  • In this episode we visit Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada. Here attempt to stay in Upper Lehman Creek Campground, but most all the sites are just too small for our crew cab, long bed truck and 25ft travel trailer. We make the long climb up to Baker Creek Campground and overheat our transmission along the way. Oh yes, hindsight is always clear as we should have placed the transfer case in 4wd-Low for the long steep climb. 1st gear in 2wd-High was just too taxing on the torque converter and generated a lot of heat while lugging up the steep hill for over 3 miles. You can bet your tail that we used 4wd-Low on the way back down.
We had a great tour of Lehman Cave and then motored out of the park with no vehicle or trailer damage. A successful trip overall!
🏞️Great Basin National Park is in eastern Nevada near the Utah border. It's in the Great Basin Desert and contains most of the South Snake Mountains. In the north, the mountain-hugging Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive leads to towering Wheeler Peak. Nearby is one of several ancient bristlecone pine groves. The Lehman Caves have distinctive stalactites and other formations.
⛺We stayed in Baker Creek Campground.

It looked like a pretty cool spot. Almost the definition of wide, open spaces! Given the chance, would you return to Great Basin?

We definitely want to return to the park. There is so much that we didn't see with the main park road being closed during our visit.

How do you like your Ram? I am considering buying a used gas one but I am leery of Chrysler products...

We've had very good luck with our current Ram 3500 diesel and our previous Ram 1500 Hemi gas trucks. We have 206,000 miles on our current 2012 Ram 3500 and have done nothing but the routine maintenance. We follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, and it has not yet let us down. We won't hesitate to buy another Ram. That said....in the past we had a Chevy Silverado and had very good luck with it too.

Oooooo, three whole miles of washboard gravel! Better stay on the interstates.
