We designed the B-52G/H in 1956 for high-altitude bombing. But in 1961, in the middle of the Cold War, we redesigned the structure to meet SAC's new more severe usage and service life requirments. These notably included low level terrain avoidance training, often under extreme gust and maneuver conditions. The main reason for the structural longevity is that the usage has not been as severe as was projected. As Chief of Structures Technology at Boeing-Wichita at the time of the redesign. I am honored to say I chose the materials, the analysis methods, and the limiting stress levels for the redesicn. I am now 95 and I am thrilled to see these planes still flying, and projected to do so for many more years.
Wonderful to hear from someone who had such influence in the re-design of these beautiful aircraft. You've made sure these B52s will fly until they are as old as yourself!
It should also be noted that these bombers don't structurally age as quickly as, say, most commercial airliners. Airline companies try to keep their aircraft in the air 24/7 because a commercial aircraft that isn't in the air is a commercial aircraft that isn't making money for the airline company. That puts a lot of wear-and-tear on their airframes. In contrast, these B-52's normally aren't in the air unless there is a training mission or they're moving to a new base or there is some other specific mission for them.
Such a great plane, some of the best years of my life were spent in it. That sound is like no other and even if I go blind, I’ll know what plane it is.
I've seen the B-52 actions in centrail highlands of vietnam, It turns green jungle in to black with large craters that a tank could pull in. 4inf. div. 10th armored 1969.
I got out of these things 30 years ago, and at the time, they were already 30 years old! And, yet, they’re supposed to keep flying for another 30! It’s unbelievable!
What a blistering take off at the edge of light and dark. Hope the mission contributes to global peace and safety🙂 And what a stripes of smoke, is it to remember us they're from the good old days?😉
I have always been fascinated with B52s! Hulking, huge, imposing. Then I went to see one on display to the public in Utica, NY. It was about half the size I thought it would be, maybe as big as a Boeing 747 ( I just looked up dimensions of both, and the B 52 is actually smaller!). Still, magnificent tho.
What a great sight and sound, and smoke! I guess the mounting of the engines in pairs meant that thrust reversers could not be fitted? Hence the drag chute. A shame because it would be cool to see the aircraft disappear in a cloud of its own smoke during the landing roll out!
This is the H model with less smoke than the older D and G models. Watch the older versions took off during the cold war and vietnam wars to compare. The new Rolls Royce engines will be smoke free to satisfy any modern standards.

Great video @bobsurgranny, thanks heaps, question, when they take off the moisture coming over the tops of the wings?, when its about 100 feet up, what causes this please, and how much fuel do they burn
It's an RAF Airbase. It's got the usually compliment of guard houses, gated entry and general restricted access. You're not going to just walk in and nose around.. lol
The black "smoke" is not what you think. They inject water into the fuel system, just before it gets burned in the engines, at various points during flight to increase power. This is what makes the vapor exhaust turn blackish. Also, you have no idea how loud these were back in the day. They are very much quieter now than at that time.
Carpet bombing? Saw one up close in Laos...complete devastation. Dense jungle immediately transformed into a construction zone with nothing left alive. Scary.
Who said it was that rare? This was however the first time they'd flown over Ukraine and apparently pretty damn rare to see three return together like this
Love the b52 but the shit that comes out of those old leviathans is phenomenal im no eco warrior i own a gas guzzling v8 but come on USA update your engine's
That emission is minscule compared to industrial pollution. They also have a water injection system to the engine that raises the power output. You should be jumping on the millions of diesel trucks in the world spewing black smoke everyday. There are only about 60 B-52s in service and very few flying at one time.
