Nice and refreshing to see the views and opinions of an everyday user and not one of these niche users that usually make all their views based on creating UA-cam vids.

A very excellent point. There are tons of negative feedback on the new iPads and the upcoming iPadOS that these so-called content creators “generate” through their jaded opinions about what they should and shouldn’t have. And their viewers absorb this negative feedback and spew out similar thoughts and opinions for no other reason than to vent. It’s very counter-productive and creates a culture of hypocrisy and contemptibility.
How refreshing it is to see this video! Keep up the good work.

@@housepianist or and bear with me here... one day you grow up enough to realize that just because all you do is browse the web and check emails (which can be done with an iPad) that this does NOT mean that this is "all the average user will ever need!". See, where you made the mistake was thinking your low level use of the device was "average" or "everyday"... nope, your usage was BELOW average, if you can do all that you need to do with only an iPad, you sir/madam are a drastically BELOW AVERAGE user lol. Most average users will very very quickly hit a wall with what is possible on iPad OS which is why so many people are so vocal about Apple integrating MacOS (or a MacOS mode of some sort) into the iPad.

OK, education time for you, little girl.
Do you know why Apple updates the iPad the way they do? Because MOST people who use iPad Pros are not professionals. They do not need super advanced processes to accomplish the work they do and they certainly don’t need it for casual use. Apple makes it clear that they make the changes need to “improve people’s lives” as Tim Cook likes to remind us, and the changes made to iOS/iPadOS (mostly) delivers on those claims.
Here’s another problem with your analogy: You are basing it off of the “needs” of professional content creators. MANY of them put out videos wishing for more MacOS-like features that would make their work flow better. And while I’m not against that (I’m for it in some ways), the issue is that most of them think that they’re the only “professionals” out there and impose that logic on their viewers. In other words, if they need a more professional grade OS and then tell their viewers that the iPad falls short for that, they will believe that, even though a majority of them don’t need it. But they buy into the “logic” of it, so now they feel the iPad won’t suit their needs, even though they’re overwhelmingly content consumers.
You think everyone who watches UA-cam reviews on Apple products and its software are professionals? There are many professionals like airline pilots, doctors, nurses, teachers, etc, who use iPads everyday that don’t require MacOS-like functionality. Being a professional is what you DO, not the hardware/software you use. And according to the Forbes and Statista sites, Apple sold around 10 million iPads/1Q24. So you do think there are around that many people who are complaining about a lack of ‘Pro’ features and software? Get real!
Wow, imagine that! 10 million UA-cam video content creators! 🙄 On the other hand, how many people do you think buy super expensive MacBook Pros with maxed-out M-powered Ultra processors just to check email?
Again, let more reiterate: I can understand the need for a more “professional” applications for SOME occupations but the reason that the iPad (for now) is not venturing in that direction is because they can easily buy MacBooks and iMacs for those more intensive tasks. And the way I see it, MacOS will most likely never come to the iPad Pros. Now, do I wish for some MacOS-like features on my personal M2 iPad Pro? Yep, sure do. But we are not the majority of users for those implementations.
Your statement “Most average users will very very quickly hit a wall with what is possible on iPad OS”. How do you define “average user”? Average users are those who check email, watch videos, type the occasional document, gamers, Netflix, etc. You know “average” things. And content creators wanting more “pro” features for their iPads are NOT representative of the average user. THAT’S why I harp on those who complain about how much they need these “professional” things when MOST people don’t need them because MOST people are not content creators!
Do you get it? MANY professionals use iPads professionally “as is”.
Oh, and by the way, I worked on one of our local school committees creating a IT budget for supplying our education system with iPads and MacBooks - ALL for professional use. My wife is also a librarian tech who utilizes these tools in the school where she works. I’m also a professional musician, pianist, and composer who uses my M2 iPad Pro for many music projects using the available software that’s available in the App Store. Again, I do wish I could have a little extra with some of the things I do but I’m not going to come here and whine and bitch and moan and turn into an Apple-hater because of that. It all suits me well. And I have an M1 MacBook Air if I REALLY need something specific to be done.
So don’t amuse yourself on who you think I am. If you have a solid bases for your thoughts about me and on the subject of professional applications within the confines of iPadOS, give me some statistical support. Otherwise, put your fantasy writing to good use elsewhere 🤷‍♂️🥱

@@Cute_Maxi Yeah, idk what average user passes as these days, but I promise you anyone that cares a tiny bit about efficiency when doing tasks would get a mac. Taking advantage of mac only apps that blow the ipad out of the water in usability. The device was never meant for power users(that these days would be average users), and it still isn't, nor does apple want it to be(completely on purpose). It's kind of cute to play with, until you need to get shit done, and then you go to your mac.

I really like the simplicity and honesty of the arguments you put forward about your user experience and in particular everything related to use cases. The iPad will always remain (and this is so much the better) a touchscreen tablet which can easily replace a computer as long as we accept its limitations while remaining attentive to all that it brings in terms of specific uses that traditional computers are unable to offer.

☺I'm using Mac's and iPhone's for 8 years. Last year i've bought iPad 9 - entry level to check and see. I don't use MacBook, only Mac Mini, so iPad is my laptop outside home. I've used iPad 9 for real, commercial work - probably 90% of my work could be done on iPad.
Year later i know that iPad is one of better Apple products. I've bought newest iPad Air 11" with M2 processor and i'm happy. My Mac Mini is needed to 2-3 specific, commercial things (just sometimes, when it's needed). Ability to connect iPad to external monitor is amazing. Sometimes i'm using iPad connected to external monitor - it's easy and funny as using Mac. More often and often I don't have need to turn on Mac.
Do i need MacBook (as laptop)? No, at this point iPad is all i need. It's a really great companion device to Mac as well.

I'm a developer and I use my Mac all the time because I have to write code. However, I have the iPad mini with me all the time as a second screen when working, as my preferred reader whenever I want to stay away from the keyboard or when I'm busy with my hands with chores I watch youtube videos and movies on it. It's so versatile for everything. It's also wonderful if I'm going out to church or having a casual meeting where I have to take notes, illustrate something with friends at school and more.

Couldn’t agree more! I recently upgraded to the new 2024 iPad Pro from my iPad (4th Gen)…what a difference! I have similar work tools as you (via Windows) and love the idea that I can now use stage manager. I previously had a MacBook Pro but found that I rarely used it, I spent more time on my iPad, so gave my son my MacBook. I don’t miss having a laptop, my iPad meets all my needs. Also want to add that it’s so refreshing to finally have a real and relatable take on this topic!

Fully agree! I have always thought of this since the release of the iPad 3. The only thing that would separate this are software engineers and those requiring a ridiculous amount of GPU. But iPads over the years have improved and can perform video/photo editing on a semi-professional level. For what it can do, iPads seem to be better than the Macbook Air.

Which I very much do not like! this is the one thing that my mac (or windows pc) does better, it lets files move easily. I'm considering an ipad with keyboard or a MacBook Air. I'm leaning towards iPad.
I'm wondering if you could respond to a few questions:
    1. Do you have 13" or 11" iPad?
    2. Why do you use Microsoft software instead of Apple (ie.Pages)?
    3. Are you work I g from home (do you home school) or from an office?

      1. It’s the 11 inch. I have a video on why I chose the 11 inch over the 13 inch, but it’s specific to my needs so you’d have to think of your own needs.
      2. These videos are mostly focused on how I use my iPad as part of my day job. The company I work for are in the MS ecosystem & windows OS, so it’s more efficient to tie in with that. If it was the apple OS it would likely be that way around.
      3. I work primarily from the office at work. I am fortunate to have a nice space so it works well. I do tend to work from home on a Friday afternoon as I like to do the school pick up on a Friday. I have a much more minimal space at home in the corner of our bedroom. Follow me on instagram if you like, as I would like to use that platform for more photos of my spaces @checktheboxandlearn and so on

Maybe go through your entire work flow and ask the same question, would it work on an iPad, if there’s a no anywhere, MacBook might be the way to go….hope that helps a little.

It had some good bits here and there though so not a total waste although I felt he could have covered everything in about a third of the pages had he been less verbose though. I didn't care for Feel Good Productivity at all. Was basically just a rewrite of the top 10 productivity books from the past decade with the authors personal favourites. Nothing new to add just felt like a cheap cash in by the author benefiting from the work of others.

I totally relate to the ‘Natural pace’ part. I want life to chill and with so many priorities in a someone’s life this is something we really have to intentionally manage. Agree on Ali’s book. Nothing new and to be honest it was pretty light in taking anything away from it. Cal’s book in comparison are at a completely different level. Ali’s book will help with younger generations I think. I’m approaching my 40s and well into my career so didn’t get a lot from it. Do you have any book recommendations? I came across one recently which I never see advertised and it was brilliant. I’ll find the link and come back.

@@Jillatcheckthebox Tiny Habits, Thinking Fast and Slow, and Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before are probably my top three books. Atomic Habits also has a lot of good, practical methods such as habit stacking and introducing friction to avoid bad habits. I suspect you may have read them all already though? 😁 And of course Cal’s other books Deep Work and So Good They Can’t Ignore You. Not productivity related but The Psychology of Money is something I think everyone should read.
I turned 40 earlier this year so I likely can relate to your mindset. I moved from the UK to France 6 years ago looking for a slower way of life. I worked as an IT consultant and software developer so went the freelance consultancy route which has worked out fantastically for me. I work 4-6 months a year depending on how much I want to earn. Only taking on projects I am highly interested in.
I am a big proponent of Cal’s Deep Work methods which is probably why I was a bit disappointed with Slow Productivity. It felt more like a bunch of mini-biographies of a few famous people that were top of their fields. Not what I would really say fall into the normal type of knowledge worker. There was very little, if any, advice for the normal knowledge worker that can’t pick and choose their projects but is instead given work to do by their manager/employer. He also contradicts himself countless times and ends with shallow advice like “buy an expensive notebook so you take care of it and only write what’s important in it”.
The only actually ‘normal’ person mentioned in the book is a friend of his who cut her workload by 50% and accepted earning less money for more free time. Yet this same person had the luxury of being able to spend over $2000 a month(!) on subscription software to reduce her workload which clearly indicates she is already a high earner and has the financial freedom to do pretty much whatever she wants anyway.
I felt like the actual tangible information (ignoring the pages of biographies) could have been summed up in a couple of short blog posts without all the fluff. Considering it is only 200ish pages it felt like a real slog to finish. Read more like Cal had a contractural obligation to write another book but didn’t really have anything of value to say so just churned that out. Bit of a shame.
I will check out the other book you mentioned, thanks!

Then i got the MacBook Air and well….it fell antiquated. Something about it just felt like an old legacy system old people use lol no touch screen. The interface was the same boring thing. Couldn’t just use it as a tablet and have those apps and i just love iOS. Switched back to iPad Pro and I’ve been happy ever since. I know ipad isn’t for everybody, but for me? I was iPad only in 2020 for almost a year. I had sold my gaming PC and didn’t have a laptop. It was my favorite setup because it was so portable. I was able to write a draft for book just using a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard and Ulysses.
I later purchased an Apple M1 Laptop for both music production, live performance, along with it making it easier to do work for my remote job. That said, I still wish I could be iPad only, for all the reasons you mentioned.
One tip before I go, purchase a pop filter, or find a foam cover for your mic. In the intro to your video, there are lots of popping sounds, made even more painful using headphones to list. Get a filter so that you don’t get loud popping sounds from your mouth being too close to the mic.

If it ran MacOS I could do that, but way too much of the software I run on a daily basis is not available on the app store and therefore cannot even be installed on an iPad... and there is no iPad OS "alternatives" to running VMware Fusion with a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine so I can run a specific application that only runs in the Windows command prompt environment but on my Mac... or the proprietary software I use to make configuration changes to my drones, or Blender, or insert one of the 3 million other things that an iPad just cannot run... I think if you work a non-technical job or just browse the web and check emails then sure, an iPad is great, but most people just aren't that privileged... There is absolutely nothing "professional" about an iPad Pro (unless you are professional 2d artist and thats all you do... and even that is debatable). Apple needs to add a full suite of touch features to MacOS (including a switchable touch centered UI based on the iPadOS UI) and then put MacOS onto all iPad Pro devices.

I've seen a lot of folks say it isn't worth an upgrade, as they don't feel they can do any more with the new one vs the older ipads. Yet this same mentality isn't applied towards smartphones which release annually, or new computer parts. Lots of people kept comparing these to the M2 ipad pros, in which case I'd say no it isn't worth upgrading. Most people aren't upgrading their ipads or MacBooks every generation. I'd agree iPadOS needs improvements, but if you just want macOS, get a Mac. Unless apple did a lot of UX/UI changes to macos for the iPad, I don't think it would be a good experience anyways. That's how I felt about Surface products. Kinda sucked as a tablet due to Windows.
