Instead of throwing a tantrum, Wozniacki was calm, articulate and humorous ... under pressure. I can't remember any other player behaving so well when challenging an umpire.

The part where Caroline imitates her grunt is hilarious! Sometimes it's nice to give people a taste of their own medicine.
She shows such powerlessness - just content to forever be dominated by nothing other than emotion - totally incapable of the level of composure or sportsmanship so commonly found in seasoned players at that age.

Before 0:31 Niculescu’s grunt was normal but after 0:31, when she noticed the exchanges were adding up, to distract Caroline and win the point, she started that delayed grunt. It was obvious but it sounded normal to umpire. Well it’s even more embarrassing coming from a professional athlete to comment like that when you obviously did some dirty, shady tricks.
I just realize the late grunting too... what's the point you make that sound after you're hitting the ball, well actually, why made any sound at all, even when you're not hitting that hard...
Aaaaw she and her amazing sportmanship will be missed. She’s such a joy to hear her talk eloquently in heated moments, no complaints whatsoever against umpires/officials and such a kind spirited, classy girl… 🥲

Grunting is worse now including the men’s side. The men grunt after the ball is hit. It’s ridiculous and they should do something about it.
Agree. One thing are a sound as you make a power shot but if its every time it´s making it annoying to watch/hear and when coming deliberately delayed as in the clip the umpires needs to step up and stop it fast.

Good point but i think it was the timing of her grunts, doing them just as wazi was about to hit her shot, so very late and probably unnecessary.
Sabalenka is loud, but it’s as she’s hitting the ball, not after the ball has bounced onto the opponent’s side.

I find Wozniacki an annoying player, but she is 100% right here. 100%, and top players(even Alcaraz), have these delayed grunts. This should not be allowed.
I replayed it several times, and there were at least 2 times when she grunted after she hit the ball! I have to agree with Wozniak. But I don’t know if she was trying to get in her head, but I think it can be distracting, and a possible violation! I’m glad Niculescu stopped.

Niculescu just breathes out on the backhand when she's hitting the ball (and so grunts while hitting), and on the forehand slice she holds her breath at contact and then breathes out (grunts) right after. It's just the nature of Niculescu's strokes and I doubt it was on purpose.
If you keep telling yourself that without watching the clip you might end up convincing yourself....Watch the clip. Caroline clearly had a valid point and as she said, it stopped after she had made the umpire aware and referred to the rulebook. Just play fair and you wont be caught playing unfair!

No. The timing was inconsistent. Sometimes it was on contact. And sometimes it was a prolonged sound after contact.

Most of the time Niculescu isn't interesting, she is a spoiler. Sodt ball after soft ball, waiting for her opponent to miss. Horrible to watch, and even worse to play against I'd assume.

I agree with Caro that those grunts were starting way too late to be a physical response, and even more so way too long. At 1:25 she was …moaning… even when the ball bounced on Caro’s side. It’s awkward to watch and I wish tennis did better in shutting that down cuz it does hamper viewership. But I disagree with Caro’s handling of it. She should have immediately notified the chair ump the first time she noticed it. I also wish she directly addressed Monica and called her out.
I think saying something the first time she did it would be harsh, sometimes things happen on a tennis court, people make mistakes. I think she was right to call it out once Niculescu had done it a lot of times and it was really frustrating her.
As soon as Wozniacki would start losing she would complain.
