I totally understand not wanting to bust up the concrete, but if that was a brass check valve, if the nut comes off of the stem for the poppet, the poppet can block the flow. I have seen many brass check valves fail in this way, and this one could cause a problem down the road. But this was a clean repair considering what you were working with.

I realize that the customer is always “…right…” but damn why are people still using indexing valves for residential landscape irrigation in 2024!?!?!

Your not wrong, lol. I explain the benefits. If they still want the indexing valve. That's what I'm going to install.

I can think of pros and cons for electric and index. Index valves have fewer electrical components to go bad, and it is pretty much impossible for them to deadhead. Lightening strikes have very little effect on index valve systems. I have had an entire backyard system be destroyed on an electric valve system where the strike traveled about 60' down the wire, jumping back and forth from the wire to the main and lateral lines, basically gutting the pipes and wire. I still push people towards index valves for new installs and only use electric valves if they need a high degree of programming capability or if the system is more than 6 zones or elevation concerns.

@@timbryant9869 If your new installs are consistently the same zones (all lawn zones with rotors or something like that), then more power to you for counteracting the lightning. Lightning strikes aren’t common where I am, so I forget about them, but that’s an excellent point you make that the indexing valves have fewer wires involved. I was viewing it from a design standpoint where different plant material and different types of sprinklers/emitters are involved.

@benwalters2449 yeah, between lightening and the beach sand for soil, it is a totally different environment here. It is pretty much impossible to over water.
