    Jim it is awesome to see you on CPF. Tritium vials are hard to find nowadays wish I could find some. Other than that these lights are titanium its soft metal that will ding and scratch very easily. Sure the detail of the machine work is first rate but there are now a good amount of factory lights that match that now. Today in 2016 it kind of doesnt matter anymore who came first the modders or the makers when it comes to innovation. The manufacturers have made stratospheric strides in design, quality and performance for the most part. Jim here is a challenge for you. Find a custom maker that will make you a titanium knock off of the Zebralight SC600 MkIII HI. The MkIII is pretty small, has something like 15 modes, is programmable, fully potted, thermally regulated, amazing ergos, an XHP35 HI emitter that comes even close to matching the 99 dollar ZL. Sure Id love to have the cash for say a Spy but I dont and where I am I need a lot more than little thumb size lights with low output. That bigger light was on the big side for you? You must where some tight pants man. The Olight R40 is an easy light carry for me. I am a big guy and wear big pants with big deep pockets its no problem. Your adventure into flashaholism is very interesting. I am actually hoping it pushes the custom makers to get off their butts and finally innovate again instead of cranking out the same lights they have been making for the past decade. Exotic in my case would be for instance a cerakoted Nitecore MH20...

    no clip, means no go, for me... without a clip I wouldn't carry it and if I didn't carry it I couldn't justify the price. I guess I will just have to be satisfied with custom knives and my Olight S1 that does have bead blasted titanium and copper bezels that add a little more flavor than your average EDC flashlight I guess. I still enjoyed the video though. keep cranking them out please!

    Jim, the damascus looks to have been deep etched and then repolished leaving the relief but of course not the contrast.

      That's exactly what I thought!

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  8 років тому

      It's possible, but if it were etched better, the lower portions (that a polishing wheel couldn't hit) would be much darker. The highs being bright, I could see from polishing, like Damasteel, but like damasteel I've seen some etched poorly with little contrast, and proper etching which is black/silver. Like how Brian Tighe etches.

  • @xXxCatsnakexXx
    @xXxCatsnakexXx 8 років тому +1

    I doubt that it is shit damascus... -it's not worth the hassle of completing machining operations, only to find an unfixable void or inclusion. Some people like a low contrast etch and stainless can be harder to etch in general. My guess is it's deliberate...

    Now onto actual EDC lights from Vinhnguyen54

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  8 років тому

      Great work, no argument. But what is "actual EDC"?? I "actually" EDC these lights. Carry them daily. That's the definition of EDC.

    • @AndrewJaggi
      @AndrewJaggi 8 років тому

      I should have clarified. The comparison of high end production knives to custom knives I believe is apt. Of course you can carry these but wouldn't it be nice to use a light that costs significantly less and performs infinitely better? What is also cool is that you can essentially customize any light from Vinhnguyen54 with your own preferential LED, engraving, and heat treat. It's going to take someone who is actually interested in learning about flashlight technology to understand the differences in leds, drivers, and batteries, heat conductivity of certain materials ... but man was it fun adding that knowledge to my EDC repertoire. I mean I get the appeal of custom anything, and I have even bought tritium just to stick on many lights, but LUX/Lumen/Beam matters just as much as say the Grind/Steel/Handle material of any particular knife.

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  8 років тому +1

      It's a half life of 12.5 years. I don't really envision using any of these longer than that anyway, I'll have traded them for a new design by then I'm certain. So at around 12 years, they are about half brightness, and still serve as locators for another decade. I'll be in my 60s then and won't give a shit LOL

  • @PineyJustice

    Tritium aside, quality looks about the same as my solarforce limited edition stainless steel, and I guarantee the custom p60 dropin I made for it was kicking out way more photons.
    Just buy a solarforce with a nice nailbender dropin, it'll be brighter and your wallet will thank you for it.

    • @brianjc720
      @brianjc720 8 років тому +2

      +Jim Skelton "as long as you can find a reason to buy it". Why not just say that you want to spend money on cool new toys. No matter how much you try to reason your purchases, all you are doing is buying new toys and admiring them while arguing that it does not matter whether or not they are practical (in their relationship to their price). While I do enjoy your videos to a certain extent I do not see how you can justify $80 on a flashlight like that. Even if the raw materials might cost more than $80 that does not justify such a purchase. I could plate my feces in gold worth $500 and it still would not be worth any more than that (no investment value).

    • @brianjc720
      @brianjc720 8 років тому

      +Jim Skelton Collectors are really in the crudest sense geeks about whatever they collect. Nothing wrong about that, just that the things they collect only have value to their geek mindset. Again in the crudest sense.

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  8 років тому +1

      Your argument is completely invalid. If you gold plate your shit, it is shit. It is worthless and doesn't do anything. A light made of titanium is a light, it has value as do the materials.. and it does something, it performs a function.
      I was pretty damn clear in the video that in many cases (but not all), a production light for $125 will perform as well as these do, and we are paying extra for the customization (choosing our own emitters/drivers/tritium accents/etc) and for the aesthetic beauty we find in them. You're only reinforcing *what I already said*... you're not creating an argument, you only sound like you are.

      I haven't found one yet that's "crap at being a light". As my tastes settle in and my preferences evolve, I'm sure I will buy, sell and trade many times over... that's what we do as collectors of anything. But I don't look at any of these and feel a need to let any go because of their performance.

    This one dude sells replica lightsabers for $15,000. Graflex Saber. Even a master replica for $1000+ is too deep for my pockets. Every time they go on ebay they sell. Someone buys them. A millionaire sitting at home fondling his $15,000 replica hilt. Same with these here lights. I like the Muyshondt Aeon. Thats about all I will ever need from light. Niche and well made. All the tritium vials are cool and shit. But they dont give me a itch to scratch. Mcgizmo's lights never gave me a itch either. When you catch the bug you must answer.
