Forging the [Coiled Sword] - Dark Souls 3

  • This week Aleksey forges the coiled sword from Dark Soul 3. Along the way he demonstrates a lot of classical blacksmithing techniques and shares some tips and tricks with us that we may not normally use during bladesmithing. He shows how to texture using special dies on the power hammer, how to use an air powered chisel to increase efficiency and much much more. This a great blacksmithing project to create the coiled sword and gives us a break from the standard grind of a bladesmithing project. Hopefully soon we will be making something from Elden Ring!

It definitely makes a huge difference in some instances. Every time I see another channel male a so-called "Damascus" blade (it's actually just pattern welded, but that's a whole other rant,) they do the lazy thing and plasma cut the tip to shape. It sucks because then the pattern in the metal just continues right off the tip of the knife. When you forge the tip the pattern of the metal actually curves with the tip the way it's supposed to. Ilya, unsurprisingly, is the master of this sort of thing.

When you heat treat stainless to 900F using the H900 heat treating method, it turns a beautiful golden bronze color. We only get it up to 43-46 on the Rockwell scale though, and I believe swords have to be a lot harder than that. Still be cool to see a sword made from stainless and heat treated that way though, even if it would be a wall hanger.

Surprisingly not accurate. The Coiled swords edge isnt blunt, just twisted around. The blade would actually be MORE dangerous then your standard blade simply due to the particulars of parrying. With that design, a bladed parry would result more then likely in your blade twisting out of your hand and the Coiled sword slicing happily into your forearm.
Edit: with a solid sheild, this would cease to be an issue, but even then actually blocking with a shield is like to shatter your arm.
