Ok I think the WTA needs to get rid of the number of times you can get treatment for an injury. As a trainer I'd have a hard time seeing a player in that much pain and sit idly by. As soon as she hit the ground I'd be running trying to give her some relief or something.
There's always the option for retirement (match, not career). No one is forcing Wozniacki to continue on here. I also think the entourage has the ability to enforce a doctor stop if the athlete is really pushing dangerously hard. The problem is, injuries are part of the sport and suppose to be part of the athlete conditioning obligation, especially cramps, which basically means running out of gas. There are actually athletes in ATP who complained that cramping should not be treated as injury at all, because it takes away the advantage of other athletes that actually has better stamina.
Yeah and, then imagine how many players would abuse the “I’ve got cramp” card 🙄 It’s a good rule and, she could always retire from the game if it got serious.
1) It's there to prevent abuse, you don't wanna see what some players will do to get free time off the match to throw away their opponent 2) If you're constantly needing medical care to go through a match then you're no longer playing the match, a forfeit is what you should call for, not a doctor.

VeriTroll Worthy jr. Nonetheless she got back up and finished the game, how long did James have to recover? Plenty of time. She wasn't lying on the ground for ten minutes, she was down for about one minute. Her legs gave out and she was playing outside in like 100 degree heat. And the tennis players play longer, spend more time out in the hot sun. You're right there is no comparison. That girl is in better condition and has way more tolerance for pain than Lebron James. As you may or may not know, women typically have a much higher tolerance for pain than men. I know it must hurt to know that a woman can be tougher than a man(I'm a guy BTW) but this is the case with Wozniaki and James.
Ten years later and it's still impressive! What a trooper...cramps in your calf are one thing, thigh cramps are a whole new level. I've used ice packs and ended up punching the back of my thigh just to get it to release. And I don't even play tennis. lol
If you have a cramp you need to use the muscle opposite of the one cramping to relieve it. For example, if your calf muscle is cramping, grab the front of your foot and push forward towards your hand. This will use the muscle on top of the front of the leg (Shin) and that will release the muscle underneath (Calf). It's a simple technique that will work on other cramps. The idea is to make the body release one muscle because it is shifting to the opposite one. I saw a doctor doing this. It works.
Oh its a thing. Cool. I didnt know but thats what i do when i had cramps. The pain was unbearable and i tried anything to get rid of it. Thats when i realised that doing this helps.
I know this is a long time later but how do you do this, when 4-5 muscles are cramping all at once. I've had what happened to her 3 times now and when you go to stretch the 1st one cramping, another cramps in totally different area. Go to stretch opposite of that and another in different area. Imagine 4-5 muscles cramping all at once like an attack for 1 hour like this. It's excruciating and terrifying because you can't find a position to stretch anything and you end up falling to the ground and flailing around..she mentions in another video she needed IV fluids.. it's terrifying.
@@mikecorazza adding to what I said above. It is extremely important to warm up and stretching muscles before commencing any exercise routine. I trained martial arts over many years and found that to be crucial to not having cramps. Also, at the end of exercising, it's equally important to warm down and do light stretching. DON'T skip doing these two simple steps. They will also help in the long term in avoiding serious or permanent injuries. Another trick to help, as used by the SAS, is to finish with a cold shower. It stimulates blood flow and healing. Good luck! Cheers!
@PJ thanks for the follow up all these years later! And totally understand and agree with what you said. But please know I've played years of competitive tennis and had the routine of all the things you said. Even was hydrating the night before, moring of matches, even prioritized sleep because I've noticed if I play hardcore sports and sleep poorly that night, I'll wake up more sore because I know muscles need sleep for recovery too. I could list you all the things before, during and after matches and it's way more than anybody I know does. And none of them cramp. Again, I'm not talking about 1 muscle cramp. I can deal with that. I'm talking about a series of events in what is an hour of my body attacking itself. My doctors are baffled and admitted true source of cramps is speculation. And they said what I'm expressing is more serious.
Andrew Woodhead those that play football have to sprint now move side to side ... sprinting will tear way more muscle and the more you move the worse the cramp gets
As a dancer, I experienced so many cramps and I applause this girl for still going because I have to take at least 5-10 minute breaks to stop crying and at least heal the pain a bit. At some point I wanted to give up but this girl is so strong for still going and I hope she’s doing well right now.
No, if wozniacki decided to keep playing even though she was in debilitating pain, it's not her opponent's obligation to play nice bc she's hurting. She decided she was well enough to play the full game, drop shots and all
Tiffany Sherii when I was 15 I lost my first boxing match (25-0) due to a cramp. I was so scared and literally thought I was dying. I have no idea how she managed to push through that pain, it’s actually insane (ooh that rhym3$).
What is she supposed to do though? I'd guess she's upset she lost to a player who was falling apart. Also, she didn't do nothing wrong (while not being sympathetic, as you said). Offering a handshake and saying ''good game / congrats '' it's the simplest thing you can do.
Mad respect, I’ve had serious cramps (calves) while playing sport and had to drag myself off the court for five minutes to allow the game to continue till I could walk again. This young lady gets up after 20 seconds and somehow keeps going.
lizzyw8 I beleive that is the point. By refusing treatment to the player they force them to forfeit the match to stop them from further injuring themselves.
I know what she was feeling. These muscle cramps are true killers and there is NOTHING you can do except to become paralyzed and breath..., if you can still do that !!! The pain is so intense that you feel like if your muscle is being pulled out from your bones....! Still, Caroline fought like a real champion and finally, she won the match. Bravo, Caroline ! We all love you.
In case anyone is wondering, you can't take an injury timeout for cramping. It's considered a conditioning issue and fitness is part of the game. You can receive treatment during changeovers, but not beyond that. There's not a lot the trainers can do anyway. The cramps are a result of dehydration, which would take at least a half hour to rectify.
She's not injured, this is basically being very tired and needing a rest. If her opponent is fitter (or plays in a way that isn't as physically demanding) then there's no justification for having a rest just for that. Respect to her for pushing through though, and this is the only time that screaming when hitting a shot is acceptable. Please make note Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka.

Wow, she was bloody tough. Cramping is extremely painful and I can’t imagine cramping so bad that you collapse like that
Ok I think the WTA needs to get rid of the number of times you can get treatment for an injury.
Cramps are not considered an injury. They are considered a conditioning issue. If you're not fit to play, you retire.
Yeah and, then imagine how many players would abuse the “I’ve got cramp” card 🙄
It’s a good rule and, she could always retire from the game if it got serious.
Hey they gotta keep the croud entertained, can't get em bored. Not good for the damn business..
1) It's there to prevent abuse, you don't wanna see what some players will do to get free time off the match to throw away their opponent
2) If you're constantly needing medical care to go through a match then you're no longer playing the match, a forfeit is what you should call for, not a doctor.
I know exactly what that feels like, and it’s unbelievably scary
I used to get them in my calf, it really is scary your muscle tightens so much it feels like its going to tear itself off the bone. I havent had it happen in a long time luckily.
davidca96 I used to wake up out of bed in the middle of night with that cramp and just fall off in agony lmao
jjmah7 Yup I have it right now on both legs HOW IS IT GOING AWAY, I litteraly cant sprint or run
At least less dangerous for a tennis player than for the open water swimmer

are you freakin kidding me? can only be treated 3 times? what kind of sadistic person doesnt help someone , and gives them a delay of game...thats so insane
Cramping in tennis is regarded as 'break down in fitness and conditioning'.
It is not considered as an incurred injury while playing tennis - that is why it is banned and against the rules of tennis to offer any treatment or have an injury timeout because of cramps.
i mean i understand that concept, bu its just crazy to not help a person in pain.. its not like they do it on purpose,
arlichar11 It's up to each athlete to bring the conditioning up to par by at least keep hydrating. If not, they will lose painfully - literally.
Ummm...There are people who will do ANYTHING to win, including faking something like this, to buy time, which is why we must have rules.
+magnetmac1 ...or WIN painfully. Literally.
Her victory is really deserved ! What a brave player ! Congratulations.
True Fighter traits!!.....This video really pumps me up to never give up👍

I'm sorry but don't make jokes about cramps is freaking painful. I get cramps not doing anything, we'll playing games sitting down and I like wtf, I can't move, but when it's over I thank GOD I got through it. :D

Wow zvonareva was frosty af at the handshake. not exactly what you'd expect
Zvonareva acted like a complete bitch at the end....couldn't even cross the net to give hand shake. Typical Russian.
nope, be fair. it threw her momentum off. if she was being a bitch she wouldve complained to the authorities and the umpire may have forfeited the game.
i dont know that seemed like a normal handshake to me.
She didn't have time for the drama. She lost the game but shook hands anyway out of respect. I don't have time for drama either so go make me a sammich.
she lost 0-6 in the first set, then eventually lost to a person suffering from full blown cramps, so she doesn't even deserve to make it to the next round.
she cried less than lebron
Women have a higher pain tolerance on average. Idk about nowa days tho..
Lebron also has ALOT more muscle mass than her, which in turn...ding ding ding causes a stronger contraction.

As a former D1 player, who had a full body cramp after 3 matches in Chattanooga, TN in early September, and got escorted to the ER, I felt every bit of the pain she has gone through and it's truly the most pain i've been in physically in my life
I remember watching this match against Vera Zvonareva when Caroline Wozniacki was able to fight through a full-body cramp to achieve Victory, When I saw Caroline get her hard fought Victory, I said to myself that this young tennis player had the makings of a future Grand Slam Champion. I am so happy for Caroline, Her family & Friends, and all her fans around the world that finally the Australian Open Grand Slam was won today, I want to pay my respects to Simona Halep for Her Amazing performances throughout this Australian Open, Counting this Final that was played today, She was In 3 "WTA match of the year" candidate matches in my opinion, The others being her victories over AngelIque Kerber & Lauren Davis. I will be rooting for Halep hard to score her breakthrough Slam at the French Open. Both Caroline Wozniacki & Simona Halep are great Ambassadors for the WTA Tour & World Tennis In general, I hope that they have more Grand Slam finals against each other, Thank You.

This girl has 20 times the guts Lebron James has.
This bitch laid down and cried on the tennis court....yah really tough.
Tennis? LOL. Old mans game.
VeriTroll Worthy jr. And then got back up and finished the match, Lebron ran off to the locker room with a few minutes left.
Rayvyn007
actually he played the 3 quarter and went out with 7 mins left in 4th, came back in and had to go back out with 2 mins left. they dont stop the game of basketball for 1 player. tennis on the otherhand...how long was she laying on the ground? 10 mins? yah good comparison brah.
I know it was almost a decade ago, but it still made me tear up, when she'd won the match :') Amazing woman
Ten years later and it's still impressive! What a trooper...cramps in your calf are one thing, thigh cramps are a whole new level.
I've used ice packs and ended up punching the back of my thigh just to get it to release. And I don't even play tennis. lol
Wow, what guts. Much respect.
dont stop talking like doge the dog
I'll try this I run track
She is the definition of an athlete. Pushing through when you need to the most. Even on the hard days, that is when it counts.
Tougher than those babies that play football.
Andrew Woodhead those that play football have to sprint now move side to side ... sprinting will tear way more muscle and the more you move the worse the cramp gets
Yep
Compared to footballers, tennis players barely have to move.
Cause getting your body smashed into by another 180+ male is easy.
TraumaDog I think he was talking about the other football...
As a dancer, I experienced so many cramps and I applause this girl for still going because I have to take at least 5-10 minute breaks to stop crying and at least heal the pain a bit. At some point I wanted to give up but this girl is so strong for still going and I hope she’s doing well right now.
Other player ever heard of a drop shot? I know it's taking advantage of Wozniacki's injury but she wouldnt have been able to play that many points.
Exactly. Even though Wozniacki is the best runner in womens tennis, she can't get those drop shots by any chance.
Tougher than Lebron James
I don't recall LeBron crying on the court.
Yeah.... moving side to side is tougher than running up and down a long ass basketball court ... this bitch started dancing dramatically
Success Over failure LeBron was carried to the bench when he was cramping up.. Also had a much longer break then she did...
yes... the lebron that has played the most minutes and is luterally injury proof that lebron....
Uncle Tony you're right he just gave up 😂😂😂
Zvonareva should have hit drop shots. Or maybe that would be considered unsportsmanlike.
Marbles McGee Yeah lol, it would be really cruel, but effective
No, if wozniacki decided to keep playing even though she was in debilitating pain, it's not her opponent's obligation to play nice bc she's hurting. She decided she was well enough to play the full game, drop shots and all
She sounds like a Minecraft Ghast
No hate just couldn’t stop hearing it in the vid.

Her opponent seemed extremely sympathetic at the end there.
She was either very professional or a dick
What is she supposed to do though? I'd guess she's upset she lost to a player who was falling apart. Also, she didn't do nothing wrong (while not being sympathetic, as you said). Offering a handshake and saying ''good game / congrats '' it's the simplest thing you can do.
That is true fighting spirit..
What a nostalgia. I had sony Ericson as one of my firsts phones, I loved this phone, so many memories...

Mad respect, I’ve had serious cramps (calves) while playing sport and had to drag myself off the court for five minutes to allow the game to continue till I could walk again. This young lady gets up after 20 seconds and somehow keeps going.
Still makes me tear up to this day. Heroic stuff.
Great determination and it paid off :)

To withhold treatment in this circumstance is inhuman and dangerous !
lizzyw8 I beleive that is the point. By refusing treatment to the player they force them to forfeit the match to stop them from further injuring themselves.
Vera saw through her bullshit. That's why the handshake was so cold.

I know what she was feeling. These muscle cramps are true killers and there is NOTHING you can do except to become paralyzed and breath..., if you can still do that !!!
Massive courage to get through this.

Tennis rules can be harsh on players specially when medical attention is at stake.
I’m a bit confused on what’s happening
She's not injured, this is basically being very tired and needing a rest. If her opponent is fitter (or plays in a way that isn't as physically demanding) then there's no justification for having a rest just for that.
Respect to her for pushing through though, and this is the only time that screaming when hitting a shot is acceptable. Please make note Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka.
