I have burning pain in my hip and tingling numbness in my feet. I went to urgent care and they determined I have acute Radiculopathy/Sciatica. I saw an Orthopedic PA and he has scheduled me for an MRI tomorrow. My question is should I be doing PT before we get review results of the MRI? I also can't seem to sit down without a lot of discomfort in the groin area.
Sir: Thank you for your query. Unfortunately it is not possible to give an opinion about your particular condition without a careful in-person examination. I would suggest that you seek care with a spine-surgeon as soon as possible to have this matter evaluated. Wishing you good luck.
I had l5 si surgery in January this year here in Florida I have severe pain every day it's been 7 months since my surgery my right leg hurts every day and my calf muscle keeps locking up on me my Gp said that I have a pinched nerve at l4 right side now l5 and s1 the surgeon did rods and screws can that be pushing up the l4 to hit the nerve
Thank you for reaching out. Since I don't know the specific facts of your case, unfortunately I am unable to give you a medical diagnosis/ opinion. However as a general rule, if surgery has not given you the result that you were hoping for, I think getting a second opinion from another surgeon would be a reasonable option to consider. Sometimes having another surgeon look at the situation can be quite valuable. Best of luck, and wish you the best 👍
great info!. EMG shows bilateral radiculopathy. Lumbar MRI does not show nerve impingement so can the nerve be compressed in pelvis or Piriformis? So far ESI (s1 and L5 not making much difference). foot numbness came upon me same time I lifting something or over exercised (bike and leg lifts). That was 2yr ago. I saw online that radiculopathy can cause neuropathy but is that true? More than one surgeon said nothing to operate on in spine. Ruled out hip. Was seeing a pt and she made it worse with new nerve symtoms. The nerve stuff causes concern.
Thank you for your question. Obviously I cannot diagnose your condition, but the problem you described is quite tricky, I agree. Sometimes an EMG/NCS can determine if the nerve is irritated in the spine or at the level of the piriformis muscle. If you would like a consultation you are welcome to contact my office (Ph: 414-276-6000).
Hi doctor , i am 33 and i have l5 s1 disc herination annular tear radiculapthy since 8 years at right leg and foot, i got control over it in 1st year. And now again symptoms are getting severe, even though I’m doing exercises and stretches. neurosurgeon wants me to do l5 s1 fusion, and physiotherapist say you don’t need surgery. Could you please give me your opinion?
For young people I always recommend that they exhaust nonsurgical treatment first. Usually a combination of physical therapy and pain-management procedures (like an epidural steroid injection) is quite helpful. This will be a reasonable next step for most patients. Unfortunately since I don't know the particulars of your case, you should explore these avenues before proceeding with surgery. Wishing you the best of luck 👍
Thank you for reaching out. As a first step, it may be helpful to try a course of physiotherapy. Later on, you may need to see a spine-specialist for further recommendations about your condition. Unfortunately, without a physical-examination and a careful review of the imaging studies (like an MRI) I am unable to make suggestions about a course of treatment. However, in general, I recommend that patients start slowly and gradually with conservative care (step-by-step) before undertaking surgical treatment. Wishing you all the best. -MK
Why do i have radiating pain in both legs? I have 3 disc bulges: L3-4, L4-5, L5-L6. I have compressed L4 nerve root. I also have compressed S1 nerve root. I'm confused.
25, Male From what you described it seems that I have S1 Sciatica. I’ve already been told I have sciatica. I’ve had this going on four + years. On top of that I have minimal pain / restlessness on the interior of my thigh up by my growing area. Is there a doctor you could recommend in Texas. I’ve been to a neurologist and all they did was prescribe gabapentin and sent me to pain management and that doctor said “we’ll do a steroid shot into your spine” that helped for like four days before my leg swelled again. They said my MRI protrusion is not big enough to cause that much pain. I’ve recently got a new PCP that was able to help me control my symptoms with other medications. My leg swells to the point I can’t roll in bed and when I’m able to get up I can’t put weight on my foot especially at the heel. All my pain is down my right side. The medicine that helps me slowly is becoming less effective. Even with the swelling under control I can’t sleep at all. When the pain subsides it’s just restless from the top of my buttock down to my heel (my right side). I start therapy soon. Looking for recommendation.
Thank you for reaching out. It sounds like your condition may need further investigation by a spine-surgeon. Dr. Antonio Webb (spine-surgeon in San Antonio, TX) has an excellent UA-cam channel. You may want to contact his office to set up a consultation. Wishing you good luck! 👍
Excellent video. I've had chronic L4- S1 Radiculopathy for 8 years and it's getting worse. Hoping I will be free from this pain soon
Great to hear that you enjoyed the video. Wish you all be best!

Sir disc prolapse can cause both leg pain numbness tongling??
Yes it may. You can check out my video about this subject here:

Sometimes more than just one nerve can be causing pain. For that reason, it is not unusual for patients to have pain in both legs.
