I can't recommend Tuska enough: - A mall right next to the venue for cheaper food that also plays metal on the intercom during the festival - Lovely people, some of the best pit etiquette I've seen - A good mix of lineups - Every major hotel is within a half hour distance of the festival with public transit Edit: there's also gravel and concrete, so no mud!
Also something extremely important, Tuska takes place on concrete. I dont mind the rain but mud is in my eyes absolute aids some people love it, i despise it. Thats one of the reasons why I dont ever wanna go to Wacken.
not a multi day festival, but as a 105 pound 14 year old kid, sick new world was awesome. watched kublai khan, paleface, loathe, trash talk, baby metal, alice in chains, danny elfman, slipknot, and soad. i’d say about 70% of the time i was right on the edge of a mosh pit where proof would slam into me every few seconds, but everyone was super nice and i didn’t get hurt and i had a great time, especially for my first metal festival
My first multi-day metal festival was Summer Breeze (Dinkelsbühl, Germany) last year and I really enjoyed it and I think it definitely works well as a "beginner" big festival because it got like 4 stages, 3 of them being on the actual festival ground and one in the caming area, which makes it quite easy to navigate but also gives it enough variety, would recommend :)
good to know! Summer Breeze 2025 will be my first large festival. I'm traveling solo from Honolulu to Frankfurt. The week before I'm doing ConQuest of Mythodea (larp/nerd fest) in Brokeloh.
See people mentioning Copenhell in Denmark, but I would also also add Jailbreak to that, a smaller Festival on the other side of Denmark which is being hosted in former prison, it's usually quite well organized with smaller crowd and only lasting 2 days, but also very positive and welcoming which I think is great for beginners
My first metal festival was 2018 Rock on the Range (before it was changed to Sonic Temple). The thing I remembered the most was the total feeling of lawlessness and people just absolutely loosing themselves in the partying and the music. People were absolutely packed on top of each other. For a 16 year old kid, I had never seen anything like it. The people themselves are enough to get me back to the festivals. An incredible time.
I was aware of it the first few years, had wanted to eventually go, ended up going on with life and got sidetracked with Summer Slaughter Tour, remembered about MDF and searched it up because of this video, and was shocked that not only are they still going, they've expanded to a global scale. Had a friend that lived out that way that I had planned on going with, though I doubt I'll ever talk to him again.
Just came back to say that I looked at Summer Slaughter Tour's line-up for this year, and holy shit did the quality of the line-up drop right the fuck off since the last one...
Thanks for the shoutout to ProgPower USA. However, there is really only one stage so attendees don’t have to pick between bands. Some special shows use the upstairs venue during the day before the main event starts in the afternoon. But when I saw the topic of this video, ProgPower was my first thought. It is a remarkably comfortable event.
Last year I took my daughter to her first festival, Summer Breeze in Germany. She had a blast, complained that I didn't go with her sooner, and wants to go this year again.
ProgPower in Atlanta is great! VERY friendly crowd and venue and always an awesome lineup. I've been 3 times, and can say it's absolutely perfect for the beginner!
My first was woodbunge. A tiny two day metal festival 30 min away from my home. I did not stay the night. There were maybe 40 people there. Excluding the bands and the workers. It was really nice and it's a nice way to meet local bands. I bought my first record there
Tuska was the first metal festival I went to with my girlfriend (who btw didn't listened metal at all when we first met) and we absolutely love it! I highly recommend 😎
I've been to several Mass Destruction fest, Maryland Doomfest, Decibel fest , Carolina Chainsaw fest. Just went to our first Hells Heroes and it was amazing. Headed to Blades of Steel later this year in Wisconsin. Taking our first trip to Europe this year for Keep it True Rising, cant wait for that🤘
Tons of Rock in Oslo is also a beginner-friendly festival. Like Inferno it is in Oslo, but up on the Ekeberg field, a huge field that overlooks the city, but is a short bus-ride away from hotels and comforts. Or you can book a camping spot at the camping that is there all year round. Or you can do like me and just walk up the hill, since I live by it''s base.
Another fest on the power metal side of things that's good for beginners is mad with power in madison, WI. One stage, in doors, middle of major city and they give you a food/game break. Also surprised you didn't bring up any of the fests in vegas. If it ever come back, psycho, sick new world, when we were young( ok, wwwy not exactly metal but i'd consider it adjacent.) You can do those as cheap or extra as you want. I think this year is it's last year? Another fest on the metalcore/hardcore side of things furnace fest in Birmingham AL is a good one for beginners as well. Major city, easy to get to and not rediculous expensive.
Would definitely recommend New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. 2 days, Mix of established bands, up and coming bands, and underground bands. The lineup is usually more metalcore, deathcore and hardcore, but it has had Megadeth, Shadows Fall, and Anthrax in the past. It's in the city with plenty of hotels nearby and the food and drinks are Moderately priced. Definitely worth checking out.
I have been to tolmin 10 times, last year we went to Velenje. But we are so excited to go back to tolmin. I can't wait for summer. Staying for to the full 7 days tho 😁
I also recommend Rockstadt Extreme Fest in Transylvania, Romania. It was my first ever festival and I also went solo, it was great and not too crowded. It's getting bigger and better each year with an amazing lineup this year!!! The guy who's behind it all already mentioned how next year it's going to be even better since he already has a couple of headliners confirmed. It's also pretty cheap compared to other European festivals. The festival position is also amazing in my opinion, it is in Rasnov which is a small city near Brasov in Transylvania it's truly great. And it's just a couple of train stops away from Dracula's castle! A few of the bands headlining this year are Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies, DEP, Saxon, Hatebreed, Exodus and many others.
If y'all wanna explore some Romanian fests I recommend ARTmania, very user friendly, and very close to REF. Celtic Transylvania is also nice but a bit difficult to get to. Once there it's very comfy though. Cheers to the Aussie people, had fun with you guys :))
I am attending my first major multi day festival this year at Copenhell. I practically live right next to it and have wanted to attend for a couple of years, but haven’t been able to go all 4 days due to school. This year I promised myself that I was going all 4 days no matter what bands are playing and how many exams I have. I didn’t listen to any of the bands on the lineup when they got announced, but now I have several bands on the lineup I would consider myself a fan of and I can’t wait to see all of them. Thank you for making this video Wyatt and hope you get a chance to come to Copenhell with dark insanity in one of the upcoming years🤘🏼
To add a few festivals for fans of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal I'd recommend Maryland Doom Fest in Frederick, Desertfest (which has, I believe, four locations, NYC, Antwerp, London and Berlin) and for somehing that's a little more Multi-Genre (as in it's also a pretty good Punk and Country/Rockabilly Fest that just happens to have some great bands on it.) Muddy Roots down in Tennessee.
Living in Europe belgium where there are 2 metal festival's alcatraz and graspop, thanks for showing me amazing american festival's!!! I might just come across the ocean to see it !!! yes i live in the whahala of metal europe but these festival's seem fun !!! I might go to them.
been to a couple non metal festivals but I'm taking the plunge this October and decided to get tickets to aftershock, my favourite bands are all playing and it's pretty close to Canada. Biggest festival I've been to had 20,000 people, so 160,000 is a pretty big step up
Stumpfest in Portland, OR is another to consider. It’s been solid for over a decade now. It’s nice and small, only one stage in a small club, and 3 full days of consistently excellent lineups. It’s in a great part of the city with plenty of good food and bars. Check it out next year.
I hope you make it out here to Houston for Hells Heroes eventually! It was 3 days this year, but actually, in a way, it was 4 day's because they have a pre-party show the day before the festival at the venue and also free after-party shows at the venue and local metal clubs. It's a fun weekend. I go every year
I guess I'm sort of a festival veteran after 6x Wacken, 4x Manitoba Metalfest and 1x Metal Magic and this year I went to Hell's Heroes. It was fucking excellent. 3 days of killer bands, great venue, decent food choices, and awesome people. I will definitely be going back. Heading to Metal Magic in Denmark for the 2nd time and it's a great, intimate festival. Like a big metal garden party!
You got it! Last year was my first year going by myself and I had a blast! I recommend studying the map and know that there’s zero service there. The water lines were always short, I hope you have an awesome time!
@@punkybruster1084 hell yeah going with a buddy of mine and definitely didn't expect cell service and I'm glad to hear the water lines are short and it's plentiful and free unlike some horror stories of water at festivals . xD I bought collapsible water bottles to bring in plus I'm bringing my own food I'm camping as well plus my own case of water and energy drinks got a couple portable fans and phone battery chargers plus I'm going old school with a pint and shoot digital camera potatoes pics all day! My wife and I are taking my 2 youngest siblings (14 and 16) to all of our first fests this year in Rocklahoma. Would have loved to go to something like Milwaukee but this one's only an hour away

Just a heads up to you all LGBTQ+ metalheads coming or already in Tuska this weekend, Helsinki Pride is on Saturday 29th so pay a visit there if interested, unless your favorite band is playing then that is. Tuska is always at the same time as Helsinki Pride so it's always worth it checking out both if attending
3 factors actually: 1. proximity to you 2. what bands you want to see 3. how much money you have.
4) and how well you deal with long distance travel.
Rockville in Daytona is the first and only Metal Festival I've been to. It's amazing and I make it a yearly journey now
I can't recommend Tuska enough:
- A mall right next to the venue for cheaper food that also plays metal on the intercom during the festival

Dong Festival in Germany is the best imo :)

man it sucks that I've never been able to go to a single metal show in my 15 years of being a metalhead
Tuska was good back then!

Best beginner metal fest? YonderWays Metal Fest in Yatesville georgia
Nummirock in finland is better than tuska:;)
Here's a random epiphany I had a few months ago: Metallica is the only one of the big four who hasn't played at Wacken.
