  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is set to develop a Dornier 228 seaplane based on the Dornier 228 aircraft, as per reports. The Dorniers are currently manufactured under license from Swiss aerospace company RUAG for Indian defense forces and European markets. HAL’s transport aircraft division in Kanpur has already developed floats for the program. HAL first proposed the idea to convert the Dornier 228 into a seaplane at the Aero India 2021.

The Philippines might also be interested.there is such need of this kind of plane since the Philippines is a archipelago nation with many island provinces having no airstrip ang sea ports. Twin otter plane acquisition project was halted.

indigenously produced seaplane is a welcome development. it was long overdue. Do-228 may be the right choice and should be pursued vigorously til it meets a successful end.

Perhaps they could even develop a variant used for firefighting, which lands on the water and sucks some up into an interior storage compartment, for dropping on forest fires.

HAL can produce passenger aircraft in less cost and fuel efficient most companies prefer cost efficient rather than luxurious

HAL should focus on its core areas like military jets and helicopters rather than spreading itself thin on such low profit field where lots of better commercial options are already available.

that won't be allowed to be done
otherwise LCA would have been in service from 15 year ago itself

You can't be more wrong. HAL seldom manufacturers entitie planes by itself. There are far too many subcontractors to count with almost all being private players. The Transport Division is dedicated for manufacturing transport aircraft. HAL has other divisions for manufacturing fighters, helicopters etc.

@@formulafunn you're another who is hopelessly wrong. Until recently HAL was only the manufacturer of the LCA not the designer. New combat aircraft is designed by the DRDO's ADE lab and new engines are designed by the DRDO's GTRE lab. So the delay and partial failure of the LCA is purely the DRDO's problem. Get your facts right ffs!

I think India could benefit from attempting to create a modern electric RotoDyne. Then expanding into interconnected african country's airports until India is the primary air travel/shipping company.

I think it will be a great success, not just in India, but worldwide. It is a good aircraft and the float conversion will be a great benefit.

Dornier 228 is not a HAL product but is just a licensed product and after almost 40 years of its existence HAL is claiming a great leap ahead by just adding sea plane floats to it. Great job of these Babus to please the master by playing on his music orchestra of Atmanirbhar Bharat. And we wonder why China is surging ahead :P
