Buccaneer falls off Ark Royal, Fleet Air Arm Museum (Bomb lift experience)

- An old video clip taken from the ‘bomb lift’ experience at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, RNAS Yeovilton.
One of the more potent childhood memories of the museum was seeing this, since it was quite shocking but exciting to watch. I’m convinced this is one of the inspirations behind my interest in Search and Rescue.
I believe this was an S.1 buccaneer that was painted to look like one of the current S.2’s before being deliberately pushed off the stern of HMS Ark Royal and filmed for the BBC series ‘Sailor’. Perhaps also used as part of a training film.
I was on board the Ark doing Marine Engineer Officer steam training prior to my submarine courses and watched the Buccaneer being pushed off the stern. The a/c had been stripped of all valuable items and engines. It was meant to be part of a flight safety film. Not sure if there was a final version. The Ark was an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world. I still have a made to measure pair of shoes crafted by the on board Chinese cobbler. Also the Chinese Laundry used to starch our white Engineer Officer overalls until very politely asked not to do so! Watching us struggling to get into our starched ovies was a sight to behold!!

The Aircraft Carrier Experience is the best museum exhibit/display I've ever seen, huge in scale but beautifully thought out and detailed. One of the few AV displays I've ever seen in the wild that seamlessly meshes in with the 'real'.
Agreed. I liked the "helicopter ride" to the carrier!
I think its a pile of expensive xxxx.....and I did 22 years in the RN (FAA) still play now as a civi from time to time....just my opinion each to there own
Was done for a safety film. They used a retired S.1 dressed as an S.2 Buccaneer.
My father was a PPL, we flew into RNAS Yeovilton to see the museum, we had a little van with follow me signs on it leading us to the back entrance of the museum.
Read the description it was a drill🙄

I don't think it went that way. If it did you would have dead pilots before the chopper got started, let alone crewed, warmed up and airborne. They were already in the air.

In world war II aircraft that were too damaged to continue to fight were stripped of parts and then dumped overboard. I am not a Navy man so I don't know if it's tradition that continues, but aircraft going overboard is usually intended and sometimes accidental.
Not now. A damaged aircraft would be stored in the hangar and returned to port for repair. In WW2 they could do it as it was more important that the CV stayed on station, replacement aircraft were constantly being shipped forward to replace losses by escort carriers acting as transports.
What an absolute stroke of luck that they happened to have a camera there when both the chain broke and it rolled off the roundover...

A buccaneer was " dumped" as part of a deck safety film, this is most probably from that actual film

At that time everybody had a camera instead of a cell phone.
The last CATOBAR of the British navy. Retired before even have the chance to see action in the Falklands.
It wouldn’t of seen much action anyway due to the rough seas even the Argentine navy had issues launching aircraft due to the weather before they withdrew
@@proudyorkshireman7708 the Argentine couldn't launch his carrier-borne A4s because there was not enough wind, bizarrely enough.
That was a shame. Still, the Buccaneer did a first class job in the Gulf War with the RAF.
i wou ld love to see that museum I was an RAF aircraft fitter! I applied for an exchange posting to to the Ark but someone pulled rank on me :(((
Definitely worth a visit! I can’t count how many times I’ve been there, I just know I’ll always go back at least once more.

Did they recover the Buccaneer plane?
I don’t think they did, no.
It would be useless anyway after an ammersive bath in sea water. It would have been a write off, even if recovered.
No it was a retired Buccaneer S.1 (which were no longer suitable for carrier operations) which was painted up to look like an S.2. The S.1 were all being scrapped anyway, their weaker Gyron Junior engines were not powerful enough for safe operations. You can tell its an S.1 by the smaller engine intakes compared to the Rolls Royce Spey equipped S.2.
