A 21st century steam loco built with 21st century engineering, this is going to be just perfection and the purists can't object to perfection. It's a genuine steam loco that will find its place as a new one amongst the older ones, exciting times ahead for the steam enthusiasts.

It is with great sadness that I learned of David’s passing. I think I speak for everyone when I say that without his engineering knowledge and expertise tornado would not of been possible. His contribution to the design of 2007 will be his legacy for many decades to come . I hope that sometime in the future a locomotive could be named after him.

    Only a new boiler remains.
And what a massive construction and paperwork that will be.
You start with tested and aproved by a f.e. Loyds Register materials for the construction.
Drilled front plate and rearplate, boilerplate, flame and heatexchanger pipes, boilermounting brackets, firebox, radial stays and safety plugs, etc.etc.
To get a boiler certificate all steps have to the checked and certified.
I hope to see the front and rear drilled plates for the boiler soon on this channel.

An interesting idea. Of course, many different designs, with different configurations of valve gear etc were tried and tested right up until the end of steam. While there's always room for improvement, a modern day loco would most likely look much like the final designs being produced in the 50's and 60's.

For non electrified lines? Experience has been that oil fired steam performs as well as modern diesel electric locomotives. The recent class 68 diesels have been unsatisfactory due to noise and reliability issues and are being withdrawn; many diesel types have had short lives and cannot be overhauled more than three or four times. There are also difficulties in meeting noise and emission standards with large internal coambustion engines.
Exotic technologies such as batteries and hydrogen are an expensive dead end except perhaps in the lowest power ranges.
The economics of service industries like transport is heavily distorted by tax systems. Between 45% and 55% of labour costs are tax.
Some countries eg Sweden have electrified routes where traffic is so light that someone will eventually realise that the fixed equipment is not worth renewing when it wears out. Some electrified lines carry about a train a hour! Why were they ever electrified in the first place?

The group which built this likes to associate itself with the UK armed forces, so their first new-build loco was named 'Tornado' (After the R.A.F.'s multi-role combat aircraft of the same name) and I believe it also carries the R.A.F. crest and motto. 'Prince Of Wales' has been a name given to a succession of Royal Navy warships, and I think the name is at least partly a nod to the Royal Navy. It is true that King Charles, when he was still Prince Of Wales himself, took a great interest in 'Tornado' and they may well have decided to name their second loco in honour of someone they considered a good friend to them and their projects. And why not?
Personally I would have liked to have seen it continue the tradition of these being named after notable Scottish political figures, but as has been said, it's their loco and they can call it what they like.
I can't wait to see this running - someone asked whether we really need a P2 - absolutely we do, they look stunning, at least in their original form. I don't really see the point of making a 'rebuilt' P2 because all you'll have then is an A4 with 'too many wheels'.
