@@solidsnake9924 Just a figure of speech to express my gratitude and appreciation for him, his work, his overall contributions to society, and the powerful/positive impact he's had on my life personally. Certainly didn't mean God or some imaginary higher power if that's what you're implying but I guess I'd say he (and his work/contributions) is a gift to all of us mostly from himself as well as the people/places that influenced him and helped to develop/form such an incredible mind and amazing person.

When I was in undergrad I took a class called “the biology of hope and belief” that was all about how religions and faith systems have evolved over time. When my very Christian mother found out about it, she was upset and called it pseudoscience. I just told her to think of it as the study of how every other religion besides Christianity came to be- after which she thought the class was a great idea. The cognitive dissonance was mind numbing 🙃

Decades ago, as an atheist, I agreed to my sons, at a 'non-demoninational' school, attending comparative religion classes.
I later withdrew them - physically - from a forced act of church worship!!
And found that 'comparative religion' consisted of teaching what was right about Protestant Christianity and wrong about every other belief system.
The head teacher admitted he was an ordained pastor, and regarded his rank dishonesty as a holy responsibility to god.
Amazingly, he kept his job. The attitude of the local population was that no-one could possibly defy a pastor.
But he didn't escape my unrelenting attention until my kids left that school.

I know atheists aren't supposed to have heroes, but Dennett was my personal favourite of the Horsemen. RIP legend.

I think having heros is fine so long as you never lose focus on their humanity. It's natural to be inspired by the lives of others, just don't take them so seriously that you become a fanatic.

People come up with an idea and then build on it. Someone invented the automobile. Then people started improving on it. They added a windshield so insects weren't smacking them in the face as they drove. They added headlights to drive at night, windshield wipers to drive in the rain, a horn to warn pedestrians, etc. Every idea is like that. Get a good idea people immediately start improving on it. Religion is like that. Someone invented a god, then asked the question what is he like, what is the correct way to worship him. It works better with a priesthood. Then we must defend our religion against all the others.

The religion itself never changed, none of the commands changed, only how we viewed and interpreted some of them. It’s pretty prideful to think we humans can understand all of God’s logic so no wonder we got so much wrong in the early days, since today with more modern discoveries, the Bible starts making a hell of a lot MORE sense than it would’ve in the dark ages.

All religions are bad because they undermine the respect for evidence and rational thought. People who believe incorrect things will harm people for incorrect reasons.
Not a single religion can use evidence to prove its claims. Therefore they're all wrong, therefore they're all bad.

Maybe it didn't "evolve" but rather "devolved"... just like how christians can think of the church as gradually descending from it's peak with Christ to now have become a secularized bastardization of it's origin. Hinduism is Eternal with No Founders, it talks of something Which was always there, is, and always will be.
This argument presumes that 'the world'(his term), as it is, is 'correct' - the current world culture - and that the natural inclination to like sweets, is _therefore,_ 'no longer correct.'
Let's use some logic on that: If there is a conflict, for us, between A(sugar liking) and B(culture), there is no way to tell, implicitly, whether A is incorrect, B is incorrect, or they are both incorrect.
One can only infer that _at least one_ of the two is 'incorrect.'
One way to approach resolving this question is to ask: assuming we wish to resolve the conflict, would it be *easier* to 1) Change our genetic proclivity to like the taste of sugar, or 2) Change whatever aspects of our recent culture conflict therewith?
It seems intuitively obvious, to me, that option 2 is the easier(and safer) resolution to the conflict.
Therefore, that it is not the predisposition to like sugar - and by analogy the predisposition to religiosity - that is best regarded as 'no longer correct.'
Rather, it is the recent and malleable culture which stands in conflict therewith.
So simple, so clear, so common sensical, and yet so powerful!

Science evolved too, so what? Dennett wrote a book called “Consciousness Explained” which explained nothing about how consciousness arises. I think he was fundamentally wrong, but was a very intelligent, challenging voice.

I don't know what he's thinking about sweets being outdated. Last I checked, it was a necessity for all living creatures.
We like sweet because they are dense in calories, like natural honey. It benefits us because food was rare back in the times before civilization. Not the case anymore, so the brain doesn’t need to be rewarded for finding it.

However, I "like" sweets because sugar (in its natural form, aka fructose - like honey, as you mentioned) is fuel for the immune system, the brain, and every organ in the body. And, because of that fact, it will never be "outdated", particularly for the body's sake. Any body, human or other.
Religion evolving is its issue. The point of religion is to have a belief in a set of unchanging morals that are fundamental to providing the best existence for humanity like thou shall not kill. As they are given by God, they can’t change and perverting those ideals in an attempt to conform to society rather than society confirming to those values is ultimately going to be every religion’s obsolescence.
God may be unchanging if he exists but that doesn’t help us since we apparently can’t access gods mind directly, or at least everybody who has claimed to be able to do so so far has disagreed about what god really thinks. What theists actually do is just gesture towards some axiom or other to ground their beliefs, same as everybody else, they just attribute the axioms to their god.

Religion’s principles evolving is based on individualistic axioms but the foundation (assuming God spoke to Moses or Mohammed, what have you) is based on God therefore it is truth. Even if God wasn’t real, I think most people agree there are universal truths of “good and evil” and those are biologically programmed into us, whether you credit God or not for that.
