  • Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am further testing out the power couplers to see what they are really capable of! This time I want to see if they can make a slinky!

    About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
    Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

A slinky starts at 0 and only retracts back to 0. A conventional spring starts at 100 and only expands back to 100. A slinky has to start/be built at 0 and the stiffness needs to be set low. Best of luck SM. Love your videos. Just trying to help.

Would still love to see an ornithopter dogfight where the flapping wings are made using the power couplings, a combat version of your proof of concept. No propellers, jets, rockets, etc., purely flapping for flight, unless the low speed is just too impractical.

Maybe with low-no auto aim, but than again there would be quite a bit of bouncing from the flapping.

The other fun things that slinky's do is when you hold it up and send pulses down. Like the wave effect thing you were doing but vertical instead. Maybe try suspending it on a structure with a piston that can go up and down to create the wave/pulses? Or make something similar to the slinky dog toy? It looked like it had SO much potential to be a slinky. I was cheering it on LOL

Hey scrapman, I think I may have a way of reducing your collision issue with power coupling. so with the double power coupling slinky if you add a 1X2 block in between each segment and then take 4 1X4 flat connectors or shields and connect 1 to both ends and on the top and bottom sides of the 1X2 blocks this should in theory give more surface area for the slinky to rest on without sacrificing the functionality of the slinky because the power coupling have no collisions with other parts. I hope this helps fix your slinky and I hope to see a follow up video of the slinky if this concept fix's it. love your content!

Y'know, I think you can make the round/spiral one form properly by offsetting the delay on each section by like 0.1 second from the one before it (1.0 to 0.9 to 0.8 and so on).
The reason it went tangled is because it contracted from straight to round all at once along the entire length, introducing chance as to whether each section would allign in order, or out of order.
Every section curling together at a slight delay from the section before it should make it form a proper spiral structure.
Now, as to whether it'll "slinky" or just Spaz out like the square version, well, I havent got a clue.

If you use parallel power couplers you can change the direction of the forces (mostly) side by side x they move mostly in the y, if you have them on top of each other y, they will move more in x.
If you use the suggestion above but with a slight off set from the ends of each other you can spiral it for even better spring/slinky effect

Scrapman, I love the video but you did something wrong and I think you should revisit this, slinky’s aren’t low stiffness springs, in fact they are the opposite of springs, they naturally want to be compressed, not depressed like springs, you made something compressible that’s why it was a bit of a wet noodle, you should go fully round the square and then up one to make da real slinky!
