      Kind of funny but I've been thinking of starting my own club too. Its been pretty clear that the direction I want to go (being in a club focused on developing people to fight in tournaments) is not what the locals are into at all. One of the clubs was meeting outside in a park which saved a lot on costs (they changed that recently and their monthly membership fee went up a lot). I'm thinking of using their idea of an outdoor club and just renting a campsite in the woods in one of the state parks and seeing who I can get to show up through meetup and maybe a facebook group. I'll base the format on how I've seen successful fencing clubs run (calisthenics, line drills, daily exercise/talk, then free sparring for people who have the gear) and use the liechtenauer material since I have some nice Tobler books on it. Planning on working out a syllabus during the winter then rolling it out in the spring when it warms up as the gameplan. If noone shows up I can work on my woodcraft skills and go fishing. I will be wearing a longsword scabbard on my back too. Much easier to go through the woods that way and I got sick of sticking the sword on my foot or in the ground when not using it

    If I still lived in England I'd be there. Conversely, if you're ever in Texas...

      Lots of Texas barbecue for sure, and it is different from other barbecue. I have lived in South Carolina before too. I have a guest room with it's own bathroom.

      There's a place that serves avocado margaritas in Texas along with these amazing burgers.
      I'm located in Florida atm but I doubt I'll end up staying here too long.
      As soon as I've got time I want to pursue HEMA.
      I have an interest in Side sword, arming sword, and longsword.

    It is interesting how different your start was different than mine! I started my own HEMA group in Brazil last year with nothing but a bunch of guys willing to learn together (and one of then trying to teach then all). We have limited access to equipment, so we made and still making our own. You showed that you have prepared a lot to start the club and we had a very organic growth. I believe that both types have pros and cons, keep up the good work and good videos!

    I was wondering if you have plans to open up a merch store in the future, I would love to buy one of your club shirts (even though I may not be apart of it) or even just KnightSquire branded shirts. Your content is great, love it man, much love from America.

    I would've watched the one hour video, I would love being in a swords club, so this is a great idea to do when I get home from studying. Btw, you made the video on how to make the training thing, you should go through your sword, where you bought it or if you made it yourself, it would be really interesting. And btw the t-shirts look really cool

    Hoping it goes well dude! I have just set up a small German Longsword group in my local area since the nearest club is 45 mins away in London haha. It mainly consists of me and a few friends and it's essentially a study group but I am hoping everyone puts effort into it and buy the equipment. Any tips on where to start or how to structure training sessions?

    Hi!
    I would recommend you to contact teachers of other clubs, like Matt Easton, David Rawlings or Keith Farrel. They might help you to set up the club and start out teaching, correct some errors and so on.

      +KnightSquire you could ask them if they could come over for a few classes, maybe they can and that could really spring the whole idea forward.

    Awesome video mate!
    I'm from La Plata, Argentina and here the HEMA thing practically doesn't exist jajaja
    A friend and I both want to start to practice but the thing is, finding manuals is
    actually pretty difficult for us, i mean we understand english but german and italian are different subject... so we don't know what use for reference
    Even if I have some base in martial arts, we have never practiced combat with weapons, and the protective gear is veeery expensive for us to afford.
    Using wooden sticks with 0 protection is bad idea :p

    Hey Joel, a friend of mine has started a hema club in brussels Belgium, we started training in a part one day a week, a year and a half later we now train twice a week and are renting a really big gym (about 20 people sparring per session) Hope you guys get there ;)
    Do you only do HEMA or re-enactment too ?

  • @TheDecaystar
    @TheDecaystar 2 роки тому

    30 pounds per session? 30 pounds for every training? Wow. A club membership around here (Denmark) is 10-15 pounds a month, Including 2-3 weekly sessions. Most be considered part of income I'm guessing? Renting location etc etc etc.

      Buy a waster and learn how to move with a sword properly, you can do this (to a point) by watching instuctional youtube videos or by picking up a book, I personally reccommend The AHA Study Guide...
      www.corsairs-wares.com/martial-arts/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1918
      It specifically states it's not to be seen as a way to learn swordsmanship (and this should be true of any book) but with this and some videos to reference, I found it really helpful to at least get my foot in the door.
      After all that, I'm affraid you're on your own my friend. You'll have to either convince a buddy to practice with you or start stepping out of your comfort zone.
      I was very shy when I was younger, then I reached a point where I realized how pointless it was. Some people will like you, and some people will always hate you. What matters is that you get where you need to go, so just do it... regret is far worse a feeling than embarassment.

    Can you do a new HEMA club day one?

  • @jigilo4853
    @jigilo4853 4 роки тому

    If I do have a club near by but i’m not interested in their time period and weapons used, would I be better off just trying to start my own study group or would you recommend learning from another club first and then branching off? Thanks

    • @KnightSquire
      @KnightSquire  4 роки тому +1

      Depends, what period and weapon do you want to study, and what do they study? Depending on what it is it may be worth starting off with them then moving on to specify later...
      If it's way off, then you'll basically have no choice but to go alone. :D
