Potential Border Terrier dog owners need to be aware of some pros and cons associated with owning this dog breed.
The Border Terrier breed is an affectionate, fun-loving one. They are brave, adaptable, and good with people, especially with children. Generally easy-going, they have an independent nature and like to make their own decisions. The Border loves to chase rabbits and squirrels but will live in harmony with other household pets if socialized and introduced carefully. This dog is equally at home in town or country.
The Border Terrier would suit an active owner who loves the ‘big dog in a small body’ attitude of a terrier but who prefers a softer, less feisty - and more social - version.

We have a 7 year old female BT. She is the most intelligent, sweet and loving dog we’ve ever had. She is my best mate. We bought a male about 3 years ago. They get along great and play together all day. He lets her take the lead on things and she has always been almost like a mother to him. They do a good walk every day and the high prey drive is real. No better dogs out there.

My BT is 16 years old and still active, does zoomies and is alert. I got him when he was 8 weeks old and raising him was very easy. He is very obedient, and listens to both voice commands and hand signals - which has turned out to be a blessing because he sadly lost his hearing completely last year. I can't say all BTs behave the same way because it depends on the owner and early puppy training. My dog's sister - which was owned by other owners who BTW never owned a dog before, whereas I've had dogs throughout my entire life - had the complete opposite personality and nature to his. She was disobedient, unfocused, pulled on the leash and couldn't walk in a straight line on a path, barked at everything, and chased everything. The owners were amazed at how well-behaved my BT was. Just shows that training can make a huge difference. In my experience, the BT is super intelligent, obedient, sheds alot of hair, is a very active dog that loves to run a lot and in my opinion is not suitable for an apartment in an enclosed area unless you can regularly take it out for walks, to play, run in a large open space and socialize. A BT can be introduced to other dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, hens, and chicks without getting aggressive. I'd say a BT will only become aggressive simply because it was not socialized since it was a puppy with other animals and people, and wasn't raised to be confident, calm and obedient. If the owner is aggressive, fearful or weak and the dog can see and hear it in the owner's body language and voice, your dog's going to react in the same manner. A 'naughty' dog is the result of poor training/leadership/guidance by a useless owner.

My Border is a love, helped numerous children overcome fear of dogs. He is 14, and has always been very chill. Best companion

I lucked into this breed and fell in love! You will bath your dog more than video says because they are magnets for mud but stubbornly insist on sitting on your lap and sleeping in your bed.

I lost my little chihuahua a few weeks ago. She was old and sick and had to be put down. I have been so depressed without her. I see a border terrier on the list of adoptable pets at the humane society, and if she is still there tomorrow, (I have to work today,) I am going to go and meet her and maybe bring her home. I am quitting my job and will have lots of time for her. There is also a yorkie there, and I will look at her as well.

Have had mine for exactly 8 years today. He doesn't shed much, usually only when his coat gets longer and if wet. He is definitely stubborn but also smart which in a dog is a bit of a combination to deal with, the dumb ones are often easier. This means you can train him to do many things but if he's not interested he just ignores you. Highly food motivated so usually a piece of a biscuit and he pays attention again. Really good with kids, even babies and small children, okay with other dogs in doors but not so much on a leash. Overall a fun little dog with a big personality.

Also, I've never had to bathe my BT. They are self-cleaning. My pooch smells, feels and looks clean all the time. They hate and don't need a shampoo. It's just bad for their coat.

I have had two border terriers. They both had very different characters. They do need training and socialising when they are young. It will pay dividends in the long run. They have strong characters. Mine only barked when someone came to the door, but that might be down to training. My first one had separation anxiety and I wasn't able to leave him at all. I trained the second one to be left by feeding him treats whenever I went out. Started with 5 minutes when he was a puppy, then 10 minutes, then 15 and so on. He would get excited when he knew I was going out and was perfectly fine to be left for up to four hours. I would never leave a dog alone for more than that. The first border had a much thicker coat and needed constant grooming. The second had more of a sparse coat and barely shed at all. Just a weekly brush, which was very amusing because he disliked being groomed. Again, the first border was more of a lap dog, but my second was just like a cat... he was happy to lay beside you or at your feet, but wasn't a lap dog at all. They were both wonderful companions. Neither ever showed any aggression towards people, children or other dogs. They are very intelligent and playful little dogs.

Good video, but I have some minor quibbles. 1) BT's are NOT hypoallergenic. 2) Some borders shed. A lot. 3) They don't really bark that much. 4) Why have other breeds in the video when it is about Border terriers?

The image of a dog at 1:06 is not a staffy btw it's an english bull terrier. My BTs are heavy shedders. They very rarely bark, not bothered about chasing after squirrels, cats, etc. Great companions and running buddies. Very trainable and biddable. Like a lot of dogs they are fantastic within the care of the right people with knowledge of the breed.

It's not true that you can't introduce a cat to a mature BT. That worked fine for me.

Border Terriers do NOT ' love to bark' generally very quiet ( but they'll sure let you know if an intruder is around). Any other breed is a downgrade if you ask me

I disagree with the hypoallergenic comment. I had 2 Borders, girl was so easy to train but boy was very wilful, very hard to train, took a lot of work. Best dogs I ever had. Girl could walk for ever.. Con... They can be seriously ill, you wouldn't know if your not totally in tune. Will keep going on until they drop

Stripping knives actually break the hairs, an equigroomer or occiput stone is better for stripping dead wire coat, the coat will need stripping when the hair makes a valley along their back

I have 2 of these, mine are very aggressive to other dogs, most they don’t get on with, they get and need lots of regular exercise, are great at recall but I did it early 8 weeks old, they are easy to house train. They are brilliant, but you do need to ensure they have a pack leader, without it your going to be in trouble.
Also they would love to attack anything that moves, cats, mice, rats, rabbits, if it moves they instantly snap and go super aggressive if on the lead, if off the lead they do recall and can be less aggressive but I talk to them if anything is around to distract them from going loopy

@@philcollins5742 my youngest was jumped on by a very large husky when he was a few months old, he’s been the same ever since, he hates big dogs, especially black Labradors, the female then just joins in when he goes, he is just scared and uses aggressive behaviour to make sure dogs don’t come near him. Some dogs he is fine with but most he just dislikes, I’ve had westies before and they were great with other dogs, I think it’s just part of the border breed because I have never met a border that isn’t aggressive to other borders.
They are both fine with kids and people, they love the attention from them, they just don’t really like other dogs
