Young.
Omg He-Man Garfield, inspector Gadget duck tales, the chipmunks are still my favorite thanks to tv reruns
Ah Smurfette, the Smurfs town bike.
Wow HAHAHAHA
Amazing there was only one Baby Smurf
My mother was born in the 80s and when I was young she started showing me some of the shows that she grew up with, and never since then I’ve been an 80s fan, best moment ever!
Cant wait for the 90's on these generational lists
I smell Bart or Homer Being #1
+Jose “Krazy Hatter” Moreno of course
+Jose “Krazy Hatter” Moreno you smell bad
nope, it's Pikachu
homer I hope as 1. and didn't think pokemon but yes! hope daria makes it in
Optimus as #1! Yes! Also Chris Latta (I believe I got the name right) was a great voice for cartoons with Cobra Commander and Starscream headlining his credentials.
I've watched all these cartoons in the 1980's & I still like Optimus Prime the best. :)
Lion-O should have been second place to Optimus, at least.
Inspector gadget was voiced by Don Adams from get smart
No he is voiced by Ivan sherry and his assentors are also voiced by the same actor
@@hugeluigifan2236 ivan sherry is the voice actor of gadget in the modern series(2015-2018), but Don Adams was the orginal voice actor of gadget in the orginal inspector gadget series(1983-1986).
Don Adams in the original series as well as the voice behind brain in the live action movie with Matthew Broderick but ironically it was a spoof of Get Smart.
5:22 I grew up watching Inspector Gadget, as well as DuckTales.
They all was my favorites as a 80's kid
Mine, too. I always loving the 1980s cartoons no matter what I'm aged. Besides it's the golden age of animation and entertainment. People of the bad generation should watch this video about how we loved the 1980s. Great vid, WatchMojo.
Ditto. I was born in 1981, so I grew up with all these.
this is accurate.... best list so far for an 80s kid... please high five the team that put this together
Inspector Gadget will always be my favorite.
I'm glad I grew up watching Inspector Gadget.
@@ARTSONICFAN990 Hard to believe that cartoon came out in 1982. The year the Millennial generation began.
8:46 "The rice was okay, but they forgot to cook the fish". That's odd. I remember watching "The Garfield Show" in the 2010's, and that cartoon show revealed that Garfield has an intense hatred for anchovies.
That's a reference to sushi, not anchovies.
He does hate anchovies.... but he likes other fish, such as the sushi....
Turtles were only in the 1990’s for Australia
When you do the Top 10 Memorable TV Cartoon Characters of the 1990 you better remember to add Optimus Primal to the list
Already there
Sounds like Peter Cullen was channeling John Wayne when doing the Optimus Prime voice. I never noticed that until now.
Nope not John Wayne, you weren't even close, if you watched his interviews, Peter Cullen was channeling his brother Larry Cullen who was a Captain in the Vietnam war
Let's play Cake Roulette
Every person who likes gets a cake
Yay cake
i didn't get one...
abdikadir hashi Your cake has delivery problems. 5 minutes and your cake is in your house.
Don't put coconut in mine
somewhere around Glados is uploading a maniacallaughter.mp3 soundtrack.
Garfield for president ! !
Optimus Prime is where he deserves to be: at #1!!
Prime cant stand up to he man. Hell he man can toss a moon. Prime cant touch that feet.
Just watching this list totally reminds me of Robot Chicken.
that's because Robot Chicken always lampoons the 80's more than anything else.
Ik, I marathon through the show now and then
Narwhal cool, so have I. What's your favorite sketch from then?
Probably the Looney Tunes 8 Mile parody from the episode Rodigitti
When I saw Strawberry Shortcake my first thought was Bitch Pudding!
Roy Fokker from Robotech. He was the big brother we all wanted and looked up to. His death was one of the few in cartoons in the 80s that broke our hearts. Well, mine at least.
Robotech taught kids toons could be so much more in story, music, plot.
As long as Optimus is #1 I'm happy.
Out of all the decades the 80s should have two lists. Most of the characters are having shows or movies again and also make most of us 80s kids have memories of getting up at the crack of dawn getting a bowl of cold cereal and turning the TV on and watching until 1 in the afternoon. The 80s have the most iconic characters
- Raphael - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Inspector Gadget & Dr. Claw
- Peter Venkman - The Real Ghostbusters
- Garfield - Garfield & friends
- Teddy Ruxpin
- Optimus Prime
- Homer Simpson
Donatello and Leonardo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Dr. Claw
Egon Spengler The Real Ghostbusters
She-Ra
Duke GI Joe A Real American Hero
Lisa Simpson
I wish I could relive in the past? So I can watch my old school cartoons again in 1989 when I was 5 years old because I miss all the cartoons back in day I miss so much! 😢😭❤👍
I miss the good old days too, back when 2D animation was still popular, before 3D took over.
So much childhood nostalgia! Use to watch all of these. Except the Smurfs and Chipmunks. And still watch them when I can. Shame no one from the original My Little Pony got a mention. Or Rainbow Brite. But glad to see my fav as number one!
Rainbow Brite is in there.
Oh yeah. Didn't even see her because it was such a quick clip lol.
funny. the only 80's shows on this list that i've seen are smurfs and chipmunks. the ones you havent seen.
what's rainbow brite. 😕
Google it.
11:08 Back when Teletoon Retro was on television... 😏😏
Great list and so many great characters not mentioned. I loved growing up in the 80’s.
This was pretty damn good, I miss great lists like this from WM (cause they have been severely lacking for a LONG TIME) I think the only 80's cartoons I watched were Ducktails, Inspector Gadget, TMNT (here and there) and Garfield. I didn't know they were 80's cartoons till I got older cause I saw them when they were repeated on channels like Disney and Nickelodeon. I can't wait for the 90's list, that decade had the best cartoons and TV shows in general IMO.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles he-man G I Joe Garfield Transformers inspector gadget Smurfs Alvin cartoon heaven😍👌👍❤😊
I'm just happy Thundercats got an honorable mention, that was my show :).
Thunder, thunder, thundercats!
+JONATHAN PINZON HOOOOOOOO!!!
"Sword of Omans, give me sight beyond sight." Lion-O is the best. Fuck Watchmojo for putting him in honourable mention. He should've been number 1.
I agree! Lion-O should've been in the Top 10 for sure and in my book #1! Thundercats Hoooo!
+lollypop2414 In my book he and the Ninja Turtles tie for 1st place, otherwise I understand the appeal of Optimus Prime, I won't argue his status as one of the most popular kid related things in the 80's :). I mean there are still Transformers movies and cartoons to this day. They may not be all good, but they are making them.
this should have been a top 20.Too many great characters
WWWHHHAAATTT!!!!!?????? THE THUNDERCATS did not make it on the main list!!??They were awesome!!!Not eve the animated C.O.P.S (Central Organization of Police Specialists)???
Let guess, Optimus Prime is number one. YES! I knew it.
We dont care if its out of order, please do the 60s and 70s!!!!
It is unlikely. I would be pleasantly surprised if they did do that but the 70's and 60's were terrible decades for cartoons. In the 70's everyone was trying to recycle the same formula for many cartoons particularly Scooby Doo. And the 60's was kind of trying to be the old Warner Bros. and Disney cartoons with weird and bad spin on it.
Well....for the most part I would agree with that assessment. I was born in 1962, and many of my favorite cartoons were the re-runs of (edited) theatrical shorts like the Warner Bros. characters (Bugs Bunny et al) or Tom & Jerry. But there were a few I did enjoy back then, like Jonny Quest (later magnificently lampooned by The Venture Bros.), Wacky Races (and spin-off Dick Dastardly's Flying Circus), Space Ghost, Herculoids, earlier Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound.
As you got into the 70s you had quite a bit of cloning going on. How many shows with casts similar to the basic set-up of Scooby Doo came out? But you still had shows like Wait Till Your Father Gets Home (Hanna-Barbera's attempt to recapture the more adult market of the original Flintstones), Inch High Private Eye and The Super Friends....gotta love the Ted Knight voice-overs ("Meanwhile, at The Hall of Justice..."). You had more shows that touched on trends, like Evel Knievel (Devlin), or the Kung-Fu genre (Hong Kong Phooey) while keeping up with the musical genre made popular with The Archies (Snaggletooth, itself a parody of Curly Howard of the Three Stooges).
I would mention other shows that were popular in the 60s and 70s, like Speed Racer, Gigantor, Astroboy and Kimba, but those would probably be better served in a list devoted to classic anime (Mach Go Go Go, Tetsujin 28-go, Tetsuwan Atom and Jungle Taitei) so I wouldn't include them in a list that is principally devoted to American cartoons.
Best Era of cartoons! Yes please. Before all the PC crap that neutered what writers could do.
@@xmoore5659 what? Hannah Barbera elevated the 1960s as did Woody Woodpecker, Popeye, Tom and Jerry, the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show! And let's not forget Speed Racer, Spider-Man and the Marvel Super Heroes!
The '70s had Battle of the Planets and SuperFriends! In Japan, the Shogun Warriors' cartoons were kicking ass!
The '70s h
I loved Alvin and the Chipmunks . I had a whole buncha episodes on VHS
I saw these cartoons in the 90's growing up in that decade
ninja turtles, he man, ducktales, voltron, garfield, alvin and the chipmunks, thundercats, inspector gadget, just so many
My inner kid screamed of joy when saw the first place =)
As a kid who grew up in the 80s, I had a fabulous time....the eighties and the nineties were tight!!!...best decades ever, I think...anyway, I loved he man, gi joe and transformers, but I also loved smurfs because of grouchy....he was my favorite one and the funniest I thought because he always had a mean mug and would always begin every sentence with I hate...those were truly memories!!!
I love Inspector Gadget....
Except for Smurfette I agree on this one completly.
I also liked Bravestar from that era.
I did too. The episode The Price helped nail home my oath to never do drugs.😎
Grumpy Bear should have been more than honorable mention! He was the only Care Bear who wasn't smiling all the time!
I would have put Starscream at number 9 instead of Cobra Commander but then again we're talking about the same person
Ahhhh...watching ink instead of megapixels. Good times. Good times.
You call it 80s, I call it early 90s reruns.
reruns of the 90s top 10 that why don't you
yup I stayed watching reruns of Garfield and friends the turtles and inspector gadget not so much the smurfs but they were in heavy rotation on tv as well.
i cant believe these days no one wants to use a color pencil and paper to do realistic cartoon , not lego pixar robotic simple shit
I was born in the early 90's. So I couldnt Agreed more.
I watched all of those growing up but the one thing I still think is a bit odd is the Ninja Turtles are in the sewers of New York yet the talk like California surfers kinda funny how they did that.
I love this list, I even agree about number 1, but I think Thun-Dar should have gotten a mention
Garfield and Mikie should've been higher. they're just as memorable as Optimus, though nothing can beat that big red 18 wheeler. that and Optimus gives the greatest quotes of any cartoon character. my top 4 would've been:
1. Optimus
2. Garfield
3. Mikie
4. Inspector Gadget.
Soundwave the best Transformer ^^
This has got to be the coolest list that Watch Mojo has ever put together
Was expecting a pre 1980s list to include Looney Tunes & Hanna Barbera, but oh well
0:53 AngryJoe's biggest enemy, corporate commander :))))
Memories xP
Lol
Cheetara from Thundercats was better than Jem and a much better role model. Strong, athletic and wise alone with a realistic healthy physique that was not overly sexualized or skin and bones.
Amen to that
I’m Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I’ve learned after 21 years - you never know WHAT is gonna come through that door.
Cobra Commander has a tongue that catches flies?? Did I miss something?
Michaelangelo is my favourite ninja turtle
Do the 1990s next!
ya please
They will be doing the 90's tomorrow :D
you think?
Hmm... I'm guessing Spongebob(or one of his buddies), Rugrats, and Animaniacs will be among that list
Then the 2000's.. then the 2010's!
I argee this list I love the 80s and 90s :)
Im just happy one of the Ninja Turtles got on the list........... I woulda went bonkers if none of them were mentioned :) haha Cant wait for the next one :)
Again,ditching the 70's and 60's...
Considering most people using UA-cam are 18-34 nobody really cares
I care.
+Matt Murdock obviously not true
So what that UA-cam are mostly 18-34? I am 17 and I love the WACKY RACES series! One of my favorite ones. You have to understand if a series released on a certain year it doesn't mean it won't be watched a few decades later. In Lithuania, literally all popular series from the 20th century were published in the 2000s.
Maybe the people sending in most of the topics grew up in the 80's.
Optimus Prime will always be the greatest of al TV Characters of all time
Definitely! one of them atleast
Definitely!😎
You forgot Rick Hunter or Roy Folker from Robotech. Also, Lion-o in honorable mentions??? 😒
Besides that, great video ✌🏼️
When He-man was mentioned all I could think of is that video HEYAYAYAYAYA. XD
What about Denver the Last Dinosaur and the Dinosaucers?
holy cow i remember those 2 cartoons wish they were on dvd id buy them
I still remember the theme song.
_DEN-VER, THE LAST DINOSAUR!_ 🎶
Top 10 Memorable TV Cartoon Characters Of The 1990s next!
Already did it
Used to see some of these shows. Great list never will see shows like this caliber now.
Good list. Every last one on this list was my childhood. Wish i can go back to those days, it was so damn awesome!!
I think that Danger Mouse should of been this video.
Let me guess #1 in the 90's will be Homer Simpson since WatchMojo likes the Simpsons so much
The Simpsons started in 89
monkey4gghplaysgames But, Homer isn't on this list. So, I guess he is more popular start in the 90's
+margareth michelina yeah I know I'm just giving you a hard time.
+monkey4gghplaysgames Exactly if the show started in 1989 it makes it a 90s pop culture phenomenon, which means Homer a 90s character.
They base stuff on our opinions not theirs.
In Transformers - "Only Human" a character named "Snake" helps gangsters by transferring the souls (sparks) of Rodimus, Arcee, and Springer into human forms. Which lets the gangsters take control of their robotic bodies. At the end of the episode Snake says "They just don't make terrorists like they used to - COBRA!" Revealing Snake was Cobra Commander. He crossed over to another franchise.
Dat Closeup of Gargumel at 10:41 onda Smurfs got me DEADLMAO!!! 😲☺😁😂😂🤣🤣😭😭😝😆☝🏽😏🕵🏽🙈💀
Hey! Where is gazorpazorpfield???
Who?
its a parody of Garfield in rick and morty
+Kosta Jovanovic it's a parody of Garfield on Rick and Morty
This is the last place I expected to see a reference from Rick And Morty.
+Mordecai true
the only garfield thing I did was read his comics
Optimus is so memorable that WatchMojo didn't put obvious #1 entry first and #2 entry last yet again.
I used to love calling him Gargasmell... Lmao
Dude, your beast is altered...
Dislike for including Jem and Inspector Gadget and nothing from Real Ghostbusters and Voltron.
Yeah it's No Surprise That Prime Made the #1 Spot, After All, He Died for Our Sins!
Cobra commander was one who I appreciated today more than I did as a child as I didn't really catch on to how silly he actually was.
*recalls him ordering his soldiers to fall into traps just to see what happens* :)
I was hoping that The Real Ghostbusters would be on this list.
I never really liked _The Smurfs._
Me either. Expect for Smurfe.
Smurfs, are alright
What about Smurfette?
I disagree the smurfs are awesome
i always thought simon was the oldest
Nah, just more mature than the others
HMM so did I
I thought that they were the same age...
that sounds like it makes sence
They are triplets. Alvin is older than Simon by five minutes, Ted is youngest.
This easily could have been a "Top 20" with this other cartoons added - Kissyfur, The Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, The Glo Friends, Danger Mouse, The Snorks, A Pup Named Scooby Doo, Count Duckula, Pound Puppies, Moondreamers, Popples, Denver The Last Dinosaur, Fraggle Rock.... just to name a few.
Here's my own cartoon characters of the 1980s.
Flight Man from Flight man 1986-1988.
Shocky Dog from Shocky dog 1980-1984.
Charlie, Hannah and Teddy from Space Kids 1984-1987
Baby kitty from Baby kitty and friends 1983-1984
Dark Girl from Dark Girl 1987-1989
The adventures of Larry & Tom 1986-1987 (space kids spin off)
Leo the lion from the wild animals 1984-1987
Bun-Bun from Bun Bun and her popstar Sisters 1984-1986
